The Witness The writer, John, may be referring to himself. John could also be distinguishing between himself as the writer and a second witness. John could also be calling God to witness. Most likely this witness is John because of the parallel found in John 21:24.
John 21:24 (ESV) 24 This is the disciple who is bearing witness about these things, and who has written these things, and we know that his testimony is true.
Blood and Water What does this blood and water mean? It could signify the two sacraments of blood (the Lord s Table) and water (Baptism). As Eve came from the side of Adam, so the Church comes from the side of Christ, the second Adam. Some believe this to be medical evidence of a broken heart, the cause of Jesus death.
