FOURTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST August 25-26, 2018 AS WE GATHER They re perfect! Stain-resistant! Wrinkle-free! Easy-care! Not only are the pants good-looking, but they re also functional. While store catalogs may use these terms to grab your attention and sell their products, the Bible uses similar words to proclaim the wonderful news of God s free grace for you! Jesus has redeemed you by His blood in order to present the church to Himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish (Ephesians 5:27). Like a bride beautifully adorned and awaiting her bridegroom, we anticipate the final coming of our Lord Jesus, even as we today receive Him who comes to us in His body and blood. Let us join together and give praise to the One who has declared us to be spotless! HYMN My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less LSB 575 Stand CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination. P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, 1

renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As an ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. SERVICE OF THE WORD INTROIT Ps. 26:1 2, 6 7; antiphon: Ps. 26:8 P O LORD, I love the habitation of your house and the place where your glory dwells. C Vindicate me, O LORD, for I have walked in my integrity, and I have trusted in the LORD without wavering. P Prove me, O LORD, and try me; test my heart and my mind. C I wash my hands in innocence and go around your altar, O LORD, proclaiming thanksgiving aloud, and telling all your wondrous deeds. C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P O LORD, I love the habitation of your house and the place where your glory dwells. KYRIE LSB 152 P In peace let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, have mercy. P For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, have mercy. P For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord. 2

C Lord, have mercy. P For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, have mercy. P Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. HYMN OF PRAISE: This Is the Feast LSB 155 C This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain, whose blood set us free to be people of God. This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Power, riches, wisdom and strength, and honor, blessing, and glory are His. This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Sing with all the people of God, and join in the hymn of all creation. Blessing, honor, glory, and might be to God and the Lamb forever. Amen. This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. For the Lamb who was slain has begun His reign. Alleluia. This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray. Almighty and merciful God, defend Your Church from all false teaching and error that Your faithful people may confess You to 3

be the only true God and rejoice in Your good gifts of life and salvation; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Sit [Sunday] SCHOOL CHILDREN'S CHOIR OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 29:11 19 11And the vision of all this has become to you like the words of a book that is sealed. When men give it to one who can read, saying, Read this, he says, I cannot, for it is sealed. 12 And when they give the book to one who cannot read, saying, Read this, he says, I cannot read. 13 And the Lord said: Because this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men, 14 therefore, behold, I will again do wonderful things with this people, with wonder upon wonder; and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the discernment of their discerning men shall be hidden. 15 Ah, you who hide deep from the LORD your counsel, whose deeds are in the dark, and who say, Who sees us? Who knows us? 16 You turn things upside down! Shall the potter be regarded as the clay, that the thing made should say of its maker, He did not make me ; or the thing formed say of him who formed it, He has no understanding? 17 Is it not yet a very little while until Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field shall be regarded as a forest? 18 In that day the deaf shall hear the words of a book, and out of their gloom and darkness the eyes of the blind shall see. 4

19 The meek shall obtain fresh joy in the LORD, and the poor among mankind shall exult in the Holy One of Israel. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. EPISTLE Ephesians 5:22 33 22Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. 25Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. 28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30because we are members of his body. 31 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. 33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Stand COMMON ALLELUIA AND VERSE LSB 156 C Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia, alleluia. 5

HOLY GOSPEL Mark 7:1 13 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the seventh chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. 1When the Pharisees gathered to [Jesus], with some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem, 2 they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. 3 (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands, holding to the tradition of the elders, 4 and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as the washing of cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.) 5 And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands? 6 And he said to them, Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; 7 in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men. 8You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men. 9And he said to them, You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! 10 For Moses said, Honor your father and your mother ; and, Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die. 11 But you say, If a man tells his father or his mother, Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban (that is, given to God) 12 then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, 13 thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. Sit HYMN All Christians Who Have Been Baptized LSB 596 SERMON "Washed Clean" Mark 7:8-9 6

Stand [Saturday] NICENE CREED C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come. Amen. [Sunday] APOSTLES CREED C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. 7

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. P For the Christian Church, both here and throughout the world, that, united in the redeeming blood of Christ, we share the saving Gospel wherever we are and to whomever we meet, let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, send us forth to share Your Word. P For the living out of our vocations, that all who are blessed with callings in our homes, in our workplaces, in our larger society, and in the Church faithfully represent our Savior by what we say and do, especially bless our teachers and staff at the beginning of another school year, let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, help us to serve You by serving others. P For our congregation as we continue the process of Calling a Pastor, let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, grant Your blessing. P For all public servants who selflessly serve others, including the members of our armed forces and law enforcement, that they 8

would be defended by our mighty God and take refuge in His merciful care, let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, be their shield and defense. P For all who suffer in heart, mind, and body, [especially...], that they receive healing mercies from above, let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, restore and heal those we name before You. P For these and all other concerns that are upon our hearts and minds, that our gracious Father answer us for the sake of Christ, let us pray to the Lord. C Lord, we ask for this grace in Jesus name. Amen. Sit [Sunday] INSTALLATION OF TEACHERS AND STAFF OF ST. Stand OFFERTORY LSB 159 C What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits to me? I will offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving and will call on the name of the Lord. I will take the cup of salvation and will call on the name of the Lord. I will pay my vows to the Lord now in the presence of all His people, in the courts of the Lord's house, in the midst of you, O Jerusalem. Sunday s service will continue on pg. 11 with the Lord s Prayer. 9

SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT PREFACE LSB 160 P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Lift up your hearts. C We lift them to the Lord. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C It is right to give Him thanks and praise. P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: SANCTUS LSB 161 C Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of pow'r and might: Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna. Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING LSB 161 P Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the 10

marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. LORD'S PRAYER LSB 162 P Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Sunday s service will continue on pg. 12 with the Benediction.
