The Gospel Project: 28.1 Elementary MC Guide The Holy Spirit Came Main Point: The Holy Spirit gives us power to do God s work. Memory Verse: Romans 8:11b God is the One who raised Christ from death. And He will give life through His Spirit that lives in you. Lesson synopsis (back ground information for the MC) When Jesus ascended to heaven, He instructed the disciples to go to Jerusalem and wait. Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would come upon them. So the disciples went back to Jerusalem, where they waited and prayed. The time came for the Jewish festival called Pentecost, or the Feast of Weeks. As with the Passover festival, Jews from all over the Roman Empire would be at the temple in Jerusalem. During this festival, the Holy Spirit came to believers in Jerusalem. They heard a sound like a violent, rushing wind. When the Holy Spirit filled the disciples, they were able to speak in foreign languages. They went out into the city and began to preach, and the Jews from all over the world were amazed. These disciples were from Galilee, but they were speaking in languages the visitors could understand. The disciples told people about God s plan. The Holy Spirit helped Peter teach: Jesus is the Messiah; Jesus was killed, but He is alive! (Acts 2:22-36) The Holy Spirit convicted the crowd and they asked, Brothers, what must we do? Peter told them to repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus. (Acts 2:37-38) That day, three thousand people received salvation! God kept His promise to send the Holy Spirit. With the Holy Spirit s help, Jesus disciples could share the gospel with the entire world. God gives the Holy Spirit to those who trust in Jesus as Lord and Savior. As you teach kids, emphasize that the Holy Spirit gives us power to do God s work, and He changes us to be more like Jesus. Play intro Video: Timeline Picture: Ok now lets look at our lesson slide. Main Point: That leads us to our main point: The Holy Spirit gives us power to do God s work. Show the Main Point Everyone say that with me (Have them repeat the MAIN Point) Very interesting! Let s take a look at how he did this! Bible Story: Play the Bible Story Video: Jesus kept His promise to send the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit came to the apostles on the Day of Pentecost. Apostle is a word for a person whom Jesus chose to do special jobs and help spread the gospel. Jesus apostles were gathered together in Jerusalem for the Jewish festival called Pentecost. During the festival, Jews from all over the Roman Empire came to the temple in Jerusalem. So when the Holy Spirit came, people from all over the world were in the city. Jesus disciples went out into the city and began to preach about Jesus. The people visiting Jerusalem spoke different languages, but they could all understand what the disciples were saying.

One of the disciples, Peter, began to preach. He said that God had planned to do wonderful things through Jesus. God sent Jesus to earth to die for our sins. Jesus died on a cross, and then God raised Him from the dead. Peter told the crowd, Jesus is alive! He said God had made Jesus both Lord and Messiah. The people in the crowd wanted to know what they could do to be saved from their sins. Peter told them to repent, to turn away from their sins and to turn to God. He said that they should be baptized in Jesus name. God will forgive your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, Peter said. Everyone who believed what Peter said was baptized. About 3,000 people joined Jesus followers. God kept His promise to send the Holy Spirit. With the Holy Spirit s help, Jesus disciples could begin their work to share the gospel with the entire world. God gives the Holy Spirit to those who trust in Jesus as Lord and Savior. The Holy Spirit gives us power to do God s work, and He changes us to be more like Jesus. Let s review our big picture question: What does the Holy Spirit do? Here is the answer: The Holy Spirit helps Christians follow Jesus. Now say that together. What does the Holy Spirit do? The Holy Spirit helps Christians follow Jesus. Show Main Point (Have them repeat the MAIN Point!) The Holy Spirit gives us power to do God s work. Application: The Holy Spirit gave power to Jesus disciples as they began the work of sharing the gospel with the entire world. Imagine if they had tried to do such a big task on their own! Check out this video. Show the Unit 28, Session 1 discussion starter video. Then lead kids to discuss the following questions: Play the Discussion Starter Video: Why do you think Zach was afraid of the water? Whom did Jesus send to be our Helper? What does the Holy Spirit do? The Holy Spirit helps Christians follow Jesus. God gives us what we need to do the job He gives us to do. Jesus told His disciples to wait for the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gives us power to share the gospel in all the world. Jesus ascended to heaven in a cloud. As we wait for Jesus to return, we can do His work by the power of the Holy Spirit. Show Memory Verse: Repeat after me Romans 8:11b God is the One who raised Christ from death. And He will give life through His Spirit that lives in you. Show Main Point: The Holy Spirit gives us power to do God s work. (Have them repeat the MAIN Point!) Go over Classroom Rules: 1. Respect your leaders 2. Respect others 3. Respect the property 4. The Holy Spirit Came Acts 2:1-4,22-42 On the day of Pentecost, Jesus disciples were gathered together in Jerusalem. All of a sudden, a sound came from heaven. It was like a strong rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where Jesus disciples were staying. Then tongues appeared like flames of fire, and they rested on each of the disciples. The disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit gave them the ability to speak in different languages! Peter spoke to a crowd that had gathered. God pointed out to you Jesus the Nazarene, he said. You saw the miracles, wonders, and signs God did through Jesus. Even though God planned for Jesus to die, you used lawless people to nail Him to a cross and kill Him. But death did not keep hold of Jesus; God raised Jesus from the dead. Then Peter said, You have seen the truth: Jesus is alive! He went up to heaven to be with God the Father. Do not doubt this. Peter continued, When you killed Jesus, you killed the Messiah! The Holy Spirit convinced the people that Peter was telling the truth. What must we do to be saved? they asked. Peter told the people to repent, to turn away from their sins and to turn to God. God will forgive your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Be baptized in the name of Jesus, he said. Everyone who believed Peter s message was baptized. That day, about 3,000 people joined Jesus followers. They learned what Jesus disciples taught, and they met with other believers every day. They broke bread together and prayed. Christ Connection: God kept His promise to send the Holy Spirit. With the Holy Spirit s help, Jesus disciples could begin their work to share the gospel with the entire world. God gives the Holy Spirit to those who trust in Jesus as Lord and Savior. The Holy Spirit gives us power to do God s work, and He changes us to be more like Jesus.
