Once again, this year we have seen tremendous growth in our Assembly and participation. We ve had fallouts for deceased Sir Knights, the activities of the Bishops, and clergy, and local church activities. If you did not get an opportunity to participate, I encourage you to get back to being active this coming fraternal year. We are truly the visible part of the Knights of Columbus and support the Church. Our Assembly is filled with very active Councils that do a lot to support Fr. McGivney s vision to support the Church and Family. This year I would encourage each Council to share more of their activities by submitting at least one picture or article of the activities that the do each month. These activities will be highlighted in our monthly newsletter for all to see. This year we continue with the opportunity to do our usual fund raising activities and that allowed us to move forward and participate in contributions on needy projects and projects that will be facing us in the new fiscal year. However, we need to increase the number of Sir Knights that participate so the same Knights don t get burnt out on serving. We know that the 4 th Degree is not a fund raising organization, as the Councils, but it does feel good to be able to do our part to support the church and families without having to ask for more money from the membership. In the coming year, we will continue to have few opportunities to participate in fund raising and we hope that you will join in the activities. Our new leaders will need your prayer, support and participation to continue to make Assembly 1099 more visible. Our activities in Pro-Life activities has increased, however I challenge everyone to earn their ACE Wings award for participation in five (5) or more Public Pro-Life activities in a 12 month period. We really need to become more visible and add participation in this area. The last meeting of the fraternal year will be the Installation of Officers. This meeting will be at the same time as our regularly scheduled Assembly Meeting. The installation will be held at Santa Cruz in Buda on July 7, 2011. All 4th Degree members and wives should attend. The attire is Dress Tux and Social Baldric. Dinner will be provided. Price to be determined. Vivat Jesus! The Sir Knight News Page 3 Supreme Court rejects challenge to "under God" in Pledge of Allegiance Knights of Columbus waged successful defense on East and West Coast cases June 14, 2011 - Flag Day (NEW HAVEN, CONN.) - The United States Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal of a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the Pledge of Allegiance, thus ending a seven year battle involving two separate cases, one originating in California and the other in New Hampshire. The Knights of Columbus, represented by the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, played a key role in defending the Pledge as a "defendant intervenor" in both cases. "The Knights of Columbus is proud to have played a major role in successfully defending the constitutionality of the words 'under God' in the Pledge of Allegiance," Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson said. "We were instrumental in persuading Congress to add those words to the Pledge in 1954, and they express a fundamental belief that we have held as a nation since our founding, that we 'are endowed by our creator with certain unalienable rights.' The notion that this somehow violates the First Amendment has now been soundly rejected by both the First and Ninth Circuit Courts of Appeal, and the Supreme Court has now allowed both decisions to stand. It is a victory for common sense." The Ninth Circuit upheld the constitutionality of the Pledge in March 2010 and the Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal of the California case in March 2011. The First Circuit upheld the constitutionality of the Pledge in November 2011 and the Supreme Court denied certiorari in that case yesterday, June 13, 2011. Knights of Columbus Communications Department <communications@kofc.org> T HANK YOU Gentlemen, Thank you so much for the great communication with this Office and turnout of Knights at the ordination! I especially want to tip my hat to the men who stood for the entire Ordination Mass. I know that was a sacrifice yet such a wonderful sign of service to all who attended. Again, many thanks. Peace, Max Office of Worship

Page 4 Volume 7, Issue 12 Assumption Cemetery Mass Fallout May 30 th, 2010 Assumption Cemetery Mass Fallout attended by well over 50 Sir Knights. Assumption Fallout was a joint effort with at least one member of the Knights of Peter Claver also in attendance. The mass also ended with the presentation of several Chalices engraved with the names of fallen Knights this past year.

The Sir Knight News Page 5 Knights In Action As Knights we know that Fr. Michael J. McGivney s vision included providing-for the needs of the families of our fallen brethren. The Knights of Columbus has stayed true to Fr. McGivney s vision. Bart Botta was a member of Council 10209 until his passing. His wife Sue is still connected to the Councl. Sue, is limited in movement and connected to an air supply, had a dream to be able to walk out to her back yard again to plant a garden. Well the brother Knights of Council 10209, kept the vision of Fr. McGivney by coming to the aid. It started with a trip to Home Depot and multiple Knights and friends. One can see the transition, as we go from the materials, to a beautiful above ground planter that Sue can access. The planter build took less than 3 hours. The ramp build took a little longer and required the help of a contractor friend of a fellow Knight. The smiles you see on our faces below are both for a job well done and the fulfillment that one gets from giving to others. Isn t it Great to be a Knight!!!
