Advent Lutheran Church Pastor Anita R. Warner Lee Tyler, Parish Associate 16870 Murphy Avenue, Morgan Hill (408) 779-3551 - Office www.advent-lutheran.org WELCOME Thank you for worshiping with us today. If you are visiting, please fill out a guest card and place it in the offering plate or in the basket in the entry area to help us welcome you. Please introduce yourself to others near you and to the pastor. We hope you can join us again soon. NURSERY CARE Nursery care for infants and toddlers is available in Berkland Fellowship Hall directly behind the entry area. Children are welcome and included at worship; feel free to walk with them in the back of the worship area if they become noisy or restless. COMMUNION Baptized persons who believe that through the bread and wine we receive Christ's body and blood for our forgiveness are invited to communion. The center ring of glasses contains white grape juice. Gluten free bread is available. PRAYER MINISTER Prayer ministers are available for individual prayer during communion and after the service at the front right corner area of the sanctuary. PRAYER CHAIN If you would like some of Advent s people to join you in prayer you may contact Jane Osumi at janeybugo@yahoo.com. You may also write a prayer request on the guest card and leave it in the offering plate or in the basket on welcome table in the gathering area. HEARING ASSISTANCE UNITS Hearing enhancement equipment is available in the sound booth in the back corner of the sanctuary.

Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost September 16, 2018 We greet you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Whoever you are and wherever you are in your journey of faith, you are welcome in this community celebrating God s Spirit in the world. God s grace meets us in the water and Word, and in the bread and wine. We are here to know the touch of God s forgiveness and love and to hear God s calling in our lives. Please introduce yourself to others here and to the pastor. We invite you to complete the Guest card in the pew rack and place it in the offering plate as a reminder of your presence with us in worship today. GATHERING Three weeks ago we heard John s gospel s version of Peter s confession of faith. This week we hear Mark s version, when Peter says, You are the Messiah. In John, the stumbling block is Jesus invitation to eat his flesh, given for the life of the world. In Mark too the scandal has to do with Jesus words about his own coming death, and here Peter himself stumbles over Jesus words. But Jesus is anointed (the meaning of messiah ) in Mark only on the way to the cross (14:3); so we are anointed in baptism with the sign of the cross. Prelude and Welcome Prelude from Cello Suite No. 3 in C Major, BWV 1009 J.S. Bach Yaniv Cohen, Viola Hymn God, Whose Almighty Word next page Greeting The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Prayer of the Day Let us pray. O God, through suffering and rejection you bring forth our salvation, and by the glory of the cross you transform our lives. Grant that for the sake of the gospel we may turn from the lure of evil, take up our cross, and follow your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Please be seated. 5

WORD Reading Isaiah 50: 4-9a printed on back The image of the servant of the Lord is one of the notable motifs in the book of Isaiah. Today s reading describes the mission of the servant, whom early Christians associated with Jesus. Like Jesus, the servant does not strike back at his detractors but trusts in God s steadfast love. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Psalm 116 The Name of God Gather 110 The Cantor sings the Refrain the first time alone, then the congregation repeats the Refrain with the Cantor; the Cantor sings the verses. Reading James 3:1-12 printed on back This text uses various images to illustrate how damaging and hurtful the way we speak to and about others can be. Not only are we to control our speech, but what we say and how we say it are to reflect our faith. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Children s Message Pastor Anita Please stand as you are able. God, angry words explode out of us. We do not think about what we say or how it will hurt people. We only think of our own anger and putting it all into words so everyone will know how angry and hurt we feel. Forgive us for the way we hurt others with our tongues. 6

We say things that are not quite true to make ourselves look good to others. We add to the truth, change the story just a little bit, even lie for our own good. Forgive us for the way we hurt others with our tongues. We also say things that are not quite true about others to make them look bad. We change the story just a little bit and even lie so we look better and they look worse. Forgive us for the way we hurt others with our tongues. We know lots of names that are meant to hurt and should never be said. We don t really intend to say them, but we do. We spit them out hoping they will embarrass and humiliate. Forgive us for the way we hurt others with our tongues. We promise we will never tell a secret. Then we do. It is just too good to keep to ourselves, so we break our promise and we tell. Forgive us for the way we hurt others with our tongues. We use our tongues to convince ourselves that all the wrong we have done and all the hurt we have caused are not really so bad. But we know in our hearts that they are. We have broken your Law. We have not loved you or others with our tongues or our lives. Forgive us for the way we hurt others with our tongues. Lord hear our prayers. Forgive us and guide us. May the words of our mouths then be acceptable in your sight. Amen. 7

Gospel Acclamation The Assembly and Cantor sing the acclamation together. Gospel Announcement The Holy Gospel according to Mark, the eighth chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. Gospel Mark 8:27-38 printed on back This story provides the turning point in Mark s gospel. Peter is the first human being in the narrative to acknowledge Jesus as the Messiah, but he cannot accept that as the Messiah Jesus will have to suffer. Moreover, Jesus issues a strong challenge to all by connecting discipleship and the cross. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. 8

Sermon Just Words Pastor Anita Warner Silence for reflection When the music begins, stand to sing the hymn of the day. Hymn of the Day I Will Sing a Song of Mercy Prayers of the Church Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. 9

MEAL Peace The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. You are invited to share a sign of God s peace with others. You may use these or similar words: Peace be with you. You may use the sign of a handshake, a hug, or a bow with palms together. Please allow those who prefer less contact to choose the level of touch. Offering Welcome! If you are visiting, please fill out a Guest card this morning on the welcome table in the narthex / gathering area and leave it in the basket, as a way to help us welcome you further and another way of offering yourself to God on this day. Offertory Amazing Grace Arr. Keith McCuthcen Amazing grace, how sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me. I once was lost but now am found, Was blind but now I see. 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear And grace my fears relieved. How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed. Through many dangers toils and snares I have already come. 'Tis grace has brought me safe thus far And grace will lead me home. When we've been there ten thousand years Bright shining as the sun, We've no less days to sing God's praise Than when we've first begun. DID YOU KNOW? From Your Stewardship Committee Intercambio Potluck Advent hosted our first Intercambio potluck yesterday and another scheduled for Saturday, October 20 th with a performance at noon and a potluck to follow at 1:00 P.M. The format of the Intercambio Potlucks is to speak for 30 minutes in Spanish and then for 30 minutes in English. If you don t know even a single word of Spanish, do not be afraid! You will learn at least one or two new words or phrases and get to share the company of delightful people you may not know yet, along with a shared meal. It s a time for relaxation, joy, fun, celebration of the new thing we are doing together, and new relationships. You may have already learned one new word intercambio. We will have some simple phrase sheets available for non- Spanish speakers to use as you like. The BCAC is a part of a larger vision of our church. We as a church want to contribute toward growing The Beloved Community in South County. What is The Beloved Community? We all benefit when we know, respect, help and delight in the people who are our neighbors and when our neighbors do so for us. We depend upon one another. Our lives are richer when we are amazed by our differences and can learn with one another and from one another. The vision of The Beloved Community comes to life when we live in this way. The Beloved Community overcomes isolation and fear with relationships of care, justice and creativity. This is God s vision for life on this earth. All who attend Saturday s potluck are invited to take the communion elements to the altar for recognition of your stewardship at Advent and to receive a blessing from Pastor Anita. Your Gifts and Participation Make a Difference. 25

Again this year Kyle Jones will put together a memorable musical program, and we will be sure to have activities that children enjoy as well. Plan to join us and bring one of your favorite fall dishes! Please RSVP to the church office by September 20. Our Core Values This is a safe place to be who you are. God s love accepts and invites each of us to bring all of ourselves: our thoughts, beliefs, questions, age, ethnicity, gender identity, abilities and disabilities, sexual orientation, cultures and life experiences. We find joy and purpose when multiple generations together are: -Experiencing the living presence of Christ as music and other creative arts bring the scriptures to life when we gather and worship. -Exploring the spiritual journey, rooted in the Lutheran perspective. -Engaging with our neighbors to support God s mission of grace, healing and abundant life for all. 29
