Amos Part 1 The Herdman of Tekoa Key Verses: Amos 1:1-1:2 This opening verse of Amos reveals significant detail and context that establishes what this prophecy is really about and how it applies to each of us in our time. The truth is hidden in the symbols and it is up to the Lord s people to dig, seek and find the treasure hidden from the world (Pro 25:2, 1Co 2:7). Amo 1:1 The words of Amos, who was among the herdmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake. To the carnal mind this sure sounds like a history lesson and nice factoid on the nation of Israel and its dual kings. Yet we know better. We know these words contain essential spiritual understanding to God s Elect, the very people these words were actually written for and the very reasons the events actually happened (1Pe 1:10-12). Not only are the Lord s words spoken in parables but the actual events portrayed in the Bible are done in parables. Mar 4:11 And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables: Hos 12:10 I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions (understanding), and used similitudes (parables), by the ministry of the prophets. Amos, like all the prophets, will be focused on the judgment of God. Judgment is the blessing that comes in this age to the firstfruits unto the Lord and those He calls by His Name (1Pe 4:17). This study will be about the same event and process that was studied in Micah; yet there are greater and different details here in Amos. Together all these prophetic books and the whole of Scripture comprise the truth. Psa 119:160 (ASV) The sum of thy word is truth; And every one of thy righteous ordinances endureth for ever. The more we know of the remaking process (Rev 21:5, Jer 18:4), the better equipped we are to bear the painful process that must be endured on the Potter s wheel. We have to endure to the very end if we are to make the first resurrection and be used of God to bring salvation to all mankind. All these events in the prophets are there for examples so we will learn and better understand the way of the Lord. We best take heed of those lessons, all of them, lest we fall. 1Co 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. 1Co 10:12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. There are six main points we will highlight from this first verse. This study will hopefully reveal that Amos represents you and me and all of God s Elect. We are of the herdmen from spiritual Tekoa. We speak words of truth when given spiritual understanding that bring about the destruction and death of our old man who represent the rejected anointed of the Lord who shall not be King. These prophetic words we speak and hear, culminate as we mature in a great spiritual earthquake that shakes out the old and ushers in the new man. 1

1. Meaning of Amos: Amos is Strong s H5986 H5986, a mo s, aw-moce From H6006; burdensome; Amos, an Israelitish prophet: - Amos. H6006, a mas, aw-mas A primitive root; to load, that is, impose a burden (or figuratively infliction): - be borne, (heavy) burden (self), lade, load, put. Total KJV Occurrences: 9 laded, 2 borne, 1 burden, 1 lade, 1 lading, 1 loaden, 1 loadeth, 1 put, 1 The most common rendering of AMAS is lading or some variation which refers to the act of working to load or burden something. Looking at some of the uses will help us see that the Lord s people are those who build the Holy City (Joh 14:12) through our lading on the wall. We are the awesome hands of the Lord as Steve s ongoing study has shown time and time again. Neh 4:17 They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded [H6006], every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon. It s not us doing the work, it is Christ in us, The Word doing the work. The hearing of truth that the chosen of God (Amos) speak brings a burden upon our rebellious old man when we have spiritual ears to hear. This burden eventually will bring us to our wits when we give up on flesh and then the Lord steps in and saves us from our sin. The whole world is at enmity with Jesus Christ and His people; but those the Lord causes to hear will be burdened in a positive way as their old man will be destroyed in the process. Zec 12:3 And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden [H6006] themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it. Whether positive or negative, all of the ladening is of course the Lord s work in us and it works for the greater good. The many tribulations that laden us are the benefits for the new man which come from the judgment that IS NOW on the House of God. Psa 68:19 Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth [H6006] us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah. 2

It is a good thing, the Lord s prophet s put a burden on our old man. The burden of the Word of God destroys the old man and leads us to give up on the flesh (Phi 3:3) and frees us of the heavy burden of saving ourselves. We labor with this excessive yoke and burden until we truly come to know He is the Lord of heaven and of the earth and rest in His Sovereignty. Mat 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Mat 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Mat 11:30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. 2. Amos was among the herdmen. A herdmen is another name for a shepherd, one that looks over the flock. That is exactly what every man that comes through door into The Christ becomes. Being among the herdmen is symbolic words that one is in the Body of Christ. The herdmen are also the watchmen and have a duty and responsibility to protect and watch over the little flock of God. We are Jesus Christ who the world hates and as such we are also the shepherd of the sheep says the Lord. Joh 10:2 But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. Joh 10:3 To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. The door is Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ is HIS BODY. Even King David as a type of Christ, was in the same line of work as Amos. 1Sa 17:34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock: 1Sa 17:35 And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him. As is our Lord, so are we His people (Joh 20:21, 1Jo 4:17). We are His chosen instruments to perform the greater works of God in the earth (Joh 14:12). I hope you grasp the seriousness of this higher calling and the high price that is demanded. Joh 10:11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep Shepherds have many roles, protecting the sheep and ensuring the sheep are nourished. Christ tells Peter and all of His people to feed, tend and nourish His flock. We do this when we obey (love God) His commandments. Our love for the Lord will manifest our good works. You shall know them by their fruit! Joh 21:16 He saith to him again a second time, Simon, son of John, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Tend my sheep. Gal 6:10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us work that which is good toward all men, and especially toward them that are of the household of the faith. 3. Amos was from Tekoa. Tekoa was one of the 15 cities (3 x 5) that Rehoboam built for the defense of Judah and is in the same Philistine plain and journey we looked at in the Micah study. 3

The root word for Tekoa is very instructive to understanding Amos s ministry which is the ministry for all of God s Elect. H8619, ta qo a, taw-ko -ah From H8628 (in the musical sense); a trumpet: The root of H8619 leads us to H8628 which is associated with those that BLOW the trumpets which is the Elect (the priests and sons of Aaron). Num 10:8 And the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow [H8628] with the trumpets; and they shall be to you for an ordinance for ever throughout your generations. Joe 2:1 Blow [H8628] ye the trumpet in Zion (THE BODY) and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand; The angels of the Lord are the same little flock of God who will gather in the Elect now in this age and ultimately will bring in the harvest of all men in the Lake of Fire. Mat 24:31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. The Lord is putting us, His Elect, into ministry roles as His kings and priests (Rev 5:10). Man s redemption and salvation only comes by judgment (Exo 6:6, Rev 15:8) and it s the people of spiritual Tekoa who bring this about in the appointed times. Now in the body and in the future outwardly to all men. Mat 19:28 And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 1Co 6:2 Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? And if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters? 4. These are events Amos Saw. It says the words spoken were words that Amos SAW. Obviously, we don t see spoken words and what is being said here is Amos, like John the Apostle, is bearing record of what He saw in the Spirit (Rev 1:2). All the words of the Bible are Spirit (Joh 6:63) and seeing in the spirit means one s eyes of understanding have been enlightened. This comes to each of us in turn by our fellow brethren that make up the church of the living God. Eph 3:10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, Rev 19:10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. Rev 19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war 4

Forty-Four times in Amos we will see the phrase Thus Saith the Lord. Amos speaks with the authority of Jesus Christ, a type of the Elect, who would come later when the Spirit was and is given. God s Elect speak things they see in the Spirit with all authority and thus are the Lord s ministers of grace and fulfill living by every word God spoke including those of Amos (Mat 4:4). 5. Amos prophesied in the days of King Uzziah of Judah and King Jeroboam of Israel. What does this mean? Every truth is determined by two or more witnesses and here we have two witnesses of the truth that judgment for our sin results in death to the man of sin who has set himself up as God in the hearts of all men. Mike recently covered this spiritual significance of the life of King Uzziah and why Isaiah s prophecy was in that year of Uzziah s death. Click here for that study. King Uzziah got puffed up after doing well and acted presumptuously against the Lord s order and attempted to perform the duties of a priest. 2Ch 26:16 But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction: for he transgressed against the LORD his God, and went into the temple of the LORD to burn incense upon the altar of incense. For this transgression he was stricken with leprosy in the same way King Saul and our old man as the rejected anointed of God cannot inherit the kingdom of God and must and IS DYING. Here is how Mike summed up the conclusion from that study. King Uzziah symbolizes the leprous king who is sitting on God s throne in the temple of God showing [himself] that he is God, and his story symbolizing that man of sin the abomination that makes desolate, being cast out of the temple by those who are faithful priests of the Word of God. 2Th 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 2Th 2:8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Amos prophesied to both kings and King Jeroboam (#2) of the northern kingdom of Israel, suffered the same fate with different details for similar series of sins. Jeroboam did evil in the sight of the Lord and committed the same presumptuous sins in violating God s prescribed way of worship and priestly service. We will need to look back to Jeroboam #1 to see this. 2Ki 14:23 In the fifteenth year of Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah Jeroboam (#2) the son of Joash king of Israel began to reign in Samaria, and reigned forty and one years. 2Ki 14:24 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD: he departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam (#1) the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin. The first Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, is called out 15 different times in reference to later Kings of Israel in that those succeeding kings, just like Jeroboam #2, did not depart from Jeroboam #1 s sins that made Israel to sin. The sin that causes Israel (The Elect, God s people) to sin is idolatry 5

by setting up our own image to God and worshipping our way in God s Temple. Like Uzziah, Jeroboam, is this man of sin sitting in God s temple (1Co 3:16) showing himself as God paying no heed to the commandments of the Lord (Luk 6:46). Here is the sin of Jeroboam #1. 1Ki 12:28 Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. 1Ki 12:29 And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan. 1Ki 12:30 And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan. 1Ki 12:31 And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi. 1Ki 12:32 And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made. 1Ki 12:33 So he offered upon the altar which he had made in Bethel the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel: and he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense. 6. These words were spoken two years before the earthquake. The prophesy of Amos is something we live out before a massive spiritual EARTHQUAKE comes that is bringing about the new man and salvation. Joel speaks of the same day and same event as all flesh shall see the salvation of the Lord by this process. Joe 3:16 The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel. This earthquake in the days of Uzziah did come outwardly and was spoken about in the prophesy of Zechariah. This earthquake is the one that is, was and will be coming in the lives of every man in the day of the Lord for each. Zec 14:1 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.. Zec 14:5 And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with thee The death of the old man via the fiery judgment of God is the means the Lord has devised (2Sa 14:14) to save all men. This work is accomplished via the seven angels that open the seals, blow the trumpets and pour out the wrath through the spoken Word. Rev 16:17 And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done. 6

Rev 16:18 And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. The earthquake comes after much tribulation, it does not come at first upon hearing truth and beginning our walk of suffering. Mat 24:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: Mat 24:30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. We have to be prepared for what we must endure which is losing our life and filling up in the afflictions for the sake of the Body. No one can bear the spiritual earthquakes without being prepared. The Lord won t try us beyond what we can bear (1Co 10:13). Joh 16:12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. There is indeed a lag time between hearing the words of Truth and the coming of the earthquake that brings true salvation and the death of the old man. Yet the time is short, it is said to be always at hand when we can read, hear and keep these words spiritually (Rev 1:3). The Elect will live out both resurrections inwardly before it will occur outwardly (will be). Christ comes the second time, in the Day of the Lord, to save us and bring us out of the state of disobedience. This spiritual earthquake (Heb 9:27-28) happens is, was and will be as we are being burned up. This is our inward second resurrection, our Day of Judgement that happens to us first whilst in vessels of clay. Joh 5:29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. Act 24:15 And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust Our perfection is on the third day, which is that day known as the Day of the Lord. The earthquake that will come as we live out the words of Amos waiting for the Lord to raise us from the dead. Days being years we have other Scriptures that confirm the separation from hearing and doing the Word. Hos 6:2 After two days (years) will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight. Our Lord speaking of Himself and His Body, His Christ, tells us we will be casting out false doctrines and healing one another but on the third day we will be perfected (Luk 13:32) through fiery trials. None of this is accomplished in FULL, until we are resurrected in spiritual bodies. Yet all these words are is, was and will be in the lives of God s Elect. The earthquake that brings salvation is 7

not a 10 second sinners prayer. The earthquake is a process in which we learn to trust and have hope in waiting for the Lord to appear within and without us. Rom 8:24 For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? Rom 8:25 But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. Rom 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Amos 1:2 is a second witness to Joel 3:16 that the roaring of the Lord from Zion, comes from the Body of Christ that are gathered in the Holy City of New Jerusalem. This is what brings about the earthquake to all men in the day an hour appointed by the Lord. Amo 1:2 And he said, The LORD will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the habitations of the shepherds shall mourn, and the top of Carmel shall wither. Jesus Christ and His Christ is the Lion of the Tribe of Judah (Rev 5:5) that opens the seals to those prepared to hear and to see the truth. The same lion is the Body of Christ that roars over the prey we catch and devour while abiding in Zion. Lies, false doctrines and our besetting sins are taken captive and all things that defile are shaken out of our spiritual heavens (mind) and out of our life (walk). Num 23:24 Behold, the people shall rise up as a great lion, and lift up himself as a young lion: he shall not lie down until he eat of the prey, and drink the blood of the slain. Pro 28:1 The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion. The works of the adversary, the accuser of the brethren, the sins and giants in the land become food for the roaring lion from Judah. Num 14:9 Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not. Jdg 14:8 And after a time he returned to take her, and he turned aside to see the carcase of the lion: and, behold, there was a swarm of bees and honey in the carcase of the (adversarial 1Pe 5:9) lion. The tops of the mountain of lies (Carmel and its prophets of Baal) will wither and be dried up as they are cast out of our heavens (Mat 12:43). In the day of the Lord, the spirits do not come back but are instead burned up and consumed by the Word of God. Joh 15:6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. The habitations of the old man will mourn and lament as everything is removed and Babylon within is thrown down (Rev 18:10-11). We have now set the stage for the words of Amos, which are the Lord s words that all of God s people speak in edifying and admonishing one another. 8

Our old man and King Uzziah s within us are being decreased as Christ within us is being increased the more we hear and abide in these living words. Next week Lord willing, we will begin to cover the eight pronouncements of punishments against specific Gentile nations culminating with the punishments of Judah and Jerusalem the very people of God. We will see the Lord will not turn back that punishment until His word has accomplished His purposes in brining salvation. That sounds like bad news but as we know that is the good news and the very process that saves us. The words of Amos will show us what we already know from the New Testament and reveal that salvation comes only by us enduring the scourging grace of a loving Father. Heb 12:6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. 9
