2018 Summer Sermon Series from Ephesians We Have Good News! The Apostle Paul writes this letter to Ephesus, a leading economic and political power in the ancient Roman world, that rose to its pinnacle of grandeur in the 1 st and 2 nd centuries. With many religious and political voices claiming truth and authority over the other, the people became not only confused, but at strong odds with each other as they aligned with various groups. With strong arguments of claiming the truth, and with the digging in of heels, they became fiercely divided. (Sound familiar?) Paul writes to warn the Ephesians to beware of teachers and professing believers that teach perverse and untrue things. The goal of Paul s instruction was love which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. Paul has GOOD NEWS for those in Ephesus, and for us, which is what this series will uncover and share. July 15 Good News of Salvation Ephesians 1: 3-14 July 22 Good News of Peace Ephesians 2: 11-22 July 29 Servants of Good News Ephesians 3: 1-13 August 5 Good News of Acceptance Ephesians 3: 14-21 August 12 Good News of Growth Ephesians 4: 1-16 August 19 Good News of Love Ephesians 4:25 5:2 August 26 Good News of Strength Ephesians 6: 10-20

Welcome and Grace of Hospitality *Bringing In the Light of Christ and Opening Praise No. 431 Let There Be Peace on Earth *Call to Worship (responsively) God, we believe you have called us to unity, but often we have isolated ourselves from others. God, forgive us for the times we have turned our backs on those who are different. God, we believe you have called us to live together as one body. God, forgive us for the times we have created division within your worldwide church. God, we believe you ask us to look, listen, and learn from others. God, forgive us for the times we have ridiculed and attacked those with different viewpoints. God, we believe you ask us to accept and seek to understand all who are called by your name. Forgive us for the times we have offended you by failing to love others as we do ourselves. God, we believe you call us to be one even as you are one. Forgive us for the disunity we have harbored and make us one. *Hymn No. 545 The Church s One Foundation

Prayer of Approach (in unison) Almighty God, you have built your Church on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone. Join us together in unity of spirit by their teaching, that we may become a holy temple, acceptable to you: through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Jeff Childress Good News of Peace Morning Prayer and Lord s Prayer Response to the Spoken Word Youth Band *Affirmation of Faith We believe in one God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. We proclaim Jesus Christ, the crucified and risen One, confessing him as Lord to the glory of God the Father.

In the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, we acclaim Jesus as the Lord of the church, the Head over all things, the beginning of a new creation. We are a pilgrim people, always on the way towards the promised goal; on the way, Christ feeds us with word and sacrament, and we have the gift of the Spirit in order that we may not lose the way. We will live and work within the faith and unity of the one holy catholic and apostolic Church, bearing witness to that unity which is both Christ's gift and his will. We affirm as members of the church the faith of Christ crucified and risen. Together with all the people of God, we will serve the world for which Christ died, and we await with hope the day of the Lord Jesus. *Hymn No. 428 For the Healing of the Nations *Benediction *Closing Praise: VBS Children *Please stand if you are able CCLI#1116193
