THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST Dear Friends in Christ, Happy Feast of Corpus Christi! I write for the first time to say that I am VERY EXCITED to be here in Quincy as your pastor, serving your parishes (or should I say our parishes ) of St. John the Baptist and St. Joseph. This is my first time in the role of a pastor, having served as a Parochial Vicar at St. Mary s in Dedham for four-and-a -half wonderful years, followed by nine great years of serving parish leaders of youth, young adult and family ministries, through the Archdiocesan Secretariat for Evangelization and Discipleship. Most recently, I have been serving as chaplain of the newly built Shrine of Our Lady of Good Voyage, in South Boston s Seaport District. I am so very happy to be back in full-time parish life, especially at our two Quincy parishes. I am a South Shore native, growing up in Braintree and attending Sacred Heart Church in Weymouth Landing. My parents are Paul and Ann Marie and my sister is Julie. You may see them from time to time as they are literally minutes away from both parishes (I don t know where I would be without their constant love, support and prayers for my priesthood-i am blessed!). After attending Sacred Heart School I went to Xaverian Brothers High School followed by Stonehill College. I received a B.S. in Business Administration with a concentration in accounting. Like St. Matthew the Tax Collector, the Lord turned His merciful gaze upon this sinner, and called him to personal friendship and ultimately to be one of His priests. I entered the Seminary in 1997 and was ordained six years later on May 24, 2003. I just celebrated my 15th anniversary. Where did the years go? I love being a Catholic! I love being a priest! I am proud to be Catholic and I hope you are as well. I hope you are proud of your parish and are moved to tell others about it (and yes, even invite them to Mass). This summer will afford me the time to get to know that parish you love (and which I am confident I will love as well). I am eager to hear about the unique histories of St. John s and St. Joseph s as well as the varieties of charisms, services and workings that each uses to build up the Body of Christ (1Cor. 12:4-6). As shepherd and spiritual father, I am also eager to unite us together as a Collaborative family, as one Body in Christ, who are called to be Disciples in Mission. Since the beginning of his pontificate, Pope Francis has been calling us, as members of the Church, to rediscover our missionary identity. Just days before he was elected as the 265th Successor of St. Peter, he wrote that a missionary Church is one that goes out from itself toward the existential peripheries. My hope is that we will discover anew the Father s love for us in Jesus Christ, and through the power of the Holy Spirit, under the protection and intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a new Pentecost filled with missionary disciples will be unleashed to bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the (spiritually) blind..to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord (Luke 4:18). I kindly ask for your prayers. As I mentioned, this is my first go around as a pastor and my learning curve is the size of Mount Everest, however I know that the Lord has called me to serve you at such a time as this. I am confident that His grace will be sufficient, and that TOGETHER as Disciples in Mission, the Collaborative family of St. John s and St. Joseph s will do great things for Our Lord who has done great things for us! My love and prayers, Fr Matt+ P.S. It takes me a while to memorize names (never mind parishioners from two communities) so please be patient with me and please keep repeating until I say it back to you. :)
