The Wickie Friends of Concord Point Lighthouse, Inc. Fall 2016 President s Letter Summer Internships As the season comes to an end and looking back, our volunteers have been busy. See more about that in the rest of this issue of the Wickie. Yes, the heat and rain have created problems. For our gardens and flowers, it has been long dry spells or heavy rains. And for volunteers and visitors, the heat of several days kept people out of the weather. On the good side, the Gift Shop s bottled water sales have been very good. Moving ahead as our visitor season comes to an end, various activities are necessary to put the Light Station to sleep for the winter months. The rose gardens need a good pruning, various shrubs need to be trimmed. The porches, steps and handrails need painting. During the season, each Tuesday morning at 9am, volunteers will be engaged in these tasks. We would love to see you then! -Floyd Dobson, President Many of you have probably met Kara Nieberlein who has been working weekends all summer at the tower and gift shop. She is our social media manager and has kept all of our followers up to date on events and happenings throughout the year. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram to see our posts! Remember to tag photos to #concordpointlighthouse Thank you Kara for all of your work this summer! Emmie Michalkiewicz has been working diligently on re-bagging and archiving part of our collection of materials found on the grounds of the Keeper s House during restoration think dozens of pot sherds and ceramic pieces. Thank you to Emmie for tackling this project and for your perseverance!

Recent Events at the Lighthouse HdG Independence Day Parade Ironbirds Fundraiser Once again, we participated in the annual Independence Day Parade. Thank you to our volunteers Beth Fleming, Lilma Huntley, Helen Cayer, Bonnie Vaughn, Jason and Jessica Lapota and Mike Baker! We placed 3 rd in the Senior Organization category this year. Congrats to Steppingstone Farm Museum for taking 1 st place! Fish, Fowl and Folk Festival Thank you to everyone who joined us on Friday, August 5 th at the Ironbirds Game! This is the second year we have attended for National Lighthouse Day and it was a fun night even if the Ironbirds lost! If you didn t go this year, we ll see you next year! (Board member Jessica Lapota and husband Jason pictured) National Lighthouse Day Thank you to the volunteers who worked on this hot, humid Saturday! Even with the threat of rain, the Festival was great and we are looking forward to next year! (Intern/Face painter Emmie Michalkiewicz and Catherine Tirschman pictured) National Lighthouse Day was a great day celebrating America s Beacons! We had a line at the tower all day and many young artists designed their version of the tower. Our Pat s Pizza fundraiser went well, with many familiar faces at Pat s supporting our mission to preserve and maintain the Light Station. Thank you to Pat s Pizza for your support! THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR NEW AND RENEWING MEMBERS AND DONORS! We could not keep the light shining without you!

In Memorium Mary Irene Rice, formerly of Havre de Grace, MD, passed away on August 21, 2016. She was 93. She was born in Aberdeen, Maryland to the late Robert Lewis Powell and Mary Rebecca Carter Powell (nee Baker). She was the mother of the late Thomas James Abbott, grandmother of Thomas Abbott Jr., and his companion Joanie McCoy of Delta, PA, and Mary Becky Capute and her husband Russell, of Havre de Grace, MD, and great-grandmother of Lilly Capute. She was the dear sister of the late George E. Powell, Robert Lewis Powell, Margaret J. Leppert, and Barbara Joyce Ford. Mrs. Rice was a Life Member of American Legion Post 47 Ladies Auxiliary, and the Friends of Concord Point Lighthouse. She worked at Aberdeen Proving Ground for several years before retiring. She enjoyed arts and crafts, and enjoyed painting and decorating eggs, and making lighthouses and doll houses. She loved traveling all over the United States. A viewing will be held on Thursday, August 25, 2016, from 5-7 PM, at Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., 123 S. Washington Street, Havre de Grace, MD. Funeral services will begin at 7:00 PM. Pastor Sarah Elliott will officiate. Contributions may be made in her memory to Friends of the Concord Point Lighthouse, P. O. Box 212, Havre de Grace, MD 21078. Online condolences may be made at www.zellmanfuneralhome.com. Lighthouse Keeper s Mascot Program Our pets are family members too and we are offering the opportunity for them to become a part of the Concord Point Lighthouse family! All animals are welcome and will receive an official certificate honoring their title as Concord Point Mascot. Memberships are $5.00 annually. These memberships will be available to purchase at our Howl-O-Ween Tails and Treats Pet Fest on October 30th or by calling us today. Mascots will be featured in our upcoming newsletters. Pets are Keepers too! #FlashBackFriday Postcard from 1909 - look at that fence! The Lighthouse was well-kept then by Captain Henry E. O Neill, the last official lightkeeper. The Lighthouse was automated a few years later and the Keeper s House was sold to private interests. The rest is history
