Did You Know? THE PRESBYTERIAN PIPELINE A MONTHLY PUBLICATION OF FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH - HENDERSON, TEXAS Volume 50 September, 2018 Issue Nine Lobster Bisque in a Paper Cup But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from ourselves. II Corinthians 4:7 FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH P. O. BOX 773 HENDERSON, TEXAS 75653-0773 I m a sucker for chunky lobster bisque. It s a pricey, hoity toity sort of dish, typically served in gourmet establishments, which means I don t enjoy it very often. The best I ve ever tasted was at The Harbor Gawker, a funky little takeout café on Vinalhaven, Maine, served in a large paper cup. The contrast was not lost on me. The humble container might have made the bisque taste all the better to a cheapskate like me that and the outstanding harbor view off the restaurant s back deck. When Paul describes us as earthen vessels in the verse above, he doesn t use the word for good china. He s talking about ordinary, everyday dishes. In effect, Paul is saying We re not vases from the Ming dynasty. We re the paper cups you find in aisle five at Walmart. Yet God has dumped God s jewelry box into the likes of us to make the contents shine all the more. After all, diamonds stand out better on a pile of dirt than in a pile of treasure. And this heaven-in-an-earthen-cup image has profound import for us. Whenever we think poorly of ourselves, it helps to remember that we are not only stardust as Carl Sagan famously said, we are dust that carries the priceless power of God. Conversely, whenever we think too highly of ourselves, it helps to recall that we are only a paper cup. Never forget that you have eternal value as God s beloved vessel. If you need a good cup of bisque to remind you, I ll meet you on Vinalhaven. Prayer: God, may I treasure you today as you treasure me. Amen Rev. Matthew Laney, Senior Minister of Asylum Hill Congregational Church, Hartford, Connecticut.

WORSHIP What fun when Rev. Shelley Wiley returned to our church to preach and visit this past month! The potluck luncheon following worship was great. Thanks to everyone who took part, even if you just showed up. It was so enjoyable. We have another reunion celebration on September 2nd when Rev. Jonathan Murray joins with us to bring God s Word to us and officiate the Lord s Supper. Another potluck luncheon is planned so that we can update everything in Jonathan s life as he now serves with his wife, Caressa, co-pastoring at Covenant Presbyterian Church in College Station, Texas. Rev. Kay Creer will join with us on Sept. 9th, Rev. David Reeder on Sept. 16th, and we will welcome the last two Sundays of September. Rev. Hornes lives currently in Palestine, Texas, but has served First Presbyterian Church, Athens, Texas until relocating. We are excited that she will be filling our pulpit on a fairly regular basis the next several months. Thanks to Choir Director/Organist/Pianist Joshua Allen and the choir for their continued additions to our service, and to our sound/lighting crew, liturgists, and last, but certainly not least, our ushers and bell ringers. Especially Steve, Travis and Kimber! We are so blessed with many who wish to help in some way. Plan now for a Hymn Sing on the 5th Sunday of the month (September 30th) at First Presbyterian Church, Longview, Texas. Joshua Allen (Piano Man) will continue to update us on plans! The Worship Team includes Kathy Porter, Jimmy Chapman, Jan Mims, Kelly Weaver, Margaret Hillin, Cindy Ratliff, and Chair, Lynn Tieken. Next meeting is planned to follow Worship on Sunday, September 9, 2018, and we invite you to join with us.

KROGER COMMUNITY REWARDS Hello church member! Shopping at Kroger helps us support our mission work, both locally and nationally. It is now time to go online and make sure you are still enrolled and participating in the Kroger Community Rewards Program. As you know, Kroger, the nation's largest grocery chain, gives back a percentage of money each year to any organization who applies. We have been a participating organization now for over ten years. In order for our church to receive a percentage back each quarter we need for you to follow these steps: 1. Go to www.krogercommunityrewards.com 2. If you are enrolling for the first time, create an account (write it down and keep it). 3. If you have an existing account, go to account login and enter your username and password (if you did not write it down in a secure place you can make another one). 4. Find Kroger Community Rewards tab (look under savings & rewards) 5. Go to: my account, and either your account summary will come up or you will have to create one if you are new to the site. 6. Under Kroger Community Rewards, our church will be listed if you have an existing account, if not, search : Henderson First Presbyterian Church. Our organization number is PL535. 7. You MUST have a Kroger card. 8. Shop at Kroger and know you are helping mission work! If these steps "look different" when you get into the site, just play with it. It is not hard to enroll or re-enroll. Each member is responsible for seeing to their own enrollment. If you need help, please don't hesitate to call upon a family member or church member to help you. Thank you so much! This small effort can help make a large difference! Shop Kroger and help others!!

Autumn Is In the Air After a long and hot summer, September brings us a look forward to fall. On Sunday, September 2 nd, the Fellowship Committee will once again co-host a potluck luncheon after service to give extra time with our visiting preacher, Jonathan Murray. Fellowship Committee will provide the entrée dish and invite other congregation members to bring their favorite potluck dish. It will be a tasty good time. Another reminder to Save the Date - Fellowship will also be working with the Outreach Committee on a new direction for our October neighborhood event. This year we are hosting a Fall Fellowship Reception for the neighborhood and other friends. Mark your calendar for Saturday, October 27, 2018 at the church. We ll have popcorn, caramel apples, apple cider and an abundance of Fellowship. Please plan to join us. In the meantime, remember that FELLOWSHIP MATTERS! We invite you to join us as often as you can. FPC Fellowship Team OUTREACH Our Outreach Committee again will lead our church in our annual neighborhood outreach event. We have come up with a creative way to keep this tradition alive and continue to share in fellowship with our church neighbors. This year, we are hosting an informal come-and-go Fall Reception in the Fellowship Hall and back yard on Saturday, October 27, from 2:00pm to 3:30pm. Mark your calendar to come and join in some Fall Fun of caramel apples, popcorn, cider and neighborhood fellowship. We also want to note another successful Youth Yates Park Project school supply event. Betty Jean Elder sends a BIG, BIG THANKS to our church for our continued support and participation of this important event. As you all know, Betty is the co-founder of Help the Youth Yates Park Project. She reports that this year this project helped to serve 697 children from families in need with new school supplies. Thanks to all for all you do, Bert Lowe, Outreach Chair FPC Mission Committee includes members of the Session in addition to congregational members of John Tieken, Jan Pennal and Jimmy Chapman. As a church, we are gracious, giving and generous with our time, energy and support. Reflective of this supportive nature, our upcoming special offering is Peace & Global. This special offering begin September 9, 2018. Look for the information in the narthex to help inform you and guild you in your giving decisions. Peace & Global September 9, 2018 through October 7, 2018 Blessed are Peacemakers. This special offering purposefully runs during the Season of Peace which ends on World Communion Sunday. This offering helps address the systems of injustice around the world. Our local church can retain 25% of that collected to put forward to address systems of injustice in our local area. If you have any questions or would like more information on any of these programs, please contact Claudia. Peace & Grace, Your Mission Committee Please join us in welcoming to our pulpit for the month of September: Sept. 2nd Sept. 9th Sept. 16th Sept. 23rd Sept. 30th Rev. Jonathan Murray Rev.
