Clerk Sister (contd. p. 312) The growth of the Syro-Malabar Church in the twentieth century is widely admitted as marvelous. This energetic Church took up challenges in the Mission fields and thus from 1962 Syro-Malabar Exarchates began to be established outside Kerala. In1976 the Exarchates were elevated to the status of Eparchies. The syro-malabar Church, having 12 eparchies in Kerala under two Metropolitans - Ernakulam and Changanasserry, - and 9 eparchies outside Kerala under Latin Povinces, was found to be in an anomalous situation when CCEO was promulgated in 1990. Taking into consideration the age old traditions and the enormous growth of the Apostolic and IndianChurch and in order to rectify the above anomaly, Pope John Paul II, by the constitution Quae Maiori, dated 16 December 1992, raised the Syro-Malabar Church to the status of a Major Archiepiscopal Sui iuris Church with the title of Ernakulam - Angamaly. The erection was published on 29 January 1993. The Metropolitan of Ernakulam, Mar Antony Cardinal Padiyara, was made the first Major Archbishop. The proper territory of the Major Archbishop was determined to the territory of the two provinces of Ernakulam and Changanasserry. The powers of the Major Archbishop were given temporarily to a Pontifical Delegate in the person of Archbishop Mar Abraham Kattumana. The installation of the Major Archbishop and the inauguration of the first Synod of Bishops of the Syro-Malabar Major Archiepiscopal Church was held at Ernakulam on 20 May 1993. In 1995 Mar Varkey Vithayathil CSSR was apointed the apostilic administrator of the Syro-Malabar Church. On 22nd of December 1999 he became the Major Archbishop. A new eparchy of Belthangady was erected in 1999, bifurcating the Archeparchy of Thalassery. Its first Bishop is Mar Lawrance Mukkuzhy. Another Eparchy was erected in Chicago for the Syro-Malabar migrants in February 2001, its first Bishop being Mar Jacob Angadiath. It is considred to be a remarkable event and mile stone in the history of the Syro-Malab Church. Suimilarly, the new eparchy of Idukki was erected in January 2003, bifurcating the Eparchy of Kothamangalam, with its first bishop Mar Mathew Anikuzhikattil. A new eparchy, Bhadravathi in Karnataka, was carved out of the eparchy of Manathavady in 2007 with Mar Joseph Erumachadath as its first bishop. At present, Syro-Malabar Major Archiepiscopal Church is having 16 Eparchies inside its proper territory under 5 Metropolitan sees and II Eparchies outside the proper territory. The Syro-Malabar Church is thus the Apostolic, Indian, Catholic and Eastern (Major Archiepiscopal sui iuris) Church of the St. Thomas Christians. Lourdes Metropolitan Cathedral 503
