The Outer Guard Knights of Columbus #1143 7132 Marine Road Edwardsville, IL 62025 618-656-4985 Meetings: Third Degree -- 2nd and 4th Mondays at 7:30 p.m. Fourth Degree -- 1st Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Grand Knight Jim Jatcko Telephone: 618-803-0570 www.kofc1143.org outerguard1143@gmail.com www.facebook.com/edwardsvillekofc NOVEMBER 2017 From the Grand Knight Brother Knights, In just a few weeks, the holiday season will be upon us. As we gather later this month with family and friends, let us be mindful of our many blessings. Of course, I give thanks for a patient and loving wife; five children who keep me working and humble; and loyal friends. I m also thankful for the gift of life, my Catholic Faith, good health, brave veterans who have protected our country and flag, good craft beer and Brother Knights who support (and put up with) me. This season is also a time to reach out and help those in need. There are a number of opportunities to do just that highlighted in the pages of this issue of The Outer Guard! God Bless you for all that you do for others. Happy Thanksgiving! Fraternally, Jim Jatcko, Grand Knight Hops for Heroes set for Nov. 18 Our 2nd Annual Hops for Heroes craft beer festival is coming up on Saturday, Nov. 18 from 1:00-5:00pm. Proceeds from the event will send Edwardsville resident and Korean War Veteran Mr. James Paul on an Honor Flight to Washington, DC. Just 125 tickets will be sold for this event, as it will be held inside this year. Purchase tickets for $25 each at the KofC Website at www.kofc1143.com/beerfest. We still need a few volunteers to work the door, man the parking lot and run water to the brewer's tables. Contact Scott Bayles at SJBayles@aol.com to offer to help. Fourth Degree News... Annual Columbus Day Dinner Pictures 11 of our Grand Knights from the past 39 years gathered together at our annual Columbus Day Banquet on Oct. 15. Help Needed After many years as Team 2 Kitchen Leader, Tom Berry has tendered his resignation. I want to thank Tom for his many years of dedication to Team 2 and all of his hard work. With his resignation, the Team 2 Kitchen is in need of a leader and more workers. If you can step in and help out, please contact Lou Carnoali at 618-288-2287 or via email at carnofour@aol.com. All assistance will be greatly appreciated. Lou Carnoali, Fish Fry Co-Chairman Zip Rzeppa signs books after his Columbus Day Banquet address. Coats for Kids Drive Just a reminder that our Coats for Kids Drive, held along with Riverbend Head Start, will continue through Thanksgiving. We are collecting new or lightly used winter coats for babies, toddlers and preschoolers in the Metro East. The collection box is located in the main lobby. Please help us keep every child in our community warm and healthy this winter! ID Drive Continues K. of C. Brothers! The holidays are coming and you know you will need your stash of tootsie rolls. We can help you out, while you continue to help out those persons who have the added life challenge of an intellectual disability. Available at our bar, you get a box of 50 tootsie rolls for a donation of $10. If you are really excited about this prospect, you can actually get an entire case (300 tootsie rolls) for the donation of $60, plus if you buy a case, I can deliver them to you! (Call or text 741-8930). Thank you for your support in this continuing effort! God Bless, Tom Tucker

Volunteer Opportunity The USO of Missouri is currently in great need of volunteer help. The USO facility in Terminal 1 at St. Louis Lambert Airport is open to our active military men and women 24/7. It provides a touch of home for our military while they are traveling thru with good food, a sleeping area, computers, wi-fi, X-box games, movies, a nursery and friendly faces to show kindness and support for all that they do on our behalf. All services provided are free to our military. For more information or to volunteer, please call Mark or Patti Schaake at 363-2371 or 830-4741. Next Rosary at Hope Clinic Brothers! Please join us as we pray the Rosary on the first Saturday of each month starting at 9 AM. If you cannot be present with us, please continue to pray for its immediate closing. Currently there is at least one movement in that regard. A group of doctors is considering buying it to open a wellness center. The more we pray and the greater our numbers, the more likely that this will happen soon. Thank you and God Bless, Tom Tucker Brother Knights Lou Carnoali, Lynn Ripper and Dennis Hessel present a check to Fr. Jeffrey Goeckner and St. Boniface School students on Oct. 10. Christmas Poster Contest Each year, the Knights of Columbus supports the Keep Christ in Christmas campaign to remind people that Christmas is, above all else, a Holy day to celebrate the birth of our Lord. As we do each year, our council will again sponsor the local Knights of Columbus Keep Christ in Christmas poster contest, which is open to all students in Grades 5-8 at St. Boniface School and St. Mary s School. We invite you to join us in voting for your favorite poster design at our December 1 Fish Fry. Hope to see you there! Protecting Your Family Business? You already know that the Knight of Columbus is here for all your personal and family financial protection needs, but did you know that the Order can help secure your business too? As your Knights of Columbus field agent, I can help you protect the continuity of your business for years to come. Business insurance is the term used in the insurance industry to describe the use of life insurance and disability income insurance to solve certain financial needs of businesses and their owners. The products offered through the Order can cover many needs, such as: - Economic loss to the business when a key employee dies. - Disposition of a business owner's interest upon death or other separation from the business. If you've worked hard to establish a business, you owe it to yourself and your family to learn about the opportunities that the Knights of Columbus can offer. With protection for the family, the business, the farm, your retirement, long term care and disability coverage, the Knights of Columbus truly is your shield for all the elements of your life. More KC Pictures 4th Degree Honor Guard gathers after the Red Mass with Bishop Paprocki at St. Boniface on Oct. 15. Soccer Athletes from across our area take part in the 2017 KC Soccer Challenge on Sept. 28 in Highland.

November 1, 2017 Dear Brother Knights; As we enter the Season to be Jolly we are often asked to help make Christmas happier for those less fortunate. Our council will provide a little extra joy for a few Children in the Edwardsville School District on Saturday morning, December 9, through our 36th annual CHILDREN IN NEED Christmas Shopping Spree at Wal-Mart. You are being provided two opportunities by our Council to make your Christmas Season much more meaningful this year. First, you can share in the personal blessing of making financial contribution for these children; second, you can volunteer to be a chaperone for one of these children and experience the CHARITY that our order subscribes to. Please send contributions to: Don Brunworth 50 Rushmore Glen Carbon, IL 62034 Or drop it off at the K.C. hall in an envelope marked Christmas Shopping Spree. All donations go directly to the CHILDREN IN NEED. Make checks to Knights of Columbus # 1143. If you can volunteer a few hours (2-3) of your time on the morning of SATURDAY, December 9 at 8:00 a.m. to assist the children in the purchasing of family Christmas Gifts at Wal-Mart, and helping them WRAP the gifts at the K.C. HALL, please contact Don Brunworth at 288-7641.. We also need many donations of cookies and brownies by 9:00 a.m. at the K.C. HALL, because some of the parents may choose to come for the wrapping; since they must provide transportation. Due to a change in our policy, the chaperones will no longer provide transportation for the kids. This CHARITY project depends on the members generosity and cooperation as well as provides a meaningful method of putting the message of Christ into Christmas. Please save this notice, since it was sent early in order to save on postage!!!!!! Yours in Christ, Don Brunworth, Chairman of CHILDREN IN NEED CHRISTMAS SHOPPING SPREE
