February 10, 2013 WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR LENT? Recently a friend of mine gave me a very interesting book. It was one of those self-help volumes and I thought I d take a look at it. I must say I was surprised. Immediately it struck me that the author s idea was quite Catholic. He was saying in a secular context what the Church has been saying to us for two thousand years. You may remember how we heard about it: you have a free will. Certain segments of our society have been trying to convince us otherwise that we are determined and really should not worry too much about sin and personal failure. We ve heard all the excuses: It s a new world; Everybody is doing it; Peer Pressure; Things have changed. The reality, of course, is that things have indeed changed but Jesus Christ has not and will not. The Letter to the Hebrews puts it so well: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. (Heb. 13:8) This coming Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. Sometimes Lent is referred to as the Great Retreat of the Church, a solemn and holy time to prepare for the Resurrection of Christ. I have a question for you and for me. Will this Lent make any difference in our lives? I hope it will and I have a few suggestions. Just for a moment forget about past Lents and the spiritually disappointing results. It may be, of course, that you are a spiritual giant but if you are like the rest of us, here are the tips. Keep Focused: The main aim is to get closer to Jesus Christ. A good way of doing this is reading the Gospel of St. Mark as a Lenten project. Even if you read as little as five minutes a day, it would be a great step in the right direction. Mark is the shortest of the Gospels (only 16 chapters) and would provide a fine starting point. If you read only half a chapter a day, you would finish way before Lent is over. Holy Mass: There is no better Lenten practice than attending daily Mass. Even if you can only make it once or twice a week, it would be well worth the effort. You would be meeting Jesus Himself in the Holy Eucharist. I can t think of anything better than that. Remember we have four daily Masses: 6:30 and 9:00 AM, 12:15 and 5:30 PM. Confession: You all know the importance of receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation or Penance. It is available here on Saturdays from 12:30 to 1:30 PM and from 4:00 to 5:00 PM before the Saturday evening Mass. Confession is available in the Rectory every weekday from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM. You may go either anonymously at the front door confessional or face to face in the office. Happy Lent! I encourage you, in this Year of Faith, to take advantage of all the opportunities we offer here at St. Aidan. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald

Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: On February 13 th, the Church will enter once again into the forty days of Lent. From Ash Wednesday until the Mass of the Lord s Supper, we will follow the ancient and more recent customs of our Church, journeying with Christ toward Easter. In this Year of Faith, this Lent has an added urgency because the faith that sets us free is often ignored, ridiculed, denied and even attacked. Our response must always be to pray to God to give us the strength to increase our faith and so become ever more faithful witnesses to God s love and His presence in a world that is becoming ever more indifferent to Him and His Son s message of salvation. The Bishops of the United States this past November issued an Exhortation on the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation, God s Gift of Forgiveness, which can be found at www.usccb.org as well as on our diocesan website, www.drvc.org. It is brief and comes from our hearts. I make that message mine to you at the beginning of this Lent. When the Risen Christ greets the apostles in the upper room saying Peace be with You, He gives them the extraordinary command: Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them. As He did for them, He tells us bishops and priests to do for you in His name. And that is exactly what is offered to each and every one of us in the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. The Church sees confession as so important that she requires that every Catholic go to Confession at least once a year. It is important for us to hear this again today when too many have let the practice of Confession fall out of their lives. In this Year of Faith and in this time, when Pope Benedict calls us to participate in a New Evangelization of our lives, our Church and our society, he also tells us that The New Evangelization begins in the confessional. In our Diocese we have long had the grace-filled practice of dedicating the Monday of Holy Week to making priests available in the confessionals of every parish from 3:00PM to 9:00PM. Our neighbors in Brooklyn and New York now join us in this. Some years ago I wrote a letter to all of you on the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. I urged our priests to offer the sacrament more often than Saturdays before the Vigil Mass and as frequently as the priest could so that the sacrament would be more available for us all. I repeat that now with an urgent prayer to God that all of us, the faithful of this Diocese, experience the healing and freeing merciful life of God through this supreme sacrament of forgiveness and renewal of life. Pope Benedict reminds us that faith and the Christian life is not a theory or a lofty idea, it is an encounter with a person Who gives life a new horizon and a decisive dimension. This Lent I pray that, whatever our Lenten works of prayer and fasting and works of charity are, they might be purified and made ever more beautiful from hearts cleansed by the grace of God s merciful love in the sacrament of forgiveness, His saving love poured forth into the world through the death and resurrection of His Son. Faithfully yours in Christ, Bishop of Rockville Centre

Suggestions for the Month of February 2013 Lent begins this month. Will you manage to watch one hour with Jesus and, in that hour, to grow closer to Him in prayer? By this we can enter right into the Heart of Jesus and discover how precious we are to Him and how He yearns for us to be closer to Him and how He longs for our love in return. This Lent think about doing something positive to increase the knowledge of your faith. Look for ways to perform specific acts of mercy and kindness at home, at work and in the parish. Try to pray the Rosary with your children as often as you can. Share your reactions and feedback at pastoralcouncil@staidanparish.org or call (516) 746-6585 x9592. St. Aidan s Pastoral Council tries to be responsive to the needs of our parish.
