THE SEVENTY SEVENS In the last lesson we saw that it was the angel Gabriel that came to Daniel. It is Gabriel that speaks here: DAN 9:23 At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision. THE SEVENTY SEVENS 24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. 25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. THE GAP AND THE COVENANT To this point, Daniel 9:24-26, we have accounted for sixty-nine weeks of the prophesied seventy weeks Only an Messianic interpretation can show literal fulfillment of Daniel 9:24-26. This fact lends credence to the future fulfillment of Daniel 9:27 with a literal seven-year Tribulation. There is not a seven year period in history that clearly fulfills Daniel 9:27 other than a 15 future seven-year Tribulation.

THE GAP AND THE COVENANT The gap (the Church Age) between the sixty-ninth and the seventieth week began with the dispersion of the Jews by the Romans in 70AD. It will end when the Jews have returned to their land after this Roman dispersion, since the interaction of the Antichrist and the Jews will take place in Jerusalem and with a rebuilt Temple. This seven-year Tribulation time-table is 16 therefore to occur sometime after 1948.

THE GAP AND THE COVENANT The Antichrist ( he ) will make a covenant with many, particularly with unbelieving Israel ( the people of verse 24). The he of verse 27 refers to the Antichrist. Some think that the he is referring to the Messiah, but Jesus never made or confirmed a covenant with anyone for seven years. This verse confirms that the Temple will 17 be rebuilt.

THE GAP AND THE COVENANT Also, the attempt by liberal theologians to make this prophecy fit Antiochus Epiphanes collapses at this verse. Antiochus did not confirm any covenant of seven years with Israel. Finally, the immediate context of the preceding verse 26 is referring to the Antichrist, not the Messiah. 18

THE GAP AND THE COVENANT ISA 28:15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves: 16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste. 19 (Continued)

THE GAP AND THE COVENANT 17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place. 18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it. 20

THE GAP AND THE COVENANT After 3-1/2 years ( in the midst ) the Antichrist will seize the Temple for himself and will sit in the Temple, proclaiming himself to be God. The oblation, or the newly installed sacrificial system, will be brought to an end by this action. This action of the Antichrist is similar to the sacrifice of a pig on the Temple altar by Antiochus Epiphanes Notice this in 21 non-canonical 1 and 2 Maccabees:

THE GAP AND THE COVENANT 1 MACC 1:44 For the king [Antiochus] had sent letters by messengers unto Jerusalem and the cities of Juda that they should follow the strange laws of the land, 45 And forbid burnt offerings, and sacrifice, and drink offerings, in the temple; and that they should profane the sabbaths and festival days: 46 And pollute the sanctuary and holy people: 47 Set up altars, and groves, and chapels of idols, and sacrifice swine's flesh, and unclean 22 beasts: KJV

THE GAP AND THE COVENANT 2 MACC 6:1 Not long after this the king sent an old man of Athens to compel the Jews to depart from the laws of their fathers, and not to live after the laws of God: 2 And to pollute also the temple in Jerusalem, and to call it the temple of Jupiter Olympius; and that in Garizim, of Jupiter the Defender of strangers, as they did desire that dwelt in the place. THE GAP AND THE COVENANT 4 For the temple was filled with riot and revelling by the Gentiles, who dallied with harlots, and had to do with women within the circuit of the holy places, and besides that brought in things that were not lawful. 5 The altar also was filled with profane things, which the law forbiddeth. 6 Neither was it lawful for a man to keep sabbath days or ancient fasts, or to profess himself at all to be a Jew. THE GAP AND THE COVENANT The Antichrist will act likewise. 2TH 2:4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. MAT 24:15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, 25 (whoso readeth, let him understand:)

THE GAP AND THE COVENANT Abomination was a common appellation for a pagan idol. Behind all idolatry are evil spirits. 1CO 10:20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. 26

THE GAP AND THE COVENANT In 1 Maccabees 1:54, on 6 December 167 BC, we find that an abomination of desolation (a horrible abomination or detestable idol possibly a statue of Zeus) was erected upon the Temple altar. 1 MACC 1:54 Now the fifteenth day of the month Casleu, in the hundred forty and fifth year, they set up the abomination of desolation upon the altar, and builded idol altars throughout the cities of Juda on every 27 side; KJV

THE GAP AND THE COVENANT In Daniel 9:27, the words until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate refers to God using the persecutions by the Antichrist to prune and purge the nation of Israel after which He (God) will act in wrath against the Antichrist and his world system. Another reason that the Tribulation is for the Jewish nation, The time of Jacob s 28 trouble.

THE GAP AND THE COVENANT This is clearly prophesied by Jeremiah and Isaiah. JER 30:7 Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob's trouble [the Tribulation], but he [Israel] shall be saved out of it. ISA 34:2 For the indignation of the LORD is upon all nations, and his fury upon all their armies: he hath utterly destroyed them, he hath delivered them to the slaughter. 29

DANIEL S SEVENTY WEEKS In the last lesson we discussed timeline of the prophecy of the seventy weeks. We saw that scholars are uncertain about the beginning year of the decree to rebuild Jerusalem. The year of the decree may be 444 or 445? The prophecy is fulfilled using the same calculations applied to either of those years. The only difference is the resulting date of 31 the Passover week of Christ s death.

DANIEL S SEVENTY WEEKS The Biblical year is the lunar year of 360 days and Biblical prophecy must be understood in light of a Biblical year. To see clearly that this is so we refer to the book of Revelation where 3-1/2 years is described as 42 months and also 1260 days, thus 1260 days divided by 360 days is 3-1/2 years exactly. The commandment to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem was issued by the Persian King Artaxerxes Longimanus on the 1 st of Nisan 32 in the 20 th year of his reign.

DANIEL S SEVENTY WEEKS According to Sir Robert Anderson and Grant Jeffery, this date computes to 14 March 445 BC. Three score and two weeks (62 weeks) plus seven weeks (69 weeks) will occur from 14 March 445 BC until Messiah is cut off. This computes to 60 + 2 + 7 = 69 weeks of years, or 483 Biblical years. 483 years X 360 days per year = 173,880 33 days.

DANIEL S SEVENTY WEEKS Using the 445BC date as the start, we arrive at the date Jesus was cut off on the 10 th day of Nisan, 6 April 32 AD, Palm Sunday (Passover was 14 Apr 32AD) On this date He entered Jerusalem and was rejected. Using the 444BC date as the start we arrive at 30 March 33AD as the date of Jesus passion week (Passover = 4 Apr 33AD). 34 Either date fulfills the prophecy.

THE TIME OF THE VISITATION 42 Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes. 43 For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, 44 And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because 37 thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.

THE TIME OF THE VISITATION This was the time of their visitation. The leaders refused it. It would be exactly 69 weeks of years. 38

THE TIME OF THE VISITATION Jewish Calendar (360 days per year) (7 X 7) + (62 X 7) years = 483 years 483 years X 360 days 173,880 days This is Daniel s 69 weeks of years exactly until Messiah comes. 39

THE TIME OF THE VISITATION So far we have seen there is enough information to predict a date for Messiah to show up in Jerusalem. The date of Messiah s entrance into Jerusalem or His death depends upon the date of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem. It is either 445 or 444BC. 40

THE TIME OF THE VISITATION Calculation 445BC 32AD 14 March 445 BC to 14 March 32 AD = 476 years of 365 days = 173,740 days. 14 March 32 AD until 6 April 32 AD (Palm Sunday) = 24 days. Add 116 Leap Days. 173,740 + 24 + 116 = 173,880 days. This is Daniel s 69 weeks of years exactly. This calculation is from 445 BC. Jesus death is in 32 AD 41

THE TIME OF THE VISITATION In the calculation below, Jesus died on 30 March 33AD, calculated from 444BC. 42

THE TIME OF THE VISITATION You can see from the calculation that we arrived at the date to expect the Messiah by counting the days of the prophecy. When Israel rejected her Messiah, God s prophetic clock stopped. One week or seven years remain. The time in between is the Church Age. The remaining seven years, Daniel s 70 th week awaits future fulfillment in the seven 43 years of tribulation.

THE TIME OF THE VISITATION Then, Blindness befell Israel. ROM 11:25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. 26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: 44

CYCLES IN JEWISH HISTORY 45

SEVENTY YEAR CYCLES 70 YEAR CYCLES There are three historically significant cycles of seventy years in Israel s history: First The Babylonian captivity (606BC to 536BC) began with Nebuchadnezzar invading Judea in 605 BC, and ended with the decree of Cyrus that allowed the Jews to lay the Temple foundation in 536BC. 46

SEVENTY YEAR CYCLES 70 YEAR CYCLES Second There was a period of Babylonian desolations which began in 589BC with Nebuchadnezzar conquering the land and besieging Jerusalem and ended in 520BC when the foundation of the Second Temple was laid. Zerubbabel and Joshua (the high priest) led this effort, and the Temple was completed in 515BC (see: Hag 2:18). 47

SEVENTY YEAR CYCLES Thirdly The restoration period began with the dedication of the Second Temple on Passover in 515BC, and ended with the decree of the Persian King Artaxerxes for Nehemiah to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem in the month of Nisan, 445 or 444BC. This was given in the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes as we have already discussed at length in Nehemiah 2:1-8. 48

SEVENTY YEAR CYCLES Israel became a monarchy under King Saul in 1096BC, and 490 years later was carried into captivity by Nebuchadnezzar in 606 BC (1096BC - 606BC = 490 years). It is interesting that 490 equals 70 times 7. During the 490 years from King Saul, Israel failed to keep her Sabbaths and would go into 70 years of captivity for that disobedience. 49

SEVENTY YEAR CYCLES LEV 26:34 Then shall the land enjoy her sabbaths, as long as it lieth desolate, and ye be in your enemies' land; even then shall the land rest, and enjoy her sabbaths. 35 As long as it lieth desolate it shall rest; because it did not rest in your sabbaths, when ye dwelt upon it. The year 606 BC was a year of Jubilee, and Jeremiah writes: 50

SEVENTY YEAR CYCLES JER 34:8 This is the word that came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, after that the king Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people which were at Jerusalem, to proclaim liberty unto them. 17 Therefore thus saith the LORD; Ye have not hearkened unto me, in proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother, and every man to his neighbour: behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, saith the LORD, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be 51 removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.

SEVENTY YEAR CYCLES We then see in 2 Chronicles that the land is to enjoy her Sabbaths: 2CH 36:17 Therefore he brought upon them the king of the Chaldees, who slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion upon young man or maiden, old man, or him that stooped for age: he gave them all into his hand. SEVENTY YEAR CYCLES 19 And they burnt the house of God, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem, and burnt all the palaces thereof with fire, and destroyed all the goodly vessels thereof. 20 And them that had escaped from the sword carried he away to Babylon; where they were servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Persia: 21 To fulfil the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as she lay desolate she 53 kept sabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years.

430 YEAR CYCLES 430 YEAR CYCLES Next we see that there were two significant periods of 430 years in Israel s history: First The period from the Abrahamic Covenant to the Exodus from Egypt on Passover was 430 years: EXO 12:41 And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts 55 of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt.

430 YEAR CYCLES GAL 3:17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. 56

430 YEAR CYCLES Second The period from closing of the Old Testament canon to the public ministry of Christ. Malachi, the last Old Testament book, was written in 396 BC: MAL 3:1 Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he 57 shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.

430 YEAR CYCLES According the Grant Jeffery, the Lord came to His Temple in 28AD. 396BC to 28AD equals 430 Biblical years with only one year between 1BC and 1AD. There is no year zero. To the beginning of Jesus public ministry is 423.8 calendar years (430 Biblical years). 58

490 YEAR CYCLES FOUR HUNDRED NINETY YEAR CYCLES There were five 490 year cycles in Jewish history from the birth of Abraham to the setting up of Christ s Kingdom on earth: First From the birth of Abraham until the Exodus: Age of Abraham when he left Ur 75 years. Plus From the Abrahamic Covenant to the 59 Exodus - 430 years + 75 years = 505 years.

490 YEAR CYCLES Minus the 15 year rebellion when Abraham had a son with Hagar(-) 15 years 505 years 15 years = 490 years. Notice that God s prophetic clock stops during times of punishment just as when it stopped before Daniel s 70 th year. 60

490 YEAR CYCLES Second The coronation of King Saul until the Babylonian captivity (1096BC to 606BC) equals 490 years. Third From the dedication of the First Temple (Solomons) in 1005 BC to the decree of Artaxerxes to rebuild Jerusalem in 445/444BC. 1005BC to 445/444BC = 560 years Minus Babylonian Captivity (-) 70 years = 490 years (560 years 70 years = 61 490 years).

490 YEAR CYCLES Fourth From the dedication of the First Temple in 1005BC until the dedication of the Second Temple in 515BC. The dedication of both temples occurred on the exact same day of the Jewish calendar, the fifteenth of Tishri, the Feast of Tabernacles. Dedication of First Temple 1005 BC. 490 YEAR CYCLES Fifth The fifth cycle is Daniel s vision of the 70 weeks. 14 March 445BC to 6 April 32AD (or 5 March 444BC to 30 March 33AD) is 483 Biblical years exactly (69 years). The final week of 7 years (the Tribulation) completes the 490-year cycle. 63

FINAL THOUGHTS The prophecy of the Seven Weeks is one of the most important witnessing tools to show the accuracy of fulfilled prophecy in the Bible. Many critics like to point to supposed errors in the Bible as a reason for their skepticism. The supposed errors, when critically examined, can be adequately explained when taken in context and with the support 65 of other Scriptures and historical evidence.

FINAL THOUGHTS No other religious book can attest to fulfilled prophecies to support their Scriptures. Daniel s Seventy Weeks stands as an astonishing example of the great detail and accuracy of God s prophetic Word. There are other instances of fulfilled prophecy in the Bible, but this prophecy stands as the most astonishing in its details and accuracy. 66

FINAL THOUGHTS All Christians should take comfort that God is able to do what He says He will do. When Jesus says that He will come to get us, rest assured that He will. Our God did not leave us with cunningly devised fables. 2 PETER 1:16 For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of 67 his majesty.
