November, 2007 Sedona Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America Tire Tracks THE VOICE OF THE SEDONA CAR CLUB PUTTING DEAD TREES TO GOOD USE BREAKING NEWS President s Vehicle N ovember is here! Election month. Thanks to the efforts of Vince Monaci and Bob Boydston we have a full slate of candidates for officers for 2008. There is a list of the new candidates elsewhere in this issue, so I will not be redundant and name them here. Some of our current Officers will return to their jobs and there will be some new faces on the Executive Board. I am confident that all of the people who have agreed to help run our Club next year will do excellent jobs and provide us with an entertaining year. I want to thank each of the future officers for agreeing to lead the club. I wish them the best. Lee Niederkorn sent me an email recently suggesting that I check out a website that has photos of cars from the 50 s and 60 s with cute captions and cool music from that era. If you want some nostalgic entertainment, check out the following website - http://oldfortyfives.com/carswedrove. I think you ll enjoy it. I need to discuss a letter I received from the Sedona Community Center, our meeting place lessor. They claim that several times in the past our members have expected to use the room before our contracted time, 6:30PM, and that they will not let us New SCC Executive Board To Assume Power in January! Tire Tracks names names in this issue! enter until 6:30 in the future. I just want to remind all members that we are not supposed to access the room until 6:30PM. Thanks for your cooperation. In a few weeks it will be Thanksgiving Day, one special day when we will all give thanks for our family, our friends, for living in this wonderful country and especially in this beautiful part of our state, and for all of the blessings that (I hope) we all enjoy. I wish everyone of our club members a Happy Thanksgiving Day. VISIT US AT: WWW.SEDONACARCLUB.COM October 31, 2007 A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America Throughout our history, America has been protected by patriots who cherished liberty and made great sacrifices to advance the cause of freedom. The brave members of the United States Armed Forces have answered the call to serve our Nation, ready to give all for their country. On Veterans Day, we honor these extraordinary Americans for their service and sacrifice, and we pay tribute to the legacy of freedom and peace that they have given our great Nation. In times of war and of peace, our men and women in uniform stepped forward to defend their fellow citizens and the country they love. They shouldered great responsibility and lived up to the highest standards of duty and honor. Our veterans held fast against determined and ruthless enemies and helped save the world from tyranny and terror. They ensured that America remained what our founders meant her to be: a light to the nations, spreading the good news of human freedom to the darkest corners of the earth. Like the heroes before them, today a new generation of men and women are fighting for freedom around the globe. Their determination, courage, and sacrifice are laying the foundation for a more secure and peaceful world. Veterans Day is dedicated to the extraordinary Americans who protected our freedom in years past, and to those who protect it today. They represent the very best of our Nation. Every Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine, and Coast Guardsman has earned the lasting gratitude of the American people, and their service and sacrifice will be remembered forever. In the words of Abraham Lincoln: "... let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the Nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle...." On this Veterans Day, I ask all Americans to express their appreciation to our Nation's veterans. With respect for and in recognition of the contributions our service men and women have made to the cause of peace and freedom around the world, the Congress has provided (5 U.S.C. 6103(a)) that November 11 of each year shall be set aside as a legal public holiday to honor our Nation's veterans. NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim November 11, 2007, as Veterans Day and urge all Americans to observe November 11 through November 17, 2007, as National Veterans Awareness Week. I encourage all Americans to recognize the valor and sacrifice of our veterans through ceremonies and prayers. I call upon Federal, State, and local officials to display the flag of the United States and to support and participate in patriotic activities in their communities. I invite civic and fraternal organizations, places of worship, schools, businesses, unions, and the media to support this national observance with commemorative expressions and programs. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirtyfirst day of October, in the year of our Lord two thousand seven, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-second. Medical News You Can Use STROKE IDENTIFICATION: During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics)...she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 pm Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die... they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead. It only takes a minute to read this... A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke... totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough. RECOGNIZING A STROKE Thank God for the sense to remember the "3" steps, STR. Read and Learn! Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions: S * Ask the individual to SMILE. T * Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SEN- TENCE(Coherently) (I.e. It is sunny out today) R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS. If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 911 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. to the dispatcher. Courtesy - Gail Bangiola

Thanksgiving George Washington proclaimed a National Day of Thanksgiving in 1789. However, it was Sarah Josepha Hale, a magazine editor, whose efforts eventually led to what we recognize as Thanksgiving. Hale wrote many editorials championing her cause in her Boston Ladies' Magazine, and later, in Godey's Lady's Book. Finally, after a 40-year campaign of writing editorials and letters to governors and presidents, Hale's obsession became a reality when, in 1863, President Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November as a national day of Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving was proclaimed by every president after Lincoln. In 1941, Thanksgiving was finally sanctioned by Congress as a legal holiday, as the fourth Thursday in November.
