1 THE GOSPEL OF LUKE JESUS CHRIST THE SON OF MAN LUKE CHAPTER 7: 11-17 TAPE NUMBER SMX607 OCTOBER 1, 2006 THE TITLE OF THE MESSAGE: "What Faith Has to Do" the humanity and divinity of Jesus Christ, the son of god, and the son of man SUBJECT TOPICALLY REFERENCED UNDER: Faith, Authority of God, Healing, Life Again Introduction to the Text; Luke 7:11-17 Statement of Textual Summation and Theme Our Last Time Together, We Looked at "What Faith Has to Say" 1.) Faith says think outside the box v.1-5 1a.) Because faith calls for help = it's not proud!!! a certain centurion s servant, who was dear to him, was sick and ready to die 1b.) Because faith knows to get to Jesus = he's the one!!! the centurion had heard about Jesus 1c.) Because faith cries out to God = and there no other And they came to Jesus, and they begged Him earnestly. All These Things Shatter Our Concept as to how to approach God

He's Outside of What We Create to Contain Him. What Faith Has to Say Is 2.) Faith says we're not worthy v.6-8 2a.) To have the Lord be part of our lives = guilt can haunt Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof. 2b.) To be invited into the presence of God = who are we? I did not even think myself worthy to come to You. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. 2c.) To have things be changed for us = can I start over? Jesus, I'm also a man under authority What Faith Has to Say Is 3.) Faith says anything is possible with God v.9-10 3a.) Because the Lord takes notice = He's listening in now When Jesus HEARD these things, He MARVELED at him, and TURNED around and SAID 3b.) Because it's what the Lord is looking for = impossible looking to the crowd that followed Him, I say to you, I HAVE NOT FOUND such great FAITH, not even in Israel! 3c.) Because it's the Lord who gets the glory = not us 2 And those who were sent, "returning" to the house, found the servant WELL who had been sick.

Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd. 12 And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; for she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, Do not weep. 14 Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, Young man, I say to you, arise. 15 So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother. :16 Then fear came upon all, and they glorified God, saying, A great prophet has risen up among us ; and, God has visited His people. 17 And this report about Him went throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region. THE VILLAGE OF NAIN The Geography of Nain (nah-in) is 10 Miles S.E. of Nazareth, Nazareth is North of Jerusalem or maybe this will help, it's about 7,600 miles East of Chino Hills - - if That Helps! 1.) Is to see in the dark v.11-12 Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd. 12 And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; for she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. This Is The Sad Scene First - It's One of Great Concern for the Community Because It was Not So Common for a Widow to Lose a Son. Second - In a Moment, This Woman, was a Mother No More. And This Woman, Had No Longer Been a Wife "Death is a Very Remarkable Reality" Great Lamentation and Loving Support. There is little doubt that this woman and her son where greatly loved. For one, the event is recorded in the bible; two, the emotions that surrounds this situation are very intense. 3

Is to see in the dark 1a.) When it's dark - we can hope for a new day 4 Verse 11-12a Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd. 12 And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man When It's Dark - we hope for a new day! Down deep inside you and I have a hunger for what hope can bring. It's hope that makes us get up in the morning or do this or do that. But what if your hope is in something or someone that's unable to deliver? = Hopeless? What do we do when hopelessness arrives? We lay it, them down before the Lord - that becomes our hope now! "I Will Hope in The Lord Concerning This Thing" It's Either His Way of Hope or You re left to Cope (don t cope, but hope, you dope) To Us, as Mere Human's, It's What The Coming of Morning Symbolizes, will there be a new day, all I need is a break, will this day be different? Psalms 5:3 My voice You shall hear in the morning, O LORD; In the morning I will direct it to You, And I will look up. The Disciples were There - Their Faith was in Training! The Crowds were There - Their Faith was Unknown! In a Crowd, In a Church, There Will only be a Few, If not only One Man or Woman that will Determine to See a Situation with the Eyes of Faith.

Is to see in the dark 1b.) When it's dark - we can look to the Lord for life Verse 12b a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; for she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. Be careful Reader The Bible Said in Verse 11 "Now it happened, the day after " (Luke 7:1-10, 20 miles away in Capernaum) a dead man was being carried out, On this day - as death had done it's thing, it was the grave's turn now to get to open its mouth - one more time! Her Life Would Be Swallowed Up By That Grave Today The only son of his mother // ; for she was a widow YOU CANT TELL ME JESUS WAS NOT AWARE OF AN APPOINTMENT THAT HIS FATHER HAD SET UP FOR HIM IN THE TOWN OF NAIN This Was Her Funeral Too; The end of her life had come in too many ways to count 5 Verse 12c And a large crowd from the city was with her. What an Irony, And a large crowd from the city was with her.

<<That's Not Possible, Best We Can Try, It's Not Possible>> She was surrounded by a crowd of people, but she had never been more alone as she was now. and, and, the worse was yet to come, tomorrow morning loomed in the back of her mind. She would awake alone into what feels like a bad dream no sounds, no conversation, no parent orders to bark out Johnny don t forget your lunch In that casket, lay her future, her hope, her provision, her life! 2 Samuel 12:23 David cried about his dead son and said "he is dead; why should I now fast? Can I bring him back to me again? but there shall come a day when I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me. Is to see in the dark 1c.) When it's dark - we can draw closer to God 6 Verse 12 And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; for she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. 2.) Is to believe in the impossible v.13-14 13 When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, Do not weep. 14 Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, Young man, I say to you, arise.

Is to believe in the impossible 2a.) Believing in what the Lord has said Verse 13 When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, Do not weep. It is said that the loss of a child is the most unnatural thing to have happen to a parent. Carl Jung said that "losing a child is like placing of a period in the middle of a sentence" IN GREEK, LANGUAGE MEANS Saw - ei dw eido, i -do; he beheld her as taking her into his heart. He studied her situation, her plight, her life. He Knew Her Story, Past, Present and Future This Sounds Very Cruel and Quite Insane without Faith Funerals, Dying, and Death "people will say - it's a natural thing, it's just part of life, the moment we re born, we begin to die." What a Minute, Then Why Does It Feel So Wrong, so Out of Place? (because Adam and Eve were never created to die, death is a spiritual symptom) The Bible Teaches That Death "Stings" The Human Heart The Bible Teaches That the "Grave Wins" in The End. Jesus is Introducing Fulfilled Prophecy. Jesus is announcing, "the one that has been promised to destroy this greatest fear of yours has come. 1 Corinthians. 15:56-57 The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 7

The Bible Teaches That Death "Stings" The Human Heart O Death, where is your sting? The Bible Teaches That the "Grave Wins" in The End. It's Hell that gets the Victory! Verse 13 IN GREEK, LANGUAGE MEANS compassion splagcni zomai splagchnizomai, splangkh-nid -zom-ahee; no stronger word to communicate pity and association. To have the liver, heart, lungs heave or yearn. The greatest of sympathy, effecting another physically. John 11:32 Then, when Mary came where Jesus was, and saw Him, she fell down at His feet, saying to Him, Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. :33 Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled. (he groaned with compassion - to snort or expel like a horse) there was a physical, involuntary breath that was forced out of Jesus mouth Lamentations 3:22 It is of the Lord s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. :23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. Lamentations 3:32 Though he brings (allows) grief, he also is compassionate according to the greatness of his unfailing love. At The Death of Lazarus, Jesus' Good Friend - - John 11:35 Records The Shortest, and Most Compassionate Verse in all of the Bible "Jesus wept." This Was His Grief Over What Death Has Done to Mankind (how, in this world, can you not love him with all of your heart, soul and life?) I Am So Proud of My Jesus did you know he speaks Russian, and German, Peruvian, and French, he speaks Swahili and Vanuatu he even speaks Jack, Mary, Mike 8

Is to believe in the impossible 2b.) Believing in what the Lord is saying 9 Verse 14 Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, Young man, I say to you, arise. Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. If You Could Have Heard Brakes Screeching, You Would Have. Eyes Where on Jesus, Ears Attune, Something was About to Happen. Death was About to Meet It's Match. Whenever Jesus Walks into a Room, Sin has to Step Back. Whenever Jesus Comes In Death Begins to Tremble. 1Corinthians 15:52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.54 So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory? 56 The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. He came and touched the open coffin The Jews Were Forbidden to Touch a Dead Body. It was declared to be unclean. Death now owned it and decay was at work. Death was, is, to be Seen as It Is - Catastrophic and Final. Then, Jesus Delivers The One and Only Remedy for Death and Decay

And He said, Young man, I say to you, arise. IN GREEK, LANGUAGE MEANS this is a situation, a miracle, that transcends all others on earth, that God would raise the dead. - there's more here. This Here, Is Most Remarkable the body was dead, lifeless, cold and empty, but somewhere, somehow, the young man was alive and listening from the realm of the dead. He could hear the voice of Jesus Christ piercing that spiritual realm and man had to obey Jesus' command, Get Up! Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, Young man, I say to you, arise. I Do Funerals, I Bury People, And Many Times the Dead Man Looks Like He Should Get Up! Their Dead and Gone - The Shell Remains but Then There Are People, Young Men, Who are Living, But not Alive. Their Physically Walking, But Spiritually Dead. Jesus Says to You, "Get Up, Arise You Dead Man, Arise from Your Coffin of Self. - of pleasure, of drugs, of power, of influence, Arise you Dead Man. "Jesus Didn t Die on The Cross to Make Bad Men Good. Jesus Suffered and Died on the Cross to Make Dead Men Live!" Ephesians 2:5 even when we were dead in trespasses (sins), He made us alive together with Christ (for by grace you have been saved) Notice With Me; That The Voice of Jesus Christ is Heard Beyond the Dead. The Grave! This is Yet Another Argument That Jesus Christ, Is God in Flesh 10

Revelation 1:17-18 The Apostle John said "And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last. 18 I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death. Dead People Can t Hear, They Can t See, They Can t Think, Personal Application Living Without Trust and Dependence Upon The Lord keeps us in a coffin of fear and casket of doubt 3.) Is to honor God with your life v.15-17 15 So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother. :16 Then fear came upon all, and they glorified God, saying, A great prophet has risen up among us ; and, God has visited His people. 17 And this report about Him went throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region. (as far as chino hills, California) Is to honor God with your life 3a.) With what we are doing with Jesus Christ Verse 15a So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. IN GREEK, LANGUAGE MEANS Began to Speak - a rcomai archomai. to commence in order of time, to rehearse from the beginning John 5:25 Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. 11 The Other View is He Began to Speak of His Death Experience

Verse 15b and What Happens in the Realm of the spirit. "I saw this light at the end of the tunnel " Can You Do This? Can You Do This? Can You Do This? Can You Do This? to sit up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother (alive) Last Sunday, In Russia, The Invitation, The Preparation and Expectation of Heaven (the slipping, dying, story of revival) Is to honor God with your life 3b.) With what we are saying about Jesus Christ Verse 16 Then fear came upon all, and (1) they glorified God, (2) saying, A great prophet has risen up among us ; and, (3) God has visited His people. This is What's to Happen at Every Church Service; It Should be Said That. A great prophet has risen up among us ; - That's Jesus, and, God has visited His people. - That's the Message of The Gospel! Is to honor God with your life 3c.) With what we are telling of Jesus Christ 12

13 Verse 17 And this report (rumour, news, about Him went throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region. (as far as Chino Hills, California) report = (rumor, news, table-talk) To reveal information, intentional or unintentionally. To talk about Jesus, to introduce him into conversations inadvertently or indirectly. With effectiveness or expressive. Matthew 11:3-4 John The Baptist Asked his Disciples to ask this of Jesus; Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another? :4 Jesus answered and said to them, Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: 5 The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; and the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them. Psalm 145:4-6 One generation will commend your works to another; they will tell of your mighty acts. :5 They will speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty, and I will meditate on your wonderful works. :6 They will tell of the power of your awesome works, and I will proclaim your great deeds. Jesus Christ Showed Us What He Can Do In The Life of Someone Who Will Only Considering Him and His Claims. Jesus Acted Out in Public What Every Heart Longs for In Private. And this report about Him went throughout (What was The Report? - It's The Same Report Today) He Makes People to Live Again If You Need Ministry of Any Kind as soon as this song is over, you come forward today, and experience God's mercy and grace in your own life. End of Study
