CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF DEACON CHARLIE WILLIE GRIFFIN, SR. 1919-2005 Saturday August 27, 2005 12:00 Noon GOOD SHEPHERD BAPTIST CHURCH 1714 OLIVE ROAD AUGUSTA, GA. 30901 Rev. Dr. Robert W. Turner, Pastor - Officiating < "See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way, and to bring you to the place I have prepared." Exodus 23:20 NIV

OBITUARY "To everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under the heaven." Ecclesiastes 3:1 During his lifetime, Charlie W. Griffin positively touched many lives in this community, both the young and the old. Born January 25, 1919 in South Richmond County(McBean) to the late Mills and Mattie Griffin, he shared his life with five sisters and four brothers. Charlie was preceded in death by his wife of twenty-five years, Gladys Curry Griffin.. To this union, eight children were born. After her death, he alone raised his five youngest children. He saw them finish college, pursue careers and marry He retired in 1974 from Fort Gordon Military Facility after thirty-four years of service, where he received many meritorious awards. In 1981, he was united in marriage to Gladys English Griffin. They shared a loving relationship until her death in 1995. As a youth, he confessed his life in Jesus Christ and united with McElmurray Spring Branch Baptist Church in Burke County, Ga. After moving to Augusta, Ga., he united with the Good Samaritan Baptist Church where he served as Superintendent of the Sunday School, Adult Sunday School Teacher, member of the Scholarship Committee, member of the Senior Mission and Faithful Workers Club. He, along with the late Deacon Ralph Walford, was the overseers of the new GSBC Sanctuary building project. Deacon Griffin served as Chairman of the Deacon Board for many, many years, and was Chairman Emeritus until his death. He trained numerous deacons, and was a mentor for other young men at church and the community. The Youth Usher Board of Good Samaritan was named in his honor. On July 11, 2005, the Fellowship Hall of the church was renamed the Boston-Griffin Commons. His favorite books of the Bible were Acts and First Timothy. His favorite saying was, "obedience is better than a sacrifice". He was a lover of poetry and was considered the poet laureate of Good Samaritan and throughout the church community. Charlie was one of the founders of the Bethlehem Community Association whose mission was to restore the Bethlehem Community. Through the years he would often meet with Mayors, members of the city council, and commissioners to communicate the needs and concerns of his community. He was actively involved in the PTA when his children were attending school. Charlie was an advocate of education and the pursuit of excellence. "To God be the glory for all the GOOD things he has done". Deacon Griffin brought an easy joy to each day with his special ways. He gave so much, not only to his family, but also to his church and the broader

community. Because of this, and God"s grace he lived a happy and prosperous life. On Tuesday August 23, 2005, our hearts were saddened, when our father was taken away, but we are comforted in knowing he has gone to be with the Lord. We thank God for sharing the life of our dear father with us, and for the cherished memories that will remain with us forever. Those standing on these shores to see him are three daughters, Evelyn (Alvin) Melton, Augusta, Ga., Carolyn (William) Boone of Riverdale, Ga., Patricia (Robert) Caine of College Park, Ga, five sons, Charlie (Jessie) Griffin, Jr. Augusta, Ga., Alfred (Nancy) Griffin, Augusta, Ga., Dennis Griffin of Wapakoneta, Ohio, Carl (Yvonne) Griffin of Rochester Mn., and Darryl (Lorine) Griffin, Evans, Ga. Don t Don t spend too much time in mourning, tears are for the sad. I left to be with Jesus and that should make you glad. Don t waste your hours in grieving, no need to feel distress, I m tired of life s frustrations and had to have some rest. Don t vex yourself with questions or try to reason why. Life here for me was ended it came my time to die. Don t lose the love I gave you, feed it with your care. Grow it with devotion and spread it everywhere... ->, x,,;, Don t fret because my leaving came in such a way, we ll have another meeting in God s Eternal Day y ORDER OF SERVICE Rev. Ervin A. WHO WAS MY FATHER My father was the one person who I remember as a child that showed love, guidance and compassion for his family. He sacrificed financially and socially for the good of his children. My father was the person who instilled a long lasting message that anything can be achieved through hard work and staying focused. My father was the person, who I remember as a child growing up, would call you inside during the middle of a baseball game just to tell you about the facts of life and the importance of an education. He gave all and did all to assure that we got an education. My father was the person, who after our mother died (I was only eleven), cooked breakfast each morning before going to work. He wanted to be sure that we had a balanced meal before going to school. He also cooked dinner upon arriving home after a long day at work (after Evelyn and family moved to Ft. Knox)., '. : ' My father was the person who I remember, would play baseball with us grow ing up, and take us on the Church picnic and, of course, that trip to Broad Street on Saturdays. By being the youngest, I got to go to downtown a little more often. We would always have lunch at the H.L. Green's lunch counter. My father was that person, who wanted his children to have a Christian cen tered life. Going to and participating in the Baptist experience were required. He devoted his life to his church and family. My father was the person who had deep love for his grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. My father was that person who loved family gatherings in the back yard on Maple Street. -,-..,., My father was that person who took on any ailment without complaint. I remember him telling me one day, "It could always be worst." I drew strength from that alone. My father put his life on hold for fourteen years until the last of his children left home. I would guess, but he never said, he did not want any distractions from his children. He married Gladys English in 1981. This began another phase of his life. We all are very appreciative of him for the love he gave us and the sacrifices he made for us. Evelyn, Carolyn, Charlie Jr., Patricia, Alfred, Dennis, and Victor would paint a picture of their father the same way, only with a different twist. So, if I wanted to add color to this picture, I would use Blue for his calmness, Orange is for his warm heart, Green for his financial sacrifice, and Yellow for his radiant smile. Red is for his strong discipline. Oh, by the way, those are the colors of the RAINBOW.....AND THAT POT OF GOLD IS WAITING FOR YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE. MAY YOU REST IN PEACE. Darryl R. Griffin.
