Devotion NT229 CHILDREN S DEVOTIONS FOR THE WEEK OF: LESSON TITLE: The Healing of the Centurion s Servant THEME: Jesus has absolute authority. SCRIPTURE: Luke 7:1-10

Dear Parents Welcome to Bible Time for Kids! Bible Time for Kids is a series of daily devotions for children and their families. Our purpose is to supplement our Sunday morning curriculum and give you an opportunity to encourage your children to develop a daily devotional life. We hope you and your family will be blessed as you study God s Word together. This week in Children s Church we learned about the time that Jesus healed the Centurion s servant. This was a really exciting story. The Centurion had such faith in Jesus that he knew that Jesus only had to give the command and his son would be made well. Jesus was amazed at his great faith. We learned that Jesus has absolute authority over everything. If Jesus commands something to be, then it will happen. Sometimes we can be afraid. What we will learn this week is that when we trust in Jesus, we don t have to be afraid. We will look at some stories over the next few days about trusting in Jesus who has absolute authority. All authority in heaven and earth has been given to Jesus. What a blessing it is to know that He loves us and wants to help us. The section of scripture that we studied was Luke 7:1-10. The following five devotions are based on either the scripture and/or the theme for Sunday s lesson. As a starting point it would be good for you to review these verses with your children. These devotions are designed to help you reinforce Sunday s lesson throughout the week with your children, provide some more ideas for the application of God s Word in your children s lives and provide a tool to help in family devotions. Obviously children at various age levels will respond to the devotional in different ways. You may want to add your own ideas to these to make them more age appropriate. May the Lord bless you as you study His Word together!

Day One The Wind and The Sea Obey Him! Text: Mark 4:39 - Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Peace, be still! And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. Also read Mark 4:35-41 Peter was scared! He had never been this frightened in his entire life. He and his friends decided they would get in the boat and cross the water earlier that day, but the sun had been shining and the water was calm and smooth when they left. Jesus was sleeping inside of the boat. He had just healed and helped many people that day and needed to rest. Then the wind came up suddenly, as it often did on the Sea of Galilee. Peter knew about the storms because he was a fisherman and had been on these waters many times. But he had never seen such a storm as this. Even his friends who had fished with him before were frightened. Peter had ordered the sails trimmed and had followed all the rules he knew, but the storm only rocked the boat more fiercely, causing Peter and his friends to cry out in fear. They had forgotten all of the events of the days before, how that Jesus had healed people, fed thousands, and given hope to the hopeless. Peter took a deep breath to gather courage to wake the One who slept so peacefully while the lightening flashed and the thunder cracked deafening all of those in the boat. He gathered his friends and they went to where Jesus was resting, even as the boat threatened to roll over because a huge wave caught the vessel. It just about threw all but Jesus out into the raging water. Their knuckles were white and their hands cramped from hanging onto the ropes and the side of the boat, and they cried out Master, Master, we perish. Then He arose. He knew of their fear and struggle to survive while He slept. He knew their faith was in danger. He spoke majestically, yet forcefully to the wind and the sea and commanded Peace, be still! There were no other words needed. Jesus had authority to command the wind, the sea, illness, and even death. Jesus loves you very much. He will help you when you are afraid too! Does this story give an example of Jesus authority? How? Do you think the wind and sea would obey your command? Why is it important to know Jesus has authority? Kid s Bible Dictionary Authority: The power to give a command and have it obeyed.

Day Two No Fear! Text: Matthew 4:10 - Then Jesus said to him, Away with you, Satan! For it is written, You shall worship the LORD you God, and Him only you shall serve. Also read Matthew 4:1-10 Sandy was afraid of being alone sometimes. At night she would wait until her parents were sleeping, then she would get out of bed and run down the hall to her mom and dad s room and sleep in their room on the floor. One morning when Sandy s mom and dad woke up and saw that she was sleeping on the floor they decided to have a talk with her about her fear. They asked why she felt safer in their room. Sandy thought about it for a minute. She told her mom and dad she felt safer because she knew her parents were stronger than she was and could protect her. Sandy s dad asked her if she remembered that there was always someone with her, even when they were gone. He went on to explain to her that when she asked Jesus into her heart that Jesus would never leave or forsake her. Her mom said that Jesus has authority over everything. That means that He can give a command and it has to be obeyed. He even has the power to tell His enemy, Satan, what to do. She told Sandy the story about the time when Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness. The Bible tells us Jesus went to the wilderness and fasted forty days and nights. Then the devil came and tempted Him to eat, but Jesus told the devil that man would live by every word from the mouth of God. Then the devil tempted Jesus two more times, but Jesus kept coming back with God s word. After the third temptation He told the devil, Away with you Satan, for it is written, You shall worship the Lord, your God, and Him only shall you serve. The devil left Jesus after this command and angels came and ministered to Jesus. Jesus can command even our worst enemy. What a mighty Lord we have. There is no one like Jesus. When we are afraid, we can go to Jesus and tell Him about the things that we are afraid of. He loves us and wants to help us. We don t have to be afraid of anything. Have you ever been afraid? Did you know when you are afraid that you can trust Jesus? Does it help to know that Jesus has the authority to command our worst enemy? Kid s Bible Dictionary Minister: Someone who helps or serves another.

Day Three Love Your Neighbor Text: John 10:30 - I and My Father are one. Also read John 10:22-42 Joey came to church every now and then. His hair was always messy and his clothes did not always match, but he came and would do the lessons at class. Mike and Amy always watched for Joey to get in the church bus. Sometimes in class Joey would fall asleep when Mrs. Johnson, the teacher, talked. Amy told Mike that she knew the teacher saw Joey take an extra snack but didn t do anything. Throughout the day Mike and Amy would talk about Joey s hair and clothes being messy and make jokes behind his back. One day the teacher heard Mike and Amy talking about Joey. Mrs. Johnson listened to the two young Christians before she interrupted. Amy was talking about how Joey didn t wash his face that Sunday. Mrs. Johnson asked the two children to stay after class for a few minutes. After the other kids left, the teacher asked Amy and Mike if they had ever been over to Joey s house. Neither Mike nor Amy had. The teacher asked if they have ever talked to Joey. Both of the young Christians had never said anything to Joey. Mrs. Johnson asked if the two young friends would pray about visiting Joey at his house, and maybe see if his parents wanted to come to church. Mrs. Johnson reminded the two young friends that Jesus commands us to love God and to love our neighbors. We need to listen to what Jesus commands us. Jesus is God. So when He tells us that we need to love others, we need to make sure that we do that. Let s think about someone who is perhaps different from us, but still needs to be shown the love of Jesus. Let s make and effort to love them today. Do you know someone who needs your prayers and shown love to today? Is there a family member who does not know Jesus? What would you do the next time you saw Joey if you were Mike or Amy? Kid s Bible Dictionary Command: To give an instruction or rule.

Day Four Big Brother Text: John 13:35 - By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another. Also read John 13:21-35 Kevin and Justin were brothers. Kevin was younger than Justin and didn t like it when Justin would tell him what to do. Sometimes Kevin wondered how Justin got to be the older brother. He certainly didn t think Justin was smarter than him. One day Kevin and Justin were sent to the store by their mom. Kevin walked in front of his brother because he did not want anyone to think he was just a little kid. Kevin walked so fast he could not see his brother anymore. Some older boys began to follow Kevin and he became afraid and cried out for his brother. When he couldn t see Justin he panicked. Suddenly Justin was right beside his little brother and he told the older boys to stop following Kevin. Justin spoke with authority and the older boys listened. Kevin walked close to Justin the rest of the way to the store and all the way home. Kevin felt safe and protected beside his big brother. Sometimes we can be like Kevin. We think that we can handle things on our own without asking God for help. But we really can t. Like Kevin we need to walk close to Jesus all the time so we don t get into trouble. But if we do walk into something we really can t handle, we can call on Jesus and He will help us. Jesus has the authority and power to help us. Let s remember that we serve Jesus Christ. He has authority over everything. If we remain close to Him then we will be protected all of the time. But if we drift a way then we will have problems. The good news for Kevin was that Justin was right there to help him. Jesus is always right there to help us in our time of need. Let s remember to stay close to Jesus all of the time. Do you think Kevin will like being around his big brother now? Was it safe for Kevin to walk away from Justin? Do you walk close to Jesus? Kid Wisdom Jesus is a friend that sticks closer than a brother!

Day Five A Bike Ride Gone Bad! Text: Colossians 3:20 - Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord. Also read Ephesians 6:1-3 Chuck knew his parents didn t allow him to ride his bicycle without telling them first. One day Mike and Sam rode their bikes over and asked Chuck to go for a ride with them. Chuck decided he would go without asking his parents because his friends might laugh at him if he went and asked. When Chuck brought the bike back, he tried to park it exactly the way it was in the garage so his dad wouldn t notice that it had been gone. But as Chuck was getting ready to go inside, the bike fell over and hit their car. CRASH! It caused a scratch in the paint. The first thing Chuck thought of was what his mom told him one time, Your sins will find you out. All of the fun of the bike ride was gone. Chuck felt ashamed and he knew he was in BIG trouble. He thought riding the bike would make him happy but the whole adventure had turned into a big mess because Chuck had been disobedient to his parents. He was sorry he had been disobedient. Chuck learned that disobeying caused more sorrow than joy. The Bible is God s instruction book and tells us how to live a happy, joy-filled life. The Bible teaches that children should obey their parents (Ephesians 6:1-3). God cares very much about our lives. He is a loving God, who is just and fair. He allows us to choose to obey Him or choose to disobey Him (Acts 5:29). When we obey there is a life of blessing, but if we disobey Him our lives will be filled with sadness and pain. Let s choose to obey Him and have a great life! Have you ever done something you weren t supposed to because a friend told you to? What do you think Chuck should do next? Why do you think God gives us choices? Kid s Prayer Time This week we learned a lot about Jesus authority. Jesus has power over everything. When we pray, let s remember that in Jesus there is nothing that we have to be afraid of. Jesus loves us and we can trust Him for everything. God bless you this week.
