September 7-13, 2013 MAMBALAM TIMES Page 5 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 66 Another film featuring M. R. Krishnamurthy directed by the famed American Tamil filmmaker Ellis R. Dungan was Seemanthani (1936). This was a folklore movie in which the heroine was the first star of Tamil cinema, T. P. Rajalakshmi. During her day she was very popular and, besides being a top actress, she was also a producer, screenwriter and director. Indeed she was one of the early female directors of Indian Cinema. With Krishnamurthy and Rajalakshmi in the cast, the film had expectedly melodious music. However the film was not as much a success as expected. As the 1930s rolled over the horizon, Krishnamurthy acted in now-forgotten firms like Pandurangan (1939) and Maya Machindra (1939). In the former, T. A. Mathuram, who was already established as a comedienne and married to N. S. Krishnan, played the heroine, her only such role in cinema. During that period she was temporarily away from her husband for many a reason and the failure of this film proved that she was no heroine material. By then she had reconciled with her husband and went back to him to conquer new peaks of success in comedy together. In the 1940s Krishnamurthy continued to be active but none of his films made a mark nor were successful at the box-office. Slowly he began to move away and almost retired from cinema due to failing health. He passed away during the late 1940s. Like most movie stars he led a happy-go-lucky life tasting the aromatic liquors of stardom to the brim and more. Krishnamurthy is. hardly remembered today except by oldtimers who think of him more as a brother of the legend of Carnatic music, Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer. His biggest success was of course Bhama Vijayam which is still remembered by lovers of vintage movies. Sadly no copy of this movie exists. CHITTOOR V. NAGAIAH Balaa pasupu kumkuma, Aada brathukey madhuram ( Sumangali, Telugu, 1940), Ennalundina ikasukamulalo, Raavey raaavey bangaru paapaa ( Devatha, Telugu, 1941), Oooo ohohohoho paavuramaa ( Swargaseema, Telugu, 1945), Vadhalajaalaaraa, Andhalu chindheyte naa Jyotheee ( Yogi Vemana, Telugu, 1947), Vidhiyin vilaivaal anaadhai ), Kanivudan thirumbhiye paarum, Bhum chicka bhum ( Ezhai Padum Paadu, Tamil, 1950). All the above are some of the songs which were popular hits of Tamil and Telugu Cinema of 1940-1950s. Some of them are evergreen in public memory and still being hummed by many to this day. What do they have in common? All the songs were composed by the multi-faceted personality of South Indian Cinema, Chittoor V. Nagaiah. And many of them he sang himself besides composing. Brilliant actor, talented music composer, trained musician and singer, filmmaker and above all a highly cultured wonderful man with the milk of human kindness filled to the brim in his heart. That was Nagaiah, one of the greatest character actors that Indian Cinema has seen since it began to speak in 1931. The stormy petrel of Indian film journalism, Baburao Patel, the editor of the leading magazine of yesteryears, Filmindia described him as the Paul Muni of India. He received training in Classical Carnatic music under legendary figures like Musiri Subramania Iyer and G. N. Balasubramaniam. His life was one of various vicissitudes, and adversity was his constant companion. Yet he fought a valiant battle winning laurels and lollipops. Some of the characters he created on screen during his long innings have achieved immortality and are still talked about to this day reverentially as models of perfect screen acting - Pothana, Thyagaia, Yogi Vemana and others. Such a performing artiste was Nagaiah. Vuppalajadiyam Nagaiah, popularly known as Chittoor V. Nagaiah, was born in a Telugu-speaking Brahmin family in Repalle, the heartland of Andhra in 1904. Due to many mishaps in the family he was taken away to,chittoor by his uncle where he studied with zeal and took his B. A degree. Blessed with good looks he also had a melodious voice and an inborn talent for music and theater. Page 8 MAMBALAM TIMES September 7-13, 2013 15-foot-tall Vinayagar idol to be displayed on Venkatanarayana Road CMYK Vinayaka Chathuruthi Vizha Kuzhu has made a 15-foot tall Lord Vinayagar idol with some organic base materials, 500 kg of dry coconut (kopparai), manjal and kungumam for Vinayaga Chathurthi falling on Monday, Sept. 9. The idol which will be kept on the pavement outside JYM Kalyana Mandapam (Venkatanarayana Road, T. Nagar) will be unveiled for darshan at 6.30 p.m on Sunday, Sept. 8. Kutti Ganesan (Founder) told Mambalam Times that the idol weighs close to a ton. Special poojas will be performed to the idol from Sept. 9 to 15. Annadhanam will take place at noon on Friday, Sept.13. The idol will be taken for immersion in the sea near Marina beach at 10.30 a.m on Sunday, Sept. 15. He said that the Kuzhu has been making huge Vinayagar idols since 1991. The tallest was a 40-foot idol made with plaster-of-paris in 1995. It had to reduce the height in subsequent years owing to construction of flyovers and subways which posed an obstacle during procession for immersion in sea. Ganesan said that following directions from Maha Periyavaa, idols are only being made with organic materials which will not harm but become a fodder to the marine life after immersion. Kutti Ganesan (Founder, General Secretary) told Mambalam Times that idol will be unveiled for public darshan at 6.30 p.m on Sunday, Sept. 8. There will be special program from Sept. 9 to 15. Annadhanam will be at noon on Friday, Sept. 13. He said in the past they have made idols made with Bermuda grass (arungampul), coconut, fruits, vegetables, herbs, paddy, grains (navadanyam), kozhukattai, jaggery and dates. Those who wish to join the Kuzhu may contact Ganesan in 98847 38184. Edited & Published by K.S. Ramakrishnan. Office: 7/3, Madley Road, T. Nagar, Chennai 17. Ph: 2434 9236, 2431 39 37.
