Amen - TODAY S MESSAGE FROM OUR GOD - Theme: Rejoice Greatly in the Triune God! 1 Peter 1:1-9 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To the pilgrims of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 2 elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied. 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, 8 whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, 9 receiving the end of your faith -- the salvation of your souls. - PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP - P: Thus says the Lord: The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; who can understand it? I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, even to give to each man according to his ways, according to the results of his deeds. (Jer. 17:9-10) C: Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? And who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted up His soul to falsehood, and has not sworn deceitfully. (Ps. 24:3,4) + Father of heaven, whose love profound A ransom for our souls hath found, To us Thy pardoning love extend. P: O Father, we enter Your holy place to worship You. However, we are sinners. How then will You accept our worship and bless us for the coming week? It is an act of grace that we seek from You. Cleanse us from our sins for Jesus sake, so that with pure hearts and clean lips we can sing Your praises. + Almighty Son, Incarnate Word, Our Prophet, Priest, Redeemer, Lord, To us Thy saving grace extend. ALL: O Lord, You have searched me and known me. Even before there is a word on my tongue, behold, O Lord, You know it all. You have seen the evil that I have done and the good that I left undone. Clinging to the cross of Jesus Christ, I appeal to You for mercy. Cleanse me in Jesus blood. Purify my mind from every evil thought, my lips from every evil word, my hands from every evil deed. º -1- -2-
Renew my heart by the working of Your Holy Spirit so that I may present my body as a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to You, which is my spiritual service of worship. + Eternal Spirit, by whose breath The soul is raised from sin and death, To us Thy quickening power extend. P: Be of good cheer, children of God, for our Father is forever merciful. The blood of Jesus Christ, His Son, cleanses us from all our sins, for Christ loves us and gave Himself up for us, that He might sanctify and cleanse us. We are now holy and blameless before God and our worship is pleasing to Him. + Thrice holy! Father, Spirit, Son, Mysterious Godhead, Three in One, Grace, pardon, life, to us extend. Amen (TLH 242) Opening Hymn - 239 Come, Thou Almighty King - OUR DIRECTION FROM GOD - (A petition to God for help followed by the Scripture readings.) P: Let us pray - Almighty and everlasting God, since You have given us, Your servants, grace to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity by the confession of true faith, and to worship the true Unity in the power of Your divine majesty, keep us also steadfast in this true faith and worship, and defend us ever from all our adversaries; for You, O Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, live and reign, one God, now and forever ALL: + "A- - - men" P: Blessed be the Holy Trinity and the undivided Unity C: Let us give glory to Him because He has shown His mercy to us. P: Give unto the LORD, O you mighty ones, C: Give unto the LORD glory and strength. P: Give unto the LORD the glory due to His name; C: Worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness. P: The voice of the LORD is powerful; C: The voice of the LORD is full of majesty. P: Blessed be the Holy Trinity and the undivided Unity C: Let us give glory to Him because He has shown His mercy to us. ~ OUR CONFESSION OF FAITH ~ The Athanasian Creed (One of the three ancient creeds of the Christian Church [along with Apostles and Nicene]. Note: catholic in this creed means universal ) Whosoever will be saved, before all things it is necessary that he hold the catholic faith. Which faith except every one do keep whole and undefiled, without doubt he shall perish everlastingly. And the catholic faith is this, that we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity; Neither confounding the Persons, nor dividing the Substance. For there is one Person of the Father, another of the Son, and another of the Holy Ghost. But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost is all one: the glory equal, the majesty coeternal. Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Ghost. The Father uncreate, the Son uncreate, and the Holy Ghost uncreate. The Father incomprehensible, the Son incomprehensible, and the Holy Ghost incomprehensible. The Father eternal, the Son eternal, and the Holy Ghost eternal. -3- -4-
And yet they are not three Eternals, but one Eternal. As there are not three Uncreated nor three Incomprehensibles, but one Uncreated and one Incomprehensible. So likewise the Father is almighty, the Son almighty, and the Holy Ghost almighty. And yet they are not three Almighties, but one Almighty. So the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Ghost is God. And yet they are not three Gods, but one God. So likewise the Father is Lord, the Son Lord, and the Holy Ghost Lord. And yet not three Lords, but one Lord. For like as we are compelled by the Christian verity to acknowledge every Person by Himself to be God and Lord, So are we forbidden by the catholic religion to say, There be three Gods, or three Lords. Scripture Readings These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name. - John 20:31 Old Testament Lesson ~ Numbers 6:22-27 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 23 Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them, 24 The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: 25 The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: 26 The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace. 27 And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them. P: Alleluia, Alleluia. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of His glory. Alleluia! (Is. 6:3b) ALL: + Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Athanasian Creed, cont. - The Father is made of none: neither created nor begotten. The Son is of the Father alone; not made, nor created, but begotten. The Holy Ghost is of the Father and of the Son: neither made, nor created, nor begotten, but proceeding. So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Ghost, not three Holy Ghosts. And in this Trinity none is before or after other; none is greater or less than another; But the whole three Persons are coeternal together, and coequal: so that in all things, as is aforesaid, the Unity in Trinity and the Trinity in Unity is to be worshiped. He, therefore, that will be saved must thus think of the Trinity. Gospel Lesson ~ Matthew 28:16-20 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. 17 And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Athanasian Creed, conclusion - Furthermore, it is necessary to everlasting salvation that he also believe faithfully the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. For the right faith is, that we believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is God and Man; God of the Substance of the Father, begotten before the worlds; and Man of the substance of His mother, born in the world; Perfect God and perfect Man, of a reasonable soul and human flesh subsisting. -5- -6-
Equal to the Father as touching His Godhead, and inferior to the Father as touching His manhood; Who, although He be God and Man, yet He is not two, but one Christ: One, not by conversion of the Godhead into flesh, but by taking the manhood into God; One altogether; not by confusion of Substance, but by unity of Person. For as the reasonable soul and flesh is one man, so God and Man is one Christ; Who suffered for our salvation; descended into hell, rose again the third day from the dead; He ascended into heaven; He sitteth on the right hand of the Father, God Almighty; from whence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. At whose coming all men shall rise again with their bodies, and shall give an account of their own works. And they that have done good shall go into life everlasting; and they that have done evil, into everlasting fire. This is the catholic faith; which except a man believe faithfully and firmly, he cannot be saved. ~ The Offertory ~ + Let men with their united voice Adore the eternal God And spread His honors and their joys Through nations far abroad. Let faith and love and duty join One grateful song to raise; Let saints in earth and heaven combine In harmony and praise. Amen. (TLH 248:4-5) Hymn 243 Oh, that I Had a Thousand Voices ~ Offering of Thankful Hearts ~ ~ Prayers and Lord s Prayer ~ ~ The Benediction ~ Closing Hymn 250:4 Holy God, We Praise Thy Name Hymn 246 Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty 1 Peter 1:1-9 REJOICE GREATLY IN THE TRIUNE GOD! - He has chosen you - He has begotten you - He keeps you WELCOME TO YOU ALL! STORM DAMAGE IN BOWDLE As many of you may have heard, last Saturday night a large tornado touched down a mile north of Bowdle. Amongst the few farms damaged were two farms belonging to members of our sister congregation, Redeemer in Bowdle. The following is from Pastor Mark Gullerud: Brethren, This past weekend our small town of Bowdle made it on national news. This, however, is not what our small community would consider welcome news. A number of strong, destructive tornadoes twisted their way through our area. One of the tornadoes struck two farms of Redeemer members. The one farm is located about 1 1/2 miles north of Bowdle. One family farm was hit far worse than the other. The one farm, which received the least amount of damage, belongs to Gaylon and Connie Goetz. The tornado completely removed 5 grain bins, tore off the shingles from their home, and did some damage to a machine shed. Thankfully, the house is still inhabitable. The other family farm was devastated. This is Loel and Mary Rieger's farm. The machine sheds, barns, and other out buildings - a total of 5 were completely blown away and scattered all over the surrounding fields. Much of the machinery sustained heavy damage or complete loss. Their home, which was recently remodeled, was torn up so badly that it is uninhabitable. One of their sons had a rather new pickup and a new trailer attached to it containing all of his belongings. They are a total loss. The family was able to salvage some of their household furnishings and belongings. Thankfully, they have a vacant house of Loel's parents nearby which they can move into with what they have left from the storm. That farm also sustained damage from the storm. The families have insurance on some, but not everything that was lost. But how good the insurance is only time will tell when the families hear how much the insurance is willing to pay out. There was an amazing turn out from people in the community who came to both farms in order to help pick up debris from the fields, cut down trees, move belongings to the other house, etc. The local fire department served lunches at both places. Loel said there were about 120 people at his place who were served lunch. Both families appear to be in good spirits. Thankfully, no one was hurt. We are thankful to the Lord for keeping the families safe in this very dangerous situation. In Christ, Pastor Mark Gullerud Redeemer Lutheran Church, Bowdle, SD -9- -10-
