Issue 4 February 17 2016 MARRIAGE AND FAMILY MINISTRY UPDATE Inside this issue January Board Report by Jim Kawashima, Moderator 2 Financial Report 2 City of Gardena Appreciation by Pastor James Chang 3 Work Day at GVBC 4 Annual Business Meeting Family News 5 Primetimer s Experiences 4 5 FYI Events Calendar 6 Announcements 7 Our Worship Schedule 8 Celebrating ONE Marriage Conference This past weekend, 57 couples and a few singles joined us at the Celebrating ONE Marriage Conference at GVBC. We had dating and engaged couples, newly married couples, all the way up to couples married over 50 years! We were reminded that God designed husband and wife to be one flesh. The marriage vow is a sacred commitment before God, a covenant promise to be faithful, steadfast, and sacrificial over the course of a lifetime. Though our selfcenteredness gets in the way, God uses marriage to make us holy. As we pursue holiness in a right relationship with Him, we are able to get back to Celebrating ONE celebrating the one flesh of God s original design. It was a great weekend filled with a balance of serious moments and fun moments. Main session speakers were Pastor Steve and myself, and marriage workshops were given by Bill Dresser and Stephanie Nakayama, both Licensed Family and Marriage Therapists from within our GVBC family. During lunch on Saturday, we got a kick out of seeing Paul Hirano catch the garter toss and Karen Kawashima catch the bouquet toss. With a special cake-cutting ceremony, we also honored the couples in our midst who have been married for 50 years or more Ron and Anne Matsuda (50 years), Richard and Keiko Imatomi (50 years), and George and Shig Hirano (66 years). We shared laughter and tears as we heard personal testimonies and identified with the joys and struggles of dealing with the complex issues of marriage. It was an amazing weekend and we all left the conference challenged and encouraged! Re Engage Starting on Friday, March 11, we will be launching a program called Re Engage, which is open to all married couples. We will meet every Friday from 7:00-8:45pm at GVBC, for the 13 weeks between March 11 June 10 (no meeting on March 25, Good Friday). Here is the format we ll be using: 7:00-7:30pm large group teaching / testimony 7:30-8:45pm small group sharing / discussion There will be about 5 couples in each small group, including a mentor couple who will lead the group. The curriculum will include topics of love and brokenness, grace and humility, communication and conflict, and much more. If you are interested in being a part of Re Engage, please contact me at Daniel@gvbc.net or call me at the church office, ext. 681 and I can give you more information. Please continue to pray for the Marriage and Family Ministry at GVBC! God bless you. Daniel Matsuda Associate Pastor, Marriage and Family

JANUARY BOARD REPORT By Jim Kawashima HAPPY NEW YEAR! Your 2016 Board of Deacon's met for the first time this year on January 5, welcoming our new, albeit experienced, Board Members. Former Moderators David Cheng and Bob Matsushima accompanied newcomer Kate Bun, past Assistant Treasurer Silvio Carrara who takes on the Treasurer position, and Hermann Schurr who returns as Church Clerk. After beginning with a time of silence centering on Christ and a short devotional, our first order of business was to approve the minutes from the December 1, 2015 Board Meeting. We continued with the approval of the October financial statement as presented by Pastor Steve who also reviewed the financials in its entirety. It was a good review for all of us who now have a very good understanding of our finances and budget. Our income for October was $106,758 with expenses of $128,680 which resulted in a negative $21,922. Year-to-date we were negative $28,855. But, not to worry. Our revenues for November and December (unaudited) were $123,009 and $167,124, respectively. Completed statements were not available at the time of our meeting. We approved membership for Cynthia Iiyama, Alex and Douglas Okamuro. Please welcome our newest members of GVBC. We also approved the removal of two members, one having gone home to our Lord and one transfer. Discussion items included the forming of a committee consisting of approximately five church members to review and recommend changes to our church constitution, Christmas Eve Service, and the January 7 Come Forward Communion Service. We welcome any comments and feedback from anyone who would like to address anything our church is doing. As we move forward into this new year, I pray all of us will continue to grow in our spiritual walk with Jesus and apply whatever knowledge of God's words we gain through Sunday sermons, individual and/or group Bible study and our community groups. Praise God for the body of Christ here at GVBC.
