3 Updae Lorain Couny Crisis By Krisen Dohery The more han 50 Duch rabbis a he house in Lorain Couny coninue o be a risk. We have found homes for many, bu because our adopion and educaion process is horough and ime-consuming, placing hese bunnies in good homes is slow. Since he Buckeye HRS coninues o rescue oher rabbis hroughou he sae, we are no able o ake he Lorain Couny rabbis ino our foser homes on a consisen basis. Nor are we able o ake in a large number of hese rabbis all a once. Despie his unforunae siuaion, here is a bi of good news. All of he rabbis are mainaining good healh as long as voluneers coninue o go ou o he home on a somewha regular basis (usually wice a monh). The work hese voluneers do goes a long way in prevening illness; keeping he cages clean and handling he bunnies o check for any signs of illness are key o prevening respiraory problems, malnuriion, and oher sympoms brough on by chronic neglec. As far as we can ell, here has been only one new lier since February of his year. Now ha Dr. Mandel is se up in his new clinic, he is able o coninue spaying and neuering hese bunnies unil every rabbi in he house is fixed. We are hoping o ge hese remaining bunnies spayed/neuered very soon. Unforunaely he residen is sill a risk of losing her home due o missed morgage paymens and he bank is on he verge of saring he foreclosure process. I anicipae a phone call any day, wih a dae by which he bunnies mus be evacuaed. If we canno find homes wihin 1 o 4 days, we will have o conac a sheler o plan for humane euhanasia of hose we canno ake ino foser care. If you are able o adop even one of hese swee bunnies, or can help wih any of he following, please conac Krisen Dohery by phone 440-543-4959. 5 Treaing and Prevening Sore Hocks By Krisi Cole Sore hocks (he echnical name is Ulceraive Pododermaiis ) is a condiion where he fur on he rabbi s hock, or heel, is worn down o he bare skin or, in severe cases, o he bone. Someimes he rabbi forms pale pink calluses and ges along jus fine. If your rabbi jus has calluses, keep a close eye on hem so hey do no become deep red, swollen or break open and scab over. You can also apply Vaseline or Calendula cream ino hese calluses every few days o keep he skin sof. This will help preven pain and irriaion, and will help keep he calluses from cracking open. Problems develop when he skin urns ino an open wound, so be sure o seek veerinary care immediaely if ha occurs. There are a variey of causes for sore hocks, including wire cage booms, flooring ha is oo hard, damp carpe mas and lier ha is no absorben (herefore consanly we agains he rabbi s fee). Overweigh and large-breed rabbis are paricularly prone o sore hocks, as are he Rex breeds, since hey have hin fur and no a lo of padding on heir fee. Also, older rabbis who have anoher ailmen ha causes hem o be less mobile ofen have sore hocks as a secondary problem. Lack of Whiney came ino HRS foser care wih a severe case of sore hocks. movemen, combined wih obesiy, causes pressure o increase on a small area of skin, resuling in sore hocks. Rabbis who are inconinen can develop sore hocks in addiion o he urine scald ha someimes occurs on he inner highs, due o consan weness. Toenails ha are no kep shor can cause oo much weigh o shif o he heel, adding oo much pressure o ha area, conribuing o hock problems. For severe cases wih scabs and abscessed infecion, your veerinarian will debride, flush and culure he wounds o clean ou he area and find he appropriae anibioic o rea he infecion. Ofen, daily flushing of he area will be required so he wound can heal from he inside ou. An ani-inflammaory medicaion may be prescribed o help ease pain and inflammaion in he fee. Someimes a liquid bandage barrier (such as arificial skin ) will be recommended and occasionally emporary bandaging will be necessary. If you need o bandage your rabbi s fee, he following link offers a sep-by-sep guide: hp://www.medirabbi.com/en/ Surgery/Bandaging/band_foo.hm In addiion o medical reamens, he environmen mus change o preven recurrence. If your rabbi is overweigh, cu back on pelles and reas o help him lose some weigh and ake some of he pressure off his fee. Enice him o exercise more by increasing his play area or changing is seup wih boxes and unnels for more advenure. If your rabbi is inconinen, you can modify he environmen by puing down a layer of hick, absorben owels, hen a layer of sof, arificial fleece on op. When he rabbi urinaes, he weness will sink hrough he fleece o he absorben owels below and leave he fleece relaively dry agains he rabbi s fee. Tha seup is also sof, so i helps alleviae he pressure issue ha occurs on hard surfaces. Tha layered seup should be changed daily, depending on he size of he area and he concenraion of weness. Lierboxes can be modified as well. You can use a very absorben lier such as Yeserday s News or wood sove pelles, and hen pu a hin layer of a sofer pulp lier such as Carefresh on op, where he rabbi s fee acually have conac. Pine and cedar shavings, no recommended for rabbis due o heir respiraory and possible liver effecs, are also a very poor choice for foo healh, since hey are no very absorben and jus pool he weness. 10 Is There Any Room a he Inn?, Con'd. On he way o he sheler I sar o wonder... wha kind of shape will he (she) be in? Have hey been negleced and abused? Afer hose and oher hauning quesions run hrough my mind, I arrive a he sheler like a marini of emoions ha has been boh shaken and sirred. A his poin I hurry ino he sheler so I can see for myself he condiion of he rabbi. Again, I ve been lucky o have never received any who have been in exremely poor condiion. The key word being exremely. In he one siuaion where he rabbi was in a bad sae, hey decided ha he merciful acion was o euhanize he rabbi due o severe head rauma. I open he door and see he graeful faces of he voluneers. They know ha my being here means hey will no have o pu down he furry, long-eared creaure who has charmed hem. I wai anxiously for hem o wrap up business wih he line of people ha is always here. Finally, hey gree me and escor me back o he holding area of his animal prison (probably he only prisons where every inmae really is innocen). As I m aken hrough he room wih he various barking dogs and meowing cas, I m inroduced o a scared and nervous rabbi who is unsure of his fae; perhaps wondering, Wha did I do o be pu in such a place? I slowly inroduce myself and ry o comfor and assure my new friend ha he has jus been given a second chance a a wonderful and happy life wih people who will be kind and generous no only wih food and waer, bu wih heir love. Afer he paperwork is filled ou and all he sincere hank you s are said, my new foser rabbis secure in heir carriers are ready o leave. The drive home always seems long o me, even hough i s probably only a 15-minue commue. To make he ime go by faser, I ell hem how I m going o ake good care of hem unil we can find hem a permanen home. When we arrive I ake hem inside o ge seled in heir emporary home known as The Rabbi Room. As I prepare heir areas, I coninue o alk o hem and wach hem waching me sill unsure of heir fae. I ge he lierbox ready, fill up he waer boles and dishes as well as heir food bowls and give hem pleny of imohy hay. Besides hese basics ha every animal has he righ o, I also give hem a rug and owel for comfor. To keep he rabbis from being bored, I also supply hem wih some safe oys o occupy heir inelligen minds and a suffed animal o keep hem company. Now ha I have he living quarers ready I exam my new housemaes. Firs I like o deermine if I have a Parick or a Paricia. Then I look hrough heir fur for any abrasions, unwaned hichhikers or anyhing ou of he usual. Then I look a he ears, eyes, nose, nails and eeh. If here is nohing ha needs immediae medical aenion, I pu hem on he scale o record heir weigh. Afer all of his is compleed, i s finally ime o res and ge comforable wih he new digs. The nex sep is one ha I quie enjoy. This is also a very imporan one... he name. Someimes i comes o me as soon as I see cerain physical characerisics and someimes i akes ime o ge o know he personaliy. The reason I feel he name is imporan is because in addiion o picures, he name and accompanying copy is all ha I have o enice a poenial adoper on he personaliy of he rabbi. In he words of Bob Barker, Help conrol he pe populaion, have your pe spayed or neuered. As soon as possible, I ge he rabbis o he ve for his procedure, a fecal es and any oher necessary

11 reamens. I always feel errible for having o ake hem so shorly afer coming o me, bu his is very imporan and so far hey have all forgiven me. Some have aken a lile longer o forgive me, bu hey do forgive me. Besides he daily care and raining i s now a waiing game. I wai for a phone call or an email from some kind soul who is ready o adop one of my foser rabbis and make him par of he family. I have had some foser rabbis longer han ohers. There s no paricular reason for his. I like o hink i s fae making sure ha each rabbi goes o he righ home. The applicaion is filled ou; quesions are asked, hen i s ime o mee. The car pulls up and he excied poenial adopers rush o he door. I love o see he anicipaion on he faces of hose who are ready o have a rabbi companion. Afer he brief hellos, he waiing is over as I carry my foser rabbi o mee his poenial family. Wih everyone siing on he floor, I pu he rabbi down o hop around and mee everyone. Some are more reserved, allowing pes, bu being cauious of he srangers. Some immediaely urn on he charm, showing off wih binkies and oher anics. I is a his ime ha I know ha my foser rabbi has found his permanen home. Alhough his is wha we work oward, i is sill a bierswee momen for me. I have o say goodbye o his swee animal for whom I have developed deep emoion. Tha s when I remind myself... Now I have room o rescue anoher rabbi from an unfair fae. As hey drive off, I smile wih ears in my eyes, ready for he process o sar all over. To all of he foserers and voluneers, I would like o say congraulaions on doing such a wonderful job for our imporan mission. To he rabbis I have fosered, i was a privilege and a pleasure having you in my life even if only for a shor ime. And o everyone who has opened his or her home o a rabbi, well you ve already been rewarded wih more han anyhing I can say. There are several circumsances and scenarios ha lead up o every rabbi s dismissal and pah o me. Bu my involvemen almos always sars wih one simple quesion, Is here any room a he inn? I s a Rabbia Cones! All our wonderful rabbis have a place o call heir own in our homes. We wan you o send in phoos of your bunny s area. The conesan wih he mos elaborae rabbia will win. Make sure your rabbi has pleny of room and ime o exercise ouside his cage, if he is caged. He needs o run around and no be confined o siing in one place in order o disribue he weigh off of his heels. Keep oenails clipped shor and do a foo inspecion weekly so you become familiar wih wha is happening on your rabbi s fee.
