Dear Parishioners, This Monday, July 16, we celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. According to Catholic tradition, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Simon Stock at Cambridge, England on Sunday, July 16, 1251. Simon was a man of great holiness and devotion, who always in his prayers asked the Virgin to favor his order, the Carmelites, with some singular privilege. She appeared to him with a scapular in her hand and said, Take, beloved son, this scapular of thy order as a badge of my confraternity and for thee and all Carmelites, a special sign of grace. Whoever dies in this garment, will not suffer everlasting fire. It is the sign of salvation, a safeguard in danger, a pledge of peace and the covenant. She continued, Wear the scapular devoutly and perseveringly. It is my garment. To be clothed in it means you are continually thinking of me and I, in turn, am always thinking of you and helping you to secure eternal life. The brown scapular carries with it the promise never to die without the opportunity to confess or otherwise achieve forgiveness of sins. To wear the scapular is a sign of one s special relationship with Mary who we pledge to imitate in building a world of justice and peace. Pope John Paul II wore the brown scapular from the time he was a young man. When he was shot and operated on in 1981, he told the doctors not to remove the brown scapular that he was wearing. You can read more and order a scapular online at: www. freebrownscapular.com. In the past, I ve asked for a weekly collection of $15,000 to pay our expenses without the need for a Grand Annual Collection. You have been generous in meeting that goal. Looking at this year s budget with an increase in expenses, we will need a $500 increase each week to $15,500 to meet our expenses. Thank you in advance for supporting the needs of St. Joseph Parish. Without you we could not provide our many parish programs. I will be available for confession this week on Monday, July 16, from 6:30 p.m. 7:00 p.m. May Jesus continue to shepherd you in all of your needs. God love you, 2

Reflection of the Week Every day you have a choice to make: either try to struggle through your day all on your own or trust God to help you. HOLY HOUR A time of quiet music & reflection Sunday 7:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. PRAYER GROUP Hour of praise and charismatic prayer Monday 7:30-8:30 p.m. BIBLE STUDY Scripture Reading & Discussion Tuesday 7:30 p.m. HEALING SOAKING PRAYER Come meet us to pray for healing Wednesday 6:30 p.m. Thursday 2:00 p.m. Spiritual Teaching Behold, the Acceptable Time I want to speak to you about gratitude to God. Consider, dearly beloved, the fact that God loved you first. You ve heard this, but somehow it hasn t penetrated. If it had, you would be gratefully and passionately loving Him back. Yet there are few signs of it! Such love of God should be reflected immediately in your love of one another. How many of us truly and constantly realize the bounty of God to us, just speaking in the natural order? Do we thank God for the medical care we receive, for our clothing, our food and our holidays? I received a letter from a woman, the mother of many children, who had broken her arm. She wrote, Only now do I realize what it is to have two hands, both of which I need so much. We walk; we have the use of our limbs, eyes, speech, hearing. Are we grateful to God for these? Or do we take everything for granted, and grumble and mumble and complain and feel sorry for ourselves? I fear with great fear when I see a lack of gratitude. Think about it, meditate about it, pray about it, do something about it! Ours are frightening times and God is so good to us. Do we realize what we have? It is time we should. The time is now! ~ Catherine de Hueck Doherty, The Magnificat 3

After the service, his cousin asked him, How many women can a man marry? Sixteen, the boy responded. His cousin was amazed that he had an answer so quickly. Wow! How did you know that? Easy, the boy said. All you have to do is add it up, like the priest said: 4 better, 4 worse, 4 richer, 4 poorer. 6
