The world calls it the triumph of the human spirit. I am convinced that it is grace abounding that God might work through each person who builds, plants, comforts, and even dies so that others might live. Do not be afraid of those who can kill the body, said Jesus, who knew that the path of discipleship would not be easy for those who followed him. He also knew that fear is a door through which evil can tempt believers to put their faith and trust in anything that can give them security, wealth, and power and, thus, turn them away from God. Those who kill others wantonly for the sake of their own gain, who oppress peoples to increase power, and who take advantage of misfortune to increase their wealth have succumbed to evil already. Do not be afraid, Jesus says, because God watches over us and, in the words of the psalmist, is our champion. The people who run into burning buildings, spend precious time to help rebuild disaster areas and look for survivors, who stand in defiance of tyranny, oppression, and injustice, and who give what they have to help others know this and live it out already. 2017 Liguori Publications, One Liguori Drive, Liguori, MO 63057. Find prayers and catechetical resources at: www. cccb. ca Choose Catholic Education - Register now for 2017-18: For over a century, Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools (GSCS) has offered Catholic education for all who choose that for their children. Catholic education in Saskatchewan has never simply been schools for Catholics. A recent court decision (and subsequent appeals) has created some uncertainty for many families. We can be certain of two things: GSCS will continue to be a welcoming community nurturing intellectual, physical, emotional and spiritual growth of our students; and provincial funding for both Catholic and non-catholic students will be in place for the foreseeable future. Register at your local school for the 2017-18 school year! www.gscs.ca/schools Please consider donating to a legal fund for a Catholic education court appeal - The eight Catholic school boards in the province are appealing a Theodore court case ruling that would remove funding for non-catholic students in Catholic schools. The boards are seeking donations to help cover the cost of the appeal. See: https://www.catholicedspirit.ca or call the local Catholic school division at (306) 659-7000 for more information. Dear parents/guardians and the GSCS community; Since my last communication to all of our families regarding the Theodore court case ruling, there have been significant developments that I hope will bring a certain degree of stability for you with respect to your educational choice. First, and most importantly, on May 19, the Government of Saskatchewan joined the Saskatchewan Catholic School Boards Association in appealing the court decision. The appeal process is expected to take several years. The government s use of the notwithstanding clause of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms will stand for a minimum of five years. Unanimous support in the Legislative Assembly (including the opposition NDP) is a strong indication that you, as parents and the first educators of your children, will maintain your choice in education for the foreseeable future. Second, all eight Catholic boards in the province have worked together to explore how we may fund the appeal. As important as appealing the decision is, it puts added financial pressure on boards as we try very hard to limit the impact of this year s budget on classrooms. Boards of education are struggling with significant budget restrictions for next year, so the eight boards have joined together to ask for your help to defray the costs. I invite you to help by financially supporting the appeal. The initial target is $125,000 which addresses the costs to the Saskatchewan Court of Appeals. Should the case go to the Supreme Court of Canada, raising an additional $125,000 would be necessary. Donating is a tangible way for you to support Catholic education. To put this in perspective, a $3 donation for each of the approximately 40,000 students who attend Catholic schools in the province would achieve our initial target. Additional details and information on how to donate, including an online donation form, can be found at https://www.catholicedspirit.ca. Tax receipts can be issued for donations. Thank you for considering this request. We have been offering Catholic education (not just education to Catholics) for over 100 years. By the grace of God and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we have weathered many storms. I have faith and hope that this current situation will be no different. I also hope this news eases any lingering uncertainty about the ability of people of other faith traditions to attend Catholic schools. I assure you that anyone who chooses Catholic education for your children regardless of your religious affiliation or reasons for that choice is welcome at our 50 schools in the fall and for many years to come. Thank you all for your continued support, and please continue to pray for Catholic education in Canada. Blessing in Christ, Diane Boyko, Board of Education Chair Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools
