Soryelling in 21s Cenury is all abou how soryelling is changing as a resul of modificaions in echnology, and way echnology flucuaes impacs way we experience media, Chris Hansen, associae professor and film and digial media division direcor, said. The course will also involve discussions on negaive influences of new echnology on filming mehods, devices and conceps in soryelling. There are differen agendas concerning minds of Hollywood. Jenkins, laying ou sis of his new book, Laying Down Sword: Why We Can Ignore Bible s Violen Verses, said se passages should be read as a warning for Jewish people o remain faihful o God, rar han a license o commi aggression. Where people are reading Bible wrongly, in my view, is y are reading Bible absoluely differenly from way i s wrien, Jenkins said. How i s wrien is herem hrea... is mean o apply no o foreign people, bu o Israeli people mselves. If you beray monoism, errible hings will happen o you. Approaching ex wihou rying o undersand message auhors were rying o porray has misled some Chrisian scholars, Jenkins said. He said many acs of hisorical violence, including 1994 mass killings in Rwanda, have been misakenly jusified on religious grounds. Opinion THURSDAY FEBRUARY 9, 2012 2 Baylor Laria BU s dorms deserve proposed renovaions Ediorial Before consrucion begins, re are some hings o consider as Baylor adminisraion addresses is housing siuaion going forward. A las Thursday s Suden Senae meeing, Senae voed o recommend renovaing five universiy dorms Collins, Penland, Norh Russell, Souh Russell and Marin. While plans aren final, y will likely call for adding addiional suden lounge and sudy spaces, improving bahrooms, replacing floors and ceilings and improving echnological capaciies of residence halls. The plan would be implemened over nex 15 o 20 years. The Senae overruled a veo by suden body presiden Zach Rogers, who opposed bill because of cos of adding Wi-Fi hroughou dorms. Rogers said he suppored bill bu was concerned abou esimaed $750,000 o $1 million needed for Wi-Fi in dorms. We agree wih Suden Senae. Baylor s larges dorms are due for upgrades, and re is a reason some of m aren used for summer camps when Baylor wans o pu is bes foo forward for prospecive sudens. Bu before consrucion begins, re are some hings o consider as Baylor addresses is housing siuaion. The bigges issue Baylor needs o fix before upgrading dorms is making sure re are enough opions for incoming sudens who are required o spend ir freshman year on campus. Wha good does an improved sudy room do if sudens have o live in ha sudy room because of excess occupancy? Baylor has already moved o add one more dorm via Eas Village projec. Bu pruden projecions are necessary o ensure ha even if suden body increases over nex 15 years, big five dorms won be overcrowded. Assuming sudy rooms will acually be available o sudens in renovaed dorms, Baylor should also consider plan s ime frame and is impac on dorms appeal. The universiy has o ensure ha upgrades done now won need addiional improvemens afer 15- o 20-year process is finished. In or words, if firs se of renovaions comes in 2014 and Baylor complees final pieces of plan in 2034, 2014 upgrades mus sill be on par wih hose of 2034. Tha migh prove a difficul ask, as a brand new sudy room migh be much more aesically appealing han a 20-year-old sudy room. If Baylor sees his as a poenial problem, perhaps universiy should consider a smaller window of ime o complee se renovaions, like five or 10 years. Finally, echnology needs o ake prioriy in upgrading se dorms. Wih increased usage of smarphones and ables, neir of which can uilize Erne-only Inerne connecion currenly available in dorm rooms, Wi-Fi is absoluely necessary for fuure generaions of Bears. If Baylor wans o consider iself on cuing edge of echnology, re is no excuse for sudens o lack same wireless Inerne opion ha has exised for more han a decade. Baylor would ake a much-needed sep wih se proposed renovaions. To deem upgrades a success, hough, y have o be compleed in a imely fashion and in sudens bes ineress. To risk parking fine, or be lae o class: Tha is quesion Le me sar ou by saying ha I am a rampan parking violaor. Seriously, I have paid Baylor nearly $500 in fees over pas four years. I ge m because I knowingly park illegally. I openly acknowledge my parking infracions and used o accep m as jus par of Baylor experience, bu one recen even has pushed me over edge. Early las semeser I received a $40 icke for parking for 20 minues in 45-minue Sarbucks parking. I walked ou o my car afer siing in Sarbucks enjoying a cup of coffee o find one of parking aendans wriing me a icke. When I explained o him ha I was in Sarbucks, he demanded o see my receip. I didn have one because i never occurred o me ha I would have o prove a some poin ha I was drinking coffee, so he issued me a icke. A his poin I migh have los my emper. I seemed ha aendan was finding some perverse pleasure in waching me rave. He almos appeared o enjoy small amoun of power he had over my parking record. I hope my experience is no ypical, bu a person would be hard pressed o find a rouine Rob Bradfield Saff wrier commuer ha hasn had some sor of run-in wih Parking Services. I s no ha we enjoy geing ickeed, someimes in excess of $40 ha I paid, bu i s ofen unavoidable. Many professors have absence or ardiness policies ha require sudens o ge o class quickly, which can be hard when closes parking is a 10-minue walk. Baylor, inenionally or uninenionally, has forced sudens o choose beween making i o class or violaing is asinine parking policy a siuaion worhy of a Joseph Heller novel. I s no secre ha Baylor wans more sudens on campus. The second goal of Baylor 2012 explicily saes ha Baylor wans o creae a ruly residenial campus. To ha end, Baylor has buil pseudo-aparmens like The Arbors for upperclassmen, creaed LLCs ha require sudens o live on campus for wo years, recenly bough one of larges off-campus aparmen complexes and are planning large-scale renovaions of Big 5 dorms. The reason for his is fairly ransparen Baylor wans o exer more conrol over wha sudens spend ir ime doing. Sudens ha spend all ir ime on campus are much less likely o ge involved in hings ha Sourn Bapiss don approve of like drinking, premarial sex and Mehodism. This ineres in suden behavior wouldn be a problem if i didn creae hardships for res of us. The las ime Baylor go rid of parking i was because y wan o creae a more pedesrian campus. And y have for mos par; I hink amoun of suden/vehicle ineracion has significanly decreased. Wha s odd abou his is ha y haven done anyhing furr o encourage sudens off campus o walk or ride a bike o class. Baylor exercises a large amoun of influence over neighborhoods around Baylor and could easily consruc more bike lanes, improve sidewalks or encourage aparmen complexes o insall beer bike racks. As i sands mos cycliss have o ride in sree, and many areas around Baylor don have adequae sidewalks for dedicaed pedesrians. Baylor s bus line also falls shor of mark. Sophomore year I made an earnes aemp o use bus line in order o avoid parking siuaion. The buses ran a odd inervals, and if y were even a lile bi early i was easy o miss. Unforunaely, mos of ime buses were lae. My sop was fars away on longes roue, so average ride was generally 20 minues or more, which was incredibly unhelpful since my desinaion was on or side of campus. For sudens ha live away from bus roues or have classes laer han 5:30 p.m. aking bus can be impracical, so naurally y are forced o drive and face parking sysem. Sudens ha feel ha y have been ickeed wrongly have 14 days o file an appeal, and afer filing an appeal, y have o show up o a Suden Cour meeing a 8:30 a.m. on Mondays. The appeals are addressed on a firscome, firs-served basis, so re s no guaranee ha cour will ever even hear your case. The fac ha courroom is ucked away in an obscure par of Bill Daniel Suden Cener means ha firs ime plainiffs can have rouble finding i and end up wih a place a boom of lis. Unlike criminal cours in Texas, judges ha si on Suden Cour are all appoined. Baylor also differs in ha plainiffs are presumed guily and mus prove ir innocence. This means ha sudens wrongly ickeed have virually no chance of winning a case, and re s no real way o change sysem. The suden governmen has only as much power as universiy allows, our judiciary is a kangaroo cour and sudens are lef wih no real way o address grievances. I sincerely hope I m wrong, bu when you look a i all a once, i seems like Baylor is acively making i difficul for sudens who commue o campus. I can say and won make any speculaion as o wher reasoning is financial or o encourage sudens o live more fully inside Baylor Bubble. I will say ha a beer soluion for our parking woes would be o inves in reliable public ransporaion ha also includes Waco communiy, creaing a safer way for sudens o bike and walk o class, and resricing number of parking ags given o sudens ha already live on campus. Bu since I m no a regen or an adminisraor or a suden poliician, I have really only one place o ake my concerns. So, Judge Sarr, I know ha you re ired from kicking Aggie bu and holding Big 12 oger wih sheer srengh of will, bu if you ge chance, could you maybe sep in and sor ou his parking hing for us? The or sudens and I would really appreciae i. Rob Bradfield is a senior journalism news-ediorial major from Waco and is a saff wrier for Laria. THURSDAY FEBRUARY 9, 2012 News Baylor Laria 3 Geing pious wih a lile help from your friends By Meghan Hendrickson Reporer A Baylor sudy has found ha friendships wih fellow churchgoers have sronges effec on a person s belief in church docrine, even more han ir gender, geographic locaion, denominaional background, level of educaion or income level. The sudy was compleed in Augus by Samuel Sroope, a Ph.D. candidae in sociology. Social Neworks and Religion: The Role of Congregaional Social Embeddedness in Religious Belief and Pracice is name of a sudy researching relaionship beween an individual s religiosiy and ir paricipaion in church social groups. Religiosiy refers o one s level of devoion o his or her beliefs. Sroope said his sudy showed resuls significan for Baylor sudens. Many Baylor sudens are religiously acive, Sroope said. So if a Baylor suden wans o mainain his or her faih during ir college years, y migh wan o hink abou who ir friends are. Dr. Kevin Doughery, associae professor of sociology, said Sroope s research also has implicaions for broader church congregaions. I is no enough o pu on big Sunday shows and arac huge crowds, Doughery said. To forge disciples, congregaions need o link worshipers o one anor in personal, meaningful ways. To complee his sudy, Sroope said he used daa from Baylor Religion Survey, a naional survey of aduls from various denominaions regarding ir religious beliefs and pracices. I analyzed daa from survey and found ha when people draw a greaer proporion of ir friends from ir own congregaion, ha s associaed wih higher religiosiy, Sroope said. I is no enough o pu on big Sunday shows and arac huge crowds. To forge disciples, congregaions need o link worshipers o one anor in personal, meaningful ways. Dr. Kevin Doughery Associae professor of sociology Sroope said his ineres in his sudy sems from ors research on religious culs. In 1960s and 70s, sociey had a fear of religious culs, and sociologiss were curious as o why a person would join one, Sroope said. Sroope said when researchers asked members of religious culs why y joined, people would ofen say y were drawn o group s ology. People would alk abou how his docrine abou such and such was so aracive, Sroope said. However, when sociologiss observed process of how people joined culs, Sroope said a person s accepance of ology followed joining group. People firs formed friendships, and laer y would adop ology ha was in line wih ir friends, Sroope said. As a young graduae suden, Sroope wondered if his discovery would apply o or groups. He never found a naional sudy covering issue, so Sroope began his own in 2009. Religiosiy can be measured in hundreds of ways, bu Sroope focused on five specific crieria: behavioral measures, which were analyzed by paricipaion in boh church aciviies like choir or Sunday school and devoional aciviies like prayer or scripure reading; belief componen, measured by asking if individuals had absolue belief in supernaural eniies like God, heaven, hell, angels, demons or Saan; lierary perspecive, esed by asking paricipans if y hold a lieral view of Bible; and religious exclusiviy, or how narrow heaven s gaes are, Sroope said. While Sroope s sudy ignored causaliy, meaning he can prove a person s church friends specifically cause m o adop cerain religious beliefs and behaviors, Sroope did find a posiive correlaion beween wo. Mos of i comes from way we see world as African-Americans, and way we see world as bi-racial Americans, Key said. Key and Peele has also given duo a chance o explore a lile known face of black comedy ha y call nerdy black guy. I m happy o say ha resul, his book The Triumph of Chrisianiy: How Jesus Movemen Became World s Larges Religion, succeeds in ha respec. The book is, quie simply, excellen. The Triumph of Chrisianiy is quie possibly bes nonficion book I ve read his year. The only book even close is Michael Lewis Moneyball, bu given ha i discusses baseball saisics and The Triumph of Chrisianiy documens hisory of world s mos popular religion, I hink Sark s book is cerainly more meaningful. The Triumph of Chrisianiy has cerainly made more of an impac on my life han Moneyball did. I picked up book expecing i o be an exploraion of Chrisian ology. While re is some of ha sporadically hroughou book, Sark s purpose is more o answer a relaively imporan quesion: how did an obscure Jewish movemen become so big? Wher you re religious or no, you ll find ha his is indeed an imporan quesion. Why is i ha so many people around world believe in Chris? Tha s no somehing ha happens on acciden for some reason, wher you believe in Chris or no, you have o admi ha his message resonaes wih people. Sark sars book ou before Chris, focusing heavily on religious elemens a play in Roman empire and he shows ha his was a group of people who were desperae for some kind of meaningful belief sysem. In a world wih high infan moraliy, shor life-spans and widespread povery, Roman ciizens were looking for some reason o no simply give up hope. One of mos ineresing conceps ha Sark presens in book is idea of divine accommodaion, which can be summarized as belief ha a divine power will shape is message and delivery of ha message in a way ha resonaes wih people who are expeced o believe in i. In case of Chrisianiy, re was a significan build-up o Chris sory; idea ha an allpowerful God would send his son o die publicly in order o wash away sins of mankind is somehing ha resonaed wih Roman ciizens and, as Sark poins ou, is sill resonaing wih more han a billion people around world. Sark goes hrough human hisory explaining how his message coninued o resonae wih people and also wasn responsible for many of negaive hings ha people associae wih Chrisianiy. For example, Sark goes hrough Dark Ages and shows why y weren dark a all. They weren a backwards ime in which people weren developing a all; y were a ime ha led o major developmens in ar, engineering and even somehing ha non-chrisians can embrace: developmen of modern capialism. Tha s jus one of many opics ha Sark akes on darker areas of Chrisian hisory aren safe from Sark s analysis eir. I s ineresing reading book because wha Sark says goes agains wha you may have been augh in classes, bu when you look a evidence ha Sark presens in book, i s hard o argue wih his conclusions. The Triumph of Chrisianiy is no a book by a Chrisian rying o force his beliefs down hroa of his readers. Sark s claims are well-researched and well-documened his is very much a hisorical work. As srange of a comparison as his is o make, i s much like Judd Apaow s errible film Funny People. Many people hough ha a movie abou comedians would be funny, bu i was acually a drama and dramaic paricipans jus happened o comedians. Much like Funny People, jus because opic maer is a religion, The Triumph of Chrisianiy is no a religious book; i is a book abou hisory of a religion. There s a big difference beween wo. Unlike Funny People, however, The Triumph of Chrisianiy is worh your ime. I don care if you are mos devou Chrisian or Chrisopher Hichens, you owe i o yourself o read his book. Undersanding hisorical conex ha surrounded Jesus and rise of religion afer he lef earh is somehing ha every lierae person owes i o mselves o do. I can cie very few books ha have had as much of a meaningful impac on me as The Triumph of Chrisianiy has. Nearly every Chrisian face of my life has been placed in a new conex hanks o his book.
