Reports to: Liturgical Commission Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion to the Sick and Homebound Coordinator Position Description Liturgical Commission Chair, currently the Director of Liturgy Ministry Purpose / Objective: To distribute the Eucharist and extend prayerful concern to sick and homebound and to those in assisted care facilities. General Responsibilities of All Ministry Coordinators: Discerns God s message in one s own life regarding stewardship of Time, Talent and Treasure. Is familiar with ministry guidelines and General Parish Procedures, especially facility usage. Maintains updated participant records including phone numbers and email addresses. Recruits new ministry members, using bulletin announcements, etc. Confirms with parish secretary that volunteer is a registered member of Immaculate Conception. Responds to inquiries from prospective ministers, (verbal, email, telephone, Time & Talent sheets, interest sheet on back of registration form) regarding your ministry within ten business days. Maintains accurate records to provide ministry specific input for (see templates): o Quarterly Stewardship Bulletin Report o Annual Stewardship Report o Prepare documentation for this ministry s budget o Ministry Goals and Objectives o Ministry successes Writes and submits bulletin articles and when appropriate, a thank you for the bulletin, especially after special events, giving a full accounting of number of participants, items collected, etc. Keeps the Commission Chair advised of needs, issues, and positive experiences so they can be incorporated into the planning process. Responsibilities of Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion to the Sick and Homebound Coordinator: Organizes or conducts training for new Eucharistic Ministers to the Sick and Homebound according to the guidelines set forth by the Liturgical Commission. Maintains communication with Head of Liturgical and Pastor for new or changed procedures applicable to all ministers. Requests new and replacement name tags from the Parish Secretary. Serves as a member of the Liturgical Commission. Collaborates with pastor for the resolving of issues concerning repeated minister absences. Requests supplies necessary for ministry duties. Maintains updated schedules for ministers. Notifies those being served of any changes to the schedule. Special Activities: Hosts an orientation for new ministers. Attends annual formation session. Annual parish Leadership training. Meetings (when held, frequency, etc.): Meetings are specific to number of individuals needing to be trained/updated. All Commission meetings. Attends Annual formation session for all lay ministers. Time Commitment: Attendance at liturgy and approximately 1½ hours following liturgy for distribution of Eucharist as a ministry participant. Frequency of ministry highly dependent on number of active participants. Average is two times per month as ministry participant. One hour for each new minister oriented if done individually. Qualifications Required: Practices the Catholic faith through regular attendance at liturgy and reception of the Sacraments. Has received the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. The Bishop, priest, and deacon are the ordinary ministers of the Eucharist. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are members of the lay faithful who are recommended by the Pastor and appointed by the Bishop to distribute the Body and Blood of Christ to a specific parish community for a period of three years. Liturgical Commission Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion to the Sick and Homebound Coordinator Task List General Tasks: Recruits new members Maintains member list and advises secretary of any changes to ministers records (phone number, email, address). Conducts training sessions during the course of the year in coordination with the Director of Liturgy and the Liturgical Commission. o Ensures training dates and times are on the parish calendar. Completes Facility Reservation Form (FRF) for dates when utilizing the De Sales Faith Formation Center or the church facilities. Contacts Business Manager to fill out Facility Access/Magnetic Lock Keycard Record & Agreement for assignment of Access keycard when utilizing the De Sales Faith Formation Center or the church facilities. Reviews and updates ministry guidelines yearly. Performs regular ministry duties in accordance with the Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion Guidelines. Participates in Commissions/Stewardship Fairs. o Updates Story Board for Commissions/Stewardship Fair. o Recruits members of ministry for implementing Commissions/Stewardship Fair. Ministry Purpose / Objective: To distribute Holy Eucharist and extend prayerful concern to sick and homebound and those in assisted care facilities following weekend liturgies. General Responsibilities of All Ministry Members: Discerns God s message in one s own life regarding stewardship of Time, Talent and Treasure. Is familiar with ministry guidelines and General Parish Procedures. Presents ministry in a positive light at all times. Responsibilities of Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion to the Sick and Homebound Members: Arrives at liturgy at least 15 minutes early to sign into the ministry sign-in book. Is present at closing of liturgy for blessing and sending ritual. Is familiar with ministry guidelines, especially established visitation routine. Maintain active communication with coordinator for updates, direction of program and scheduling Contacts family day prior to visit to inform of mass schedule, arrival time, and confirmation they still want visit. Special Activities: Attends training sessions directed by the Coordinator. Attends refresher training at discretion of coordinator. Time Commitment: Attendance at liturgy and approximately one and one half hours following liturgy for distribution of Eucharist. Expected Length of Commitment: In the Diocese of Raleigh, commissioning is for five years, with an option of renewal for an additional five years upon approval by the pastor. After an EMHC has served for two terms (10 years), the pastor may approve extension of the term for pastoral reasons. After serving for two terms in a row, each minister is expected to take a year off before continuing another term, again upon approval of the pastor. Recommissioned on anniversary date with your consent. The Bishop, priest, and deacon are the ordinary ministers of the Eucharist.
