JAMES STUDY CHAPTER 1:19-21 MEDIA REFERENCE NUMBER SM-297 MAY 30, 1998 THE TITLE OF THE MESSAGE: THE THEME OF THE BOOK: James 1:22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, - deceiving yourselves. INTRODUCTION: To The Text vv. 19-21 19 Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; 20 for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God. 21 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. The Summation Sentence Verses 19-27 are made of three divisions vv. 19-21 Practicing the Word of Truth vv. 22-25 Sharing the Word of Truth vv. 26-27 In these three divisions, James sets forth before the believer a series of tests, examinations really, that confirms or denies the fact that we are truly believers who have become followers

Jesus Warned Against Spectator Christianity Luke 6:44 "For every tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. Jude Warned Against Spectator Christianity Jude 1:12 These are spots in your love feasts, while they feast with you without fear, serving only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried about by the winds; late autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, pulled up by the roots; By the way, do you know what you call believers who have become followers of Christ? - Christians! You can be a believer in God and you can say that you follow Christ... but until you take your belief and put it into action, in day-to-day living, - you ll never be a Christian The fact of the matter is you ll wind up missing heaven by about 18 inches (the distance between your head and your heart) Religion among men is of the head - Relationship with God is in the heart. One talks about it - The other does it James 1:22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, - deceiving yourselves. (In the heart) Matthew 7:22 "Many will say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?' 23 "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!' Spiritual Deception will take, or has taken already, the vast majority of humanity to the grave!

1.) The Word of God Produces Our New Life vv. 19 Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; a.) By Recreating Us in Christ Therefore, my beloved brethren vv. 19a Verse 18 Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we b.) By Instructing Us about Christ vv. 19b let every man be swift to hear 7 times in the Revelation Revelation 2:7 "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. * swift to hear grk 5036 tachus (takh-oos'); positioned and eager to receive. We are to listen twice as much as we speak The Word of God Produces Our New Life c.) By Making Us Like Christ slow to speak, slow to wrath; vv. 19c This is so much like the nature of Jesus Christ When you look at the Word - You re Looking at Jesus 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 4 Love (Jesus) suffers long and is kind; love (Jesus) does not envy; love (Jesus) does not parade itself, (Jesus) is not puffed up; 5 does not behave rudely, (Jesus) does not seek its own, is not provoked, (Jesus) thinks no evil; 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but (Jesus) rejoices in the truth; 7 (Jesus) bears all things, (Jesus) believes all things, (Jesus) hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love(Jesus) never fails. Romans 8:29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn It s hard to Receive the Word of Truth when your mouth is always moving the words we use how we use them what we desire to accomplish with the words we use 2.) The Word of God Directs Our New Life vv. 20 for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

The Word of God Directs Our New Life a.) By Showing us a More Excellent Way to Live for the wrath of man vv. 20a If a man is slow to hear and swift to speak, he will naturally be swift to wrath * wrath grk 3709 orge (or-gay'); a seething human anger, human indignation, a burning human vengeance. A slow, seething anger that schemes and plans vengeance I don't care if it takes me the rest of my life - I ll get him - if it s the last thing I do It is of Demonic Origins - The Fallen Human Nature Matthew 16:23 But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men." A Subcutaneous Wrath which will deceive you At the end of the age God will take man s actions, the governments, each individual, our judges Psalm 76:10 Surely your wrath against men brings you praise, Genesis 18:25 Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?" God s Love is Rarely Understood Perfect Love Instructs, it Directs, it Guides, it Provides, it disciplines, it rebukes, it corrects, it judges The Word of God Directs Our New Life b.) Luke 15:1-2 1 Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him. 2 And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them. 3.) The Word of God Develops Our New Life vv. 21 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. a.) Matthew 13:15-16 15 For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, so that I should heal them.' 16 "But blessed are your eyes for they see, and your ears for they hear; * overflow grk 4052 perisseuo (per-is-syoo'-o); to super amount, to the point of excessiveness. Not Being Deceived

Matthew 7:15-23 15 "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 "You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17 "Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 "A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 "Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 "Therefore by their fruits you will know them. 21 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 "Many will say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?' 23 "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!' 2 Corinthians 4:2 and now, we have renounced secret and shameful ways of the past; Colossians 3:5-7 5 Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, 7 in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them. Our Politically Correct Society is Theologically Offensive in the name of tolerance You re a this & you re a that - live with it! This is Hope 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God. The Word of God Develops Our New Life b.) Because we possess the Power to become New and receive with meekness the implanted word, vv. 21b

IS INTERNALIZING THE BIBLE * implanted grk 1721 emphutos (em'-foo-tos); from 1722 and a derivative of 5453; implanted (figuratively): to be grafted in to -- causing germination after it has been grafted in to what once was foreign Engrafted Being grafted in to the word, we become one with the word, then the word reproduces in us its truth, which springs forth into right living The Seed, The Word Matthew 13:1-9 1 On the same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the sea. 2 And great multitudes were gathered together to Him, so that He got into a boat and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore. 3 Then He spoke many things to them in parables, saying: "Behold, a sower went out to sow. 4 "And as he sowed, some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds came and devoured them. 5 "Some fell on stony places, where they did not have much earth; and they immediately sprang up because they had no depth of earth. 6 "But when the sun was up they were scorched, and because they had no root they withered away. 7 "And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choked them. 8 "But others fell on good ground and yielded a crop: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. 9 "He who has ears to hear, let him hear!" Jesus Compares the Word to Seed the seed germinates - the Seed has power - the seeds will grow Matthew 13:18-23 18 "Therefore hear the parable of the sower: 19 "When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it, then the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the wayside. 20 "But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21 "yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles. 22 "Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful. 23 "But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty." Go out to your driveway at home

You ll find a sprout breaking through the concrete Silently / slowly - - but noticeably The True Evidence of Salvation is fruit Consider the Fruit that has come from the ministry of the Thief on the Cross. Saved for a couple of hours at best - the untold millions who have had death bed conversions A Changed Life Manifested by various and noticeable characteristics of the new life which leads to winning souls Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, which leads to holy living Romans 6:22 But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. which leads to sharing possessions Romans 15:28 Therefore, when I have performed this and have sealed to them this fruit, I shall go by way of you to Spain. which leads to deeper knowledge Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. which leads to good works Colossians 1:10 that you may have a walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;

which leads to a worshipful life Hebrews 13:15 Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name. Engrafting - Implanting ALL CHURCH NOTICE let's begin today a scripture memory verse for the week James 1:19 Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; John 15:1-9 (16) 1 "I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 "Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 "You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 "Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. 5 "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. 6 "If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 "If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 8 "By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples... (16) "You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you. For the Christian, It is possible for the enemy of our souls to trip us up by his trickery but it is impossible for the enemy to deceive us into walking away from Christ Psalm 37:23-24 23 If the LORD delights in a man's way, he makes his steps firm; 24 though he stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand.
