THE WEEKLY MESSENGER Week of September 9, 2018 Three weeks ago we heard John s gospel s version of Peter s confession of faith. This week we hear Mark s version, when Peter says, You are the Messiah. In John, the stumbling block is Jesus invitation to eat his flesh, given for the life of the world. In Mark too the scandal has to do with Jesus words about his own coming death, and here Peter himself stumbles over Jesus words. But Jesus is anointed (the meaning of messiah ) in Mark only on the way to the cross (14:3); so we are anointed in baptism with the sign of the cross. Pastor Kevin I will be away this Sunday through September 24 th. I have been asked by the Southwest Pennsylvania Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America to serve as a translator for a guest from their companion synod in Madagascar. As there are not many in the United States who can do that, the honor this time falls to me. Please call Pastor Frank Anderson (803) 730-4075 Sept. 15>21 or Pastor Mike Watson (803) 359-7993 Sept. 21>24 for any pastoral emergencies. Mark your calendars now for our congregational homecoming. We will gather for Sunday School, for worship and then for a covered dish supper following church in the Fellowship Hall. Come renew friendships! Come celebrate being part of the family of Christ known as St. James! Come help bury the time capsule from our 125 th anniversary.
