Dorchester Presbyterian Church HIGHLIGHTS Sunday Worship 10:15 A.M. Sunday School 9:00 A.M. THE GREEN TEAM PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN The Green Team is offering our second workshop on March 18 at 10:30am, entitled Garden Soil Preparation, LASAGNA Style! Master Gardener, Judy Berry is leading this workshop. The LASAGNA method utilizes cardboard, compost, soil and shredded paper, layered like a lasagna. An added bonus to this method is a reduction in the amount of garden weeds, as opposed to other methods. To accomplish our workshop, we need A LOT of compost, so we are asking that you collect your vegetable, fruit, coffee grounds and egg shells (NO MEAT) in plastic shopping bags and freeze them for us. We will have a bin in the vestibule to collect compost donations each Sunday. If you have a special gift or talent that you can offer to the Green Team, or if you have an idea for a workshop, send Andi an email at: andistem@dorchesterpres.org. The Good News March 2017 Page 2 Presbyterian Women Dorchester Presbyterian Women will be hosting the Annual Spring Gathering for Charleston-Atlantic Presbytery of Presbyterian Women on Saturday, April 8, 2017. This is our first time, and we will need all of the help and participation of the congregation, especially the women. Even if you don't attend PW meetings, all females of Dorchester are Presbyterian Women. If you would like to help, participate, or attend, contact Candy King. The day begins at 9AM for participants with registration followed by a finger-food breakfast in the fellowship hall. Following that, there will be a worship service in the sanctuary followed by a business meeting. The conclusion is a lunch in the fellowship hall. If you would like to attend, you must be pre-registered by March 24th, and the cost is $12 which pays for lunch, speakers, music, and materials. We have ordered blue DORCHESTER FISH T-Shirts which DPC women will be wearing. Candy will make a second order of T-shirts by March 1st. We can get children's sizes thru adult XXXL. Good Shepherd School GSS was feeling the love in February with the outpouring of donated books, toys, and a microwave. THANK-YOU SO MUCH! The kids enjoyed Valentine's Day parties in their classrooms, with lots of goodies to share. Dr. Seuss Week begins February 27, and we will celebrate each day with a theme. For example, Tuesday will be Cat in the Hat Day and we will all wear a crazy hat, and on Thursday we will eat Green Eggs and Ham. On March 17, we will be holding St. Jude's Trike-a-Thon to raise money for St. Jude's Research. The kids will ride their little bikes around the school! If you'd like to know how you can support this event, you can visit http://fundraising.stjude.org/gss

Page 3 The Good News March 2017 Greetings to my DPC Family! With the Lent season beginning, we have much to think about in the anticipation of Christ s empty tomb in 40 days. Lent has been traditionally a time of giving up something in our lives that will help us remember this season. I am trying a Whole30 food challenge that is supposed to be healthier eating with less sweets (not happy about) and lots of meat and vegetable (this I am ok with). But is also means I die a little bit to some old ways of thinking and of doing, so that a new me may emerge. Fortunately, I have some other folks also taking this challenge with me so that we can support each other in maintaining accountability. That s one of things I love most about DPC, is that we are great family and we do hold each other accountable for the direction we want to go in as a church and as Christ s followers. This month is extra special in maintaining accountability to missions and to Christ in that on March 12, we will participate in the Giving Wall directly after church. It s a way to raise over $5000 dollars through envelopes numbered 0-100, with each envelope coming back with the same amount of money as the number on it. Pick your luck number; pick several, but please choose! We have always done a great job of this in the past and with Haiti this summer, there are even bigger overall goals. We are also taking requests for Rent A Youth where the youth can participate in raising money via service. Please contact me if you re interested. On Sunday, April 30, the Haiti Mission Team will host a silent auction and dinner where there will be lots of local items, trips, and services available for bid. Dinner plates and to-go plates will also be available. The participants will be asking for donations and selling tickets to come, so be looking for those requests in the not so distant future. As always, thank you so much for being a part of DPC and making this the wonderful, Godserving place that it is. Peace of Christ, Saye

Page 4 The Good News March 2017 Highlights from February's Meeting of Session Under the Clerk s Report: The service of ordination and installation for the Ruling Elder-elect, Justin Dean, was held during the worship service on January 29, 2017. Annual information has been submitted to the Presbytery. Under Committee Reports: For the Deacons, Jeff reported the Deacons will be meeting on January 29. Deacons have been assigned to their Shepherding Teams. For the Youth, 10 DPC youth and 1 DPC adult along with 2 adults/1 youth from First Scot traveled to the High School Bethelwoods Retreat on February 10-12. 2 additional DPC youth and Saye helped lead the event that was a lot of fun for everyone! Rent-A- Youth projects have begun! The Finance Committee shared that an audit team will be formed to conduct the Annual Church Audit. The Technology Committee shared that the new website has been launched! Small changes are still being made, but please visit the site at www.dorchesterpresbyterian.org The Fellowship Team shared that the 3 rd Annual Scavenger Hunt had 35+ people in attendance and hunting around Summerville! Many teams competed and were very creative in their findings, but one team did come out on top. Team #2 with Jennifer Chadwell, Nolan Chadwell, Pam Brice, Nate Pryor and Brayden Gregory congratulations to them! Oyster Roast was also a success with many people shucking and jiving to live music and games of Gaga ball and football for all! The Personnel Committee has worked hard to streamline the Personnel Handbook along with the GSS Handbook. The Worship Committee is still seeking a Greeter Coordinator, maybe that s you?? Pancakes and more will be ready for everyone on Tuesday, February 28 th from 5:30 7:00 to celebrate Shrove Tuesday. Ash Wednesday service will be on Wednesday, March 1 at 7:00 pm. The Presbyterian Women are getting ready for their Annual Game Night on Sunday, 7/26/17 with the Youth Group! In recognition of Rainey Bernhardt s dedication and contributions to the GSS, PW presented her with a temporary plaque saying the school s new library/resource center will be called: The Good Shepherd School - Rainey Bernhardt Resource Center. Once the center is finished, PW will pay for a permanent sign and help to provide books & or other items. Preparation is still underway for the Presbytery-wide PW Spring Gathering in April to be hosted for the first time at DPC for about 140 people. Under New Business For the 2 nd half of the meeting, Jeff led the Session through scripture reading and Bible Study. Continuing Education for the Session! Blessings to all! Jocelyn Pryor, Clerk of Session

Page 5 The Good News The Green Team, in coordination with the Christian Education committee, is offering three days of FUN IN THE SON to the children of Dorchester Presbyterian, the Good Shepherd children, and the children of the community. Mark your calendars for June 15 th, July 20 th and August 17 th, (likely from 8:30-11:30) for an opportunity to learn about our Earth, our resources and how we can best share them! We will have crafts, special guests and funfilled activities. If you would like to join the planning team, let Andi know. We need adults and youth willing to laugh, play and share the love of Christ. Even if you can only assist on one of the dates, WE NEED YOU! Don t miss out on the FUN! March Birthdays Happy Birthday From your church family!
