Salem Lutheran Church P O B O X 1 2 8 H I T T E R D A L, M N 5 6 5 5 2 2 1 8-962- 3 2 1 3 J U L Y 2 0 1 6 Dear Friends, A Note From Pastor Ruth As we enter into the heat of the summer, we can often think that life at church slows down or even stops during the summer; we can think that the summer is a lull in the church year, where attendance is down and where ministries are sort of on hold until the fall and school year begin again. But I would argue that just as much ministry, if not more ministry, happens during the summer months for it is the summer months in which we are able, much more, to be out and about in the community and to share time with both friends and strangers alike. For it is more often in the small moments and in the small gestures that ministry happens. In fact, I was reminded of the fact that ministry happens in the small acts of service as I was walking through the corridors of Olivet Lutheran in Fargo, on my way to a pastors bible study group. As I was on my way to the group, I saw on the wall a bulletin board with bees and flowers, and the question at the top was, How can I grow through service? Suggestions that were listed were to walk a dog for a neighbor, to volunteer to cut someone s lawn, to water plants while a neighbor was away, to carry in groceries for an elderly neighbor or relative, and other such service activities in the same vein. Now based on the way this bulletin board was presented, it was pretty obvious that its message was geared towards the children of the congregation, but I do not think that its question is purely child-like in nature. So my question for you this month is, where do you see ministry through service, even in the smallest ways around you? Where do you see yourself serving the neighbor, the stranger, and/or the family member? How do you see the Holy Spirit moving in those moments? Are there anyways that you can see these actions growing to include the whole community or even the community at Salem? Let s think together on this, and let us share these moments together. Let us focus on the good, even in the midst of things happening in this world around us, and let us praise our God for his loving hand and presence in our lives. May you always know the presence of God surrounding you. Blessings, Pastor Ruth 1
