Marion Gilroy fonds. - [1906], 1930-1980. 93 cm of textual records. 19 slides: colour. 36 photographs: 33 b&w and 3 colour. 7 audio reels. Biographical Sketch Fonds Description Marion Gilroy was born in Nova Scotia in 1912. She received her B.A. from Acadia University (1932) and went on to complete an M.A. at the University of Toronto (1933). While working as a research librarian at the Public Archives of Nova Scotia (1933-1940), she completed a Bachelor of Library Science degree from Columbia University (1939), where she attended as a Carnegie fellow. In 1946, Gilroy moved to Saskatchewan to become supervisor of the Saskatchewan Regional Libraries (1946-1963). In the midst of promoting the development of regional libraries in the province, she also managed to complete graduate study in librarianship at the University of Chicago (1959). In 1963, Gilroy left Saskatchewan to undertake a teaching career as an Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia's School of Librarianship. She taught several courses on public libraries, special libraries, readers' services and book selection. Gilroy also went on to publish a book and a number of articles, surveys and reports on regional library systems and library needs across Canada such as Montreal Island and Northwest Territories. After her death in 1981, her papers were donated to the Archives. Scope and Content The fonds consists of biographical information, writings, publications, course notes and assignments, course materials, minutes, reports, subject files, correspondence, slides, photographs and audio reels of interviews pertaining to her book As We Remember It. The fonds consists of 8 series: Biographical, Speeches and Writings; Post-Secondary Studies; Saskatchewan; UBC School of Librarianship; Subject Files; Correspondence; Slides; and Audio Recordings. Notes File list available. Selected photographs have been digitized and included in UBC Archives Historical Photograph Database (UBC 87.1) No further accruals are expected.

Series Descriptions Biographical, Speeches and Writings Series. - 1933-1971. 10 cm of textual records. Series consists of biographical sketches with a list of publications, speeches, writings, and published works. Post-Secondary Studies Series. - 1933-1959. 17.5 cm of textual records. Series consists of University of Toronto s M.A thesis (1933), class assignments and syllabi from Columbia University (1936-1939) and finally, class notes and lists from the University of Chicago (1958-1959). Saskatchewan Series. - [1906]-1978. 10.5 cm of textual records. Series consists of records pertaining to her time as supervisor of Saskatchewan Regional Libraries. The records include personal financial records, official correspondence, conference proceedings, annual reports, budget proposals, minutes of meetings, speeches and writings, and library publications. UBC School of Librarianship Series. - 1961-1968. 6.5 cm of textual records. Series pertains to her tenure as an Associate Professor at the School of Librarianship in the 1960s. The records consist of personal financial records, minutes of faculty staff meetings, and course materials for the courses she taught. Subject Files Series. - [1938]-1968. 26 cm of textual records. Series consists of transcripts of oral interviews for her book As We Remember It, biographies, book lists, reports on regional library systems in British Columbia and Quebec, and conference notes. Correspondence Series. - 1930-1980. 22.5 cm of textual records. Series consists of an address book, incoming and outgoing personal correspondence and postcards, and miscellaneous correspondence directed to other correspondents.

Slides and Photographs Series. - [1880-197-?]. 19 slides: color. 36 photographs: 33 b&w and 3 color; 26.5 x 21.8 cm or smaller. Series consists of colored slides, black and white photographs and colored photographs of Marion Gilroy, the Gilroy family, North Central Saskatchewan Regional Library board members and employees, Dr. Helen Stewart, Marjorie Holmes and Muriel Ffoulkes. Selected photographs have been digitized and included in UBC Archives Historical Photograph Database (UBC 87.1) Audio Reel Series. - 1961-1967. 7 audio reels. Series consists of recorded oral interviews for the book As We Remember It. Interviews include Helen Gordon Stewart, Margaret Clay, Marjorie Holmes, C. K. Morrison, Muriel Ffoulkes and H.
