Lynn Landweer Wycliffe Bible Translators- Texas Lynn Landweer is one of our missionaries that lives within the United States. She is currently serving at the Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics (GIAL) in Dallas, TX. In her current position at GIAL she helps to equip men and women who are responding to the call of foreign missions. The vast majority of the students enrolled at GIAL have as their motivation for study a commitment to missionary service. Most of the students end up serving on the mission field within 2 years of when they complete their course study. Lynn s role is to teach them sociolinguistic principles that will inform them of issues that will impact their potential effectiveness in serving among the unreached or poorly reached groups of the world. Lynn has a vast amount of experience and expertise in her field. Her fieldwork spans 15 years of sociolinguistic research (1986-2001) in Papua New Guinea, including research and development of a language viability assessment instrument and associated data gathering tools; she has also worked on the documentation of the languages of 17 disparate ethnic groups; professional presentations and publications of the sociolinguistic situation of Papua New Guinea; and guest lecturer posts all between 1986-2001. She earned her doctorate in sociolinguistics in 2006 from the University of Essex, Colchester, England. Prayer Points Lynn is preparing for retirement in the next year or so. She has asked for prayer as she makes this transition. Pray for wisdom for both her and GIAL. You can also be praying for Lynn s current class of Undergraduate students. She is preparing the curriculum for them. Pray that she will be able to reach, engage, and teach these students. Note to Granada Lynn has taken the time to write a note to all her Granada Family. She wrote I am a fallible human being, saved by the incredible grace of God, doing what He has placed before me, as best as I can, by the wonderful support of people like you, both financially and in prayer. If it is time for me retire, I will look back on my 35 year career with Wycliffe with wonder and amazement that God took a shy, insecure, bookish gal and lead her around the world, to meet and serve and love folks way beyond the California borders and culture, to points around the world. What he has for me beyond 2018 is still up for grabs, but He is faithful. I wait and see and thank you for your input and prayers. Welcome - If you are a guest today we thank you for coming. We would appreciate it if you would complete a communication card from the pew rack. As our guest, please do not feel obligated to put something in the offering. EASTER SUNDAY APRIL 1 8:30 & 11:00am Worship Services 9:45am Baptism & Courtyard Fellowship Invitations cards are in the foyer. They are grateful for their godly family, Granada family, and for their love that keeps growing sweeter. Sermon Notes March 25, 2018 Eric Oldenburg When Kingdom and Culture Clash 3 sins that shouldn't characterize us (v.3) Immorality Sexual deviance Impurity Moral corruption Greed Materialistic consumerism 3 ways we shouldn't speak (v. 4) Filthiness Obscene gestures & speech Silly Talk Nonsensical (party) babble Course Jesting Vulgar, witty turns of phrase 3 kinds of people we shouldn't be (v. 5) Immoral Sexual deviant Impure Morally corrupt Covetous Materialistic consumerist 3 remaining questions What is God going to do about our broken world? (v. 6) What can we do to overcome these particular temptations? (v. 4, 7) What should we do when we act in these ways? (v. 3, 5) When Kingdom and Culture Clash Some sins that plague humanity in any age: Reflect on why Paul might have chosen the 3 sins of sexual deviance, moral corruption and materialistic consumerism as the focus of verses 3 and 5. In light of the command to imitate God and walk in love from 5:1-2, what do you notice about these sins? Watching our words: In a sex-crazed culture (whether the 21 st century West or the Greco-Roman culture of the 1st century), speech is often affected. If "words will never hurt me," why is Paul so insistent that we avoid filthy, demeaning words in verse 4? Who will inherit the Kingdom? Look at the 3 New Testament passages that describe those who will not enter the Kingdom of God (I Co. 6:9-10, Ga. 5:19-21, Ep. 5:5). If we are all sinners and commit these sins even after choosing to follow Jesus, what hope do we have? Look specifically in Ep. 5:3-7 for clues as to why Paul is not describing believers in verse 5. What have you learned from earlier passages in Ep. that help answer this question? Beware of "empty words": Do you believe that the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience (see Ep. 2:1-2)? Or have you heard anyone express the idea that because Christ died to forgive us it no longer matters whether or not we sin? How would you answer yourself or someone else who tried to "deceive" like this? Resurrection power for radical living: As we prepare to celebrate Easter this coming Sunday, meditate on Ep. 1:18-23 and Ph. 3:10-11. Ask God to remind you of the transforming work He's done in your life, which gives you the continued power to overcome the rampant sins of Ep. 5:3-7. Ask Him also to inspire you to come up with specific ways to work at turning away from these sins.
