Welcome to Summer Worship at Zion! I LOVE TO TELL THE STORY Rediscovering God s Grace in the Old Testament Joel: God s Promised Spirit 1732 S. Main St. Aberdeen, SD 57401 605-225-6755 Email: zion@nvc.net Website: www.zionlutheranaberdeen.org August 26, 2018 9:30 am ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Rooted in Faith * Growing in Spirit * Reaching Out to Those in Need ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ INTRODUCTION This summer we are exploring the Old Testament stories of God s relationship with God s chosen people. Our scripture lessons for the summer begin with the early chapters of Genesis and move through the stories of Israel s early history, the exodus, the kings, and the prophets. The stories tell of hope and disappointment, suffering and redemption, love and forgiveness. In all these stories, we find God dealing with the complexities of human life. PRELUDE/GATHERING SONGS WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS GATHERING The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. GATHERING SONG/HYMN Lord, Teach Us How to Pray Aright ELW #745 CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS (please stand) In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. 1 Lord God, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us and deliver us from all evil. Open our eyes to see how we are broken and do not live in healthy relationship with you or with our neighbors. Guide our confession through the Holy Spirit, that we may return to you through the redemption we have in Jesus, God-with-us. Returning to our gracious Lord, let us confess our sins. Silence for reflection and confession. Merciful God, we confess that we do not and cannot live as you want us to live. We confess that we regularly participate in wrongdoing and do not live according to your justice. We are often proud and self-righteous, we oppress the lowly and marginalized, we do not fill the hungry or bind up the brokenhearted, we do not proclaim liberty to the captives, and we do not bring good news to the oppressed. Bring us out of the lion s den of our sin and clothe us with the garments of salvation, won for us through Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord. Our God is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love; and out of that love God sent Jesus Christ to die for us that we may be restored to life. Therefore, as the prophets proclaimed: God redeems you and restores you, God loves you and forgives you, God sees you and claims you! 2

GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. KYRIE Kyrie Eleison HYMN OF PRAISE For peace in the world, for the health of the Church, For the unity of all; For this holy house, for all who worship and praise, That we may live out your impassioned response To the hungry and the poor; That we may live out truth and justice and grace, For peace in our hearts, for peace in our homes, For friends and family; for life and for love, For our work and our play, For your spirit to guide, that you center our lives In the water and the word; that you nourish our souls With your body and blood, 3 4

PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Loving Lord, When we have strayed, you have called us to come home to you. Return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; rend your hearts and not your clothing. With all our hearts we return to you, and gratefully accept your gentle love, for the sake of the one whose spirit lives in us, Jesus Christ our loving savior. (please be seated) A TIME FOR CHILDREN WORD God speaks to us in Scripture reading, preaching, and song. (please be seated) SERMON Pastor Erin HYMN/SONG OF THE DAY The Power of Your Love Lord, I come to You, let my heart be changed, renewed, Flowing from the grace that I ve found in You. And Lord, I ve come to know the weaknesses I see In me will be stripped away, by the power of Your love. Hold me close, let Your love surround me. Bring me near, draw me to Your side. And as I wait, I ll rise up like the eagle And I will soar with You. Your spirit leads me on in the power of Your love. Lord, unveil my eyes, let me see You face to face, The knowledge of Your love as You live in me. Lord, renew my mind as Your will unfolds In my life, in living everyday in the power of Your love. Hold me close, let Your love surround me. Bring me near, draw me to Your side. And as I wait, I ll rise up like the eagle And I will soar with You. Your spirit leads me on in the power of Your love. The holy gospel according to Saint Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. Hold me close, let Your love surround me. Bring me near, draw me to Your side. And as I wait, I ll rise up like the eagle And I will soar with You. Your spirit leads me on in the power of Your love. 5 6

CREED (please stand) I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Open to the gifts of the Holy Spirit, let us pray for the church, the world, and all people according to their needs. After each petition: Lord, in your mercy Sung response: 7 Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through Jesus Christ, our Savior. (please be seated) OFFERING The children are welcome to come forward and place their offerings in the For Children Everywhere box. WORDS OF INSTITUTUION MEAL God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ. LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen (please be seated) 8

Come and live forever. come receive Christ the King. Come and live forever. Grace Like Rain Amazing grace, how sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me. I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see so clearly. And hallelujah, grace like rain falls down on me. And hallelujah, all my stains are washed away, they re washed away. Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved. How precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed. And hallelujah, grace like rain falls down on me. And hallelujah, all my stains are washed away, they re washed away. When we ve been there ten thousand years bright shining as the sun, We ve no less days to sing Your praise than when we first begun. 9 And hallelujah, grace like rain falls down on me. And hallelujah, all my stains are washed away, they re washed away. And hallelujah, grace like rain falls down on me. And hallelujah, all my stains are washed away, they re washed away. COMMUNION BLESSING (please stand) The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in his grace. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Merciful Father, your Son Jesus Christ offered up his body and blood, so that we might die to self and live in him. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. SENDING God blesses us and sends us in mission to the world. BENEDICTION Nothing in all creation will be able to separate you from the love that God has in Christ Jesus our Lord. I LOVE TO TELL THE STORY REDISCOVERING GOD S GRACE IN THE OLD TESTAMENT

FIRST READING Joel 2:12-13, 28-29 12 Yet even now, says the LORD, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; 13 rend your hearts and not your clothing. Return to the LORD, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and relents from punishing. 28 Then afterward I will pour out my spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. 29 Even on the male and female slaves, in those days, I will pour out my spirit. GOSPEL Luke 11:13 13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"
