ABOUT THIS SERVICE This service has een used at the Antiochian House of Studies, School of Orthodox Theology as first and foremost and opportunity to praise God using the est practices for Christian music It serves oth an exemplar of East Slavic liturgical practices and its music; it is not only worship, ut also a didactic tool for showing how worship can e eautiful, compelling, and easy to join The music has een selected to represent music from oth the Galician and St Petersurg traditions Also in the execution, students are given the opportunity to sing two of the evening hymns using the tone 6 samohlas or stikhiron melody from one of four traditions: Carpatho-Rusyn Prostopinije, Russian, Ukrainian and Byelorusyn Oikhod, Ukrainian Galician Samojilka, or Kievan chant The arrange and liturgical execution represents a comination of Ukrainian, Russian, and Carpatho-Rusyn practices The following is reakdown of some the practices and music: Trisagion Prayers: The execution is done in the Carpatho-Rusyn style in which priest and cantor alternate etween sections Also, Slavonic texts for the Holy God and Trinitarian doxology have een added using Rusyn and/or Ukrainian pronunciation The plain chant melody is a common Galician chanting tone The psalm is sung with the same melody When all singings join, in order to highlight that piece, the music is sung in parallel thirds The tradition of congregants chanting along with cantors on such prayers and psalmody is part of all East Slavic traditions ut seems to have disappeared in all ut the Carpatho-Rusyn tradition The one exception to this is the chanting of kathismata during the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts, which is done y choirs in the Russian, Byelorusyn, and Ukrainian traditions During the singing of the Psalm, it is arrange in alternating choirs God Is With Us: The melody is one of three Galician Ukrainian Melodies that share a common last measure Typical in the Ukrainian tradition, the verses from Isaiah sung y the presiding priest As such, the modern Ukrainian text has een added As this is small compline, only the refrain for God is with us is repeated etween verses In the Galician tradition, the whole of Z Nami Boh is sung each time y alternating etween the three or two melodies when done on the eve of the feasts of Nativity and Theophany when Great Compline comined with matins as a vigil service The Evening Troparia: In many modern parishes, these verses are sung prostoye or plain chanted However, they are supposed to e sung in tone 8 and 6 as indicated In the case of the tone 8, this is done using Galician tone 8 It is a three part arrangement such that a small group or schola cantorum would sing This three part setting would allow it e done y three women, three men or possile to women and a man singing tenor or ass It has also een sung with the priest singing just the melody and the singers joining on each verse at the point, And save me, O Savior The tone 6 hymns are assigned to a single cantor who would sing it in the tone six of his or her choosing Troparia: These are set in the Oikhod chant system Dismissal: The dismissal uses the traditional Galician style that used only at non-divine liturgy services The final litany is also a Galician setting Fr Silouan Sloan Rolando Feast of the Indiction of the New Year, Septemer 1, 2016 NB Excluding the troparia, which are put out y the Orthodox Church of America, all arrangements are y Fr Silouan The text of the service is adapted from the horologian of Holy Myrrhearers Monastery in Otsego, New York Page 15
