Group s Living Inside Out The Can-Do Large-Group/Small-Group Kit for Children s Ministry Welcome to Living Inside Out the curriculum that dares kids to live out their faith 24/7. You re a Small-Group Leader. You re the one God has gifted with an ear for lengthy tales about impossible math homework and favorite cereals. You have a patient heart and a knack for bringing kids out of their shells. With your God-given talents, you re about to help create an unforgettable, personal, God-soaked experience for your kids. As a Small-Group Leader, you ll: Experience Small-Group Pow (and Large-Group Wow). The large-group/small-group format works, especially when you have a diverse age-range in one room. Large group, through music, dramas, and experiences, offers a nonthreatening and low-impact way to get kids talking to other kids about stuff they love and about God. Kids feel the excitement of praise and worship with their friends and have fun interacting through object lessons and experiences. Small group digs deeper, firmly planting the Bible in the soil of children s hearts while kids build close relationships with peers. Both large- and small-group times get kids excited about what God is saying through Scripture, using thought-provoking questions to help them express what s happening in their hearts. Reinforce the Bible Point. While the large-group experience is multi-age, high-impact, and interactive, small-group time is age-specific, personal, and conversational. What kids experience broadly with many in large-group time will be brought home and solidified in a group of 5 to 8 kids. Each Bible story, Bible Point, and life-application concept is emphasized, underlined, and highlighted in small group. With fun activities, kids learn God s Word and make lifelong friends without even realizing that that s what is happening. Choose Your Activities. Each small group s activities are in an easy-to-follow format in your Small-Group Leader Guide. A Group Activity recaps the Bible story experienced in large group. The Memory Maker activity helps kids get hands-on with the Scripture, creatively using the Bible Memory Maker in a variety of ways. Living Inside Out Every Day challenges kids with easy-to-do daily and weekly activities a vital component to the Living Inside Out curriculum. These challenges are specifically designed for kids and families to continue the Living Inside Out experience throughout the week. Life application and parental involvement are accomplished over something as simple as a fun dinner conversation or a family walk! Be REAL. Group s REAL learning philosophy is Relational (kids connect with one another), Experiential (kids make discoveries), Applicable (the Bible connects to kids lives), and Learner-Based (kids experience the Bible in ways they learn best). With Group s REAL learning, kids connect to Jesus and you get to experience that connection right along with them. Living Inside Out gets kids to dive headfirst into a cool, relevant, loving relationship with God and we re asking you to do the same. Above all? Have fun showing these kids Jesus. It s what you were born to do.

Leader Training Unexpected Adaptation If there s one thing you can count on when leading children, it s that you can t count on things going as planned. You have to be prepared for any circumstance. How do you handle it when carefully laid plans suddenly take a turn? What things do you do to keep your cool and roll with the changes? On-The-Go Training You stayed up the night before carefully practicing the activity for small group the next morning. You even thought ahead and practiced with your own children. You re confident in the amazing experience your small group will have. But who knew that so many children wouldn t be able to perform the activity as written because they couldn t blow the paper wad out of the bottle? Who knew how distressed they d be when they didn t have the same results as the written lesson described? What do you do? Scrap the activity? But then what do you replace it with? This scenario is familiar but the solution is attainable. Adapt. Let go of perfection. Use the children s unexpected results by asking open-ended questions to teach the intended lesson. Things won t always go as planned. It s just a fact of life. So when the unexpected happens, breathe, move on, use those teachable moments, and do your best. A couple of alternatives for kids who can t blow the paper out of the bottle: Remind them it was a mighty wind and to blow very hard. Show them how to keep the bottle level and not tilt it down. Have them try again with a friend. The key is to not panic, act visibly discouraged, or give up on helping kids learn the point. Some other suggestions: If you have more kids in small group than expected, have children form pairs during activities. Scout around and see if any small groups have an extra volunteer to spare. Or explain the situation to your small group, and ask for kids suggestions. Involving children in the discussion empowers them and often results in great solutions. The same holds true if you have too few children show up. Explain the game or activity to your children, and let them think of creative solutions. Children may opt to play numerous roles in a skit or combine forces with another small group. Trust yourself and trust your kids. Together you can adapt to any situation. Living Inside Out Preschool 5

Take It Home Take this training deeper as you think over these questions: 1 2 3 How flexible are you in your teaching? What kinds of situations frustrate you in your small group? How can you more easily adapt to unexpected situations as you lead? Application Assignment As you think about your small-group ministry, focus on your relationships. Trust your relationship with God. Foster your relationships with the children in your small group. When the unexpected happens, you ll have a firm rock to stand on as you survey the situation and implement your solutions. 6 Living Inside Out Preschool
