Parish Christmas Giving Tree Last year, thanks to your love and generosity, we donated over 1,000 gifts and over $2,000 in gift cards to families and children in need in our community and beyond. The Christmas Giving Tree will be in the Church and Walsh Hall beginning Thanksgiving weekend. The tree will be adorned with the gift requests and wishes of those who rely on help during the Christmas season. This year, we have received a request for Gift Cards to various stores in the amount of $25. While a gift card may not be the most fun gift to give, they are great ways to help out families at Christmas time. They allow parents to buy more personal items for their children (underwear, etc) and items for their homes (appliances, bedding, etc). They also allow teenagers and young adults to purchase things that fit their unique styles and tastes. We ask that you again be as generous as possible to help make Christmas a wonderful time for these children, teenagers and adults in need. Helping those in need is simple, but very much appreciated: 1. Take a tag from the tree, 2. Purchase the requested gift (gifts should be new), 3. For Groups 1, 2, 3: Wrap the gift and secure the tag to the outside, so that we can get it to the appropriate person. If it is a gift card, please be sure to put the amount on it. For Groups 4 and 5: Please return gifts unwrapped in a bag with the tag inside. Gift cards should be sealed in an envelope with the tag inside. 4. Return the gift to the church by Friday, December 15, to allow time for sorting and delivery. This year your kindness will help children and adults from the following agencies: 1. Adopt-a-Family of Nutley - Bells 2. Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark - Snowmen 3. Children in Foster Care Blue Ornaments 4. York Street Project of Jersey City - Mittens 5. Covenant House, New Jersey Red Stockings Faith Formation Schedule Sunday, December 3 - Class & Preparation for First Penance (Students & Parents) Tuesday, December 5 - Class & Preparation for First Penance (Students & Parents) Saturday, December 9 - First Penance Service 656 Page 3
Save the Date for Bambinelli Sunday/ Blessing of the Manger/ Breakfast with Santa Sunday, December 17 following the 10:30am Mass, we invite all of our families to take part in our Bambinelli Sunday. Each year, on the Third Sunday of Advent, children gather with their families in St. Peter's Square for "Bambinelli Sunday." The children bring with them figures of the Baby Jesus - the Bambinelli - from their family's Nativity scene. During the noontime prayer, the pope blesses the children and the figurines they have brought. While, we might not have the pope here to bless our Bambinelli, we will have Fr. Tom, who will bless the figurines of the Baby Jesus and our outdoor Nativity scene. So don't forget to bring your Bambinelli with you! After the blessing, we invite all of our Religious Education Families to come downstairs to Walsh Hall for Breakfast with Santa! 656 Page 4
ADVENT QUIZ (Answers included) 1. How long is advent? The quick answer is 4 weeks. Be watchful! 2. How many days? This year it will be 22. You do not know when the time will come. Be alert! As I write this article two thoughts vie for my attention. Together they form The Great Advent Conundrum of 2017. (My thanks and apologies to the play about a comet with the similar name.) The thought in bold is from the first line of today s gospel. (Mark 13:33) You will probably find it familiar as we heard similar words from Matthew during the last Sundays of ordinary time. The second is a riddle that is both informative and frightening. Christmas on a Monday creates the shortest advent possible. So what do we do? One source I read suggests letting go of busyness for the sake of being busy and focusing instead on the small yet important things. Here are just 4 ideas to consider today: A New Church Year s Resolution 1. Be open: Take on a posture of prayer. Stand, kneel or sit tall. Uncross your arms. Allow the peace and joy of the Lord to show on your face. 2. Be attentive: Open the hymnal and focus on the words of the readings, prayers and songs. It will help crowd out distractions. 3. Be changed: Leave with a small but focused action plan. Take a card from the giving tree. Join the social concerns e- mail list. See the good deed that comes to mind as the call of the Holy Spirit. Act on that felling today. 4. Be prepared and tuned in: Follow the advice we give to students of all ages: Do the reading and come on time. Pick a day this week to find the readings for next Sunday. Take a look at the connection between the reading from the prophet Isaiah and Mark s account of John the Baptist. Come to mass early next week. Be ready, open, attentive, and ready to be changed. Rinse and repeat. (Just kidding on the rinse.) Anticipating great Christmas gifts in small Advent packages, 656 Page 5
