(2) Secretary-1 receives Vice Executive Chairman, of Itochu Corp YANGON, 8 April - Secretary- 1 of the State Law and Order Restoration Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Vice Executive Chairman Mr Tadayoshi Nakazawa of Itochu Corporation of Japan and party at Dagon-Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence this morning. Present were Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Nyunt Swe and Director General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet. (3) Maiden voyage of mv Mongla welcomed YANGON, 8 April-A ceremony to welcome the maiden voyage of Myanma Five Star Line cargo vessel mv Mongla was held at the Nanthida Jetty yesterday morning.

It is the second of the two 3,300-ton multi-purpose cargo vessels built by Yunnan Machinery Import and Export Corporation of the People s Republic of China for MFSL. Present were Ministers at the Office of the Chairman of the State Law and Order Restoration Council Brig-Gen Myo Thant and Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister for Transport Lt-Gen Thein Win, Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, PRC Ambassador Ms Chen Baoliu, directors-general, managing directors and the principal of the departments under the Ministry of Transport, Managing Director of MFSL U Khin Maung Htoo and officials, personnel of Yunnan Machinery Import and Export Corporation and guests. (4) Minister inspects Kyaw-Zibya section of ChaungU-Pakokku-Gangaw- Kalay Railroad YANGON, 8 April-Minister for Rail Transportation U Win Sein, accompanied by Managing Director Thura U Thaung Lwin of Myanma Railways and officials, inspected Kyaw-Zibya section of ChaungU-Pakokku-Gangaw-Kalay Railroad on yesterday morning. General Manager (Civil) U Kyaw San and Deputy General Manager (Civil) U Ohn Lwin briefed the minister on the places where the railroad sections were constructed with difficulty. Construction work of Kyaw-Zibya section was completed on 31 March. The minister instructed officials to systematically build retaining walls to prevent landslide and floods which cause damage to the railroad and spoke of the need for maintenance for long-term use. The railroad section has successfully been constructed with the efforts of depart mental personnel, cooperation of local people and assistance of technology. The departmental personnel and the local people faced various difficulties while constructing the railroad section but they were able to overcome these due to their efforts. The difficulties included constructing the railroad -through 5- Kyaukleik Hill, 156.7 feet high, and Nagar Abyss, 500 feet wide and 62 feet deep. It is scheduled for opening on 9 April morning.

(5) MD of Hopeson Myanmar CO-Ltd calls on Minister for H & T YANGON, 8 April-Managing Director Mr Toshio Yoneda of Hopeson Myanmar Co Ltd called on Member of the State Law and Order Restoration Council Minister for Hotels and Tourism Lt-Gen Kyaw Ba at his office this afternoon. They discussed construction of modern hotel, office building and showroom in downtown Yangon. Hopeson Myanmar is now building a world-class office building here. Also present were Director-General U Khin Maung Latt of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism, Managing Director U Soe Thein of Myanma Hotels and Tourism Services and officials. (6) MoU for production of PCV flooring signed YANGON, 8 April-The Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Ltd and Hanwha Chemical Corporation of the Republic of Korea signed a Memorandum of Understanding for production of PCV flooring in the meeting hall of UMEHL on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this morning. Chairman of UMEHL Advocate-General Maj-Gen Than Oo and Chairman of Hanwha Chemical Corporation Mr Lee Jong Hak signed the MoU. (7) MIC Secretary receives Executive Chairman, party of Emercon Consolidated Sdn Bhd YANGON 8 April - Minister at the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung received Executive Chairman Mr Y M Dato Haji Tengku Putra and party of Emercon Consolidated Sdn Bhd of Malaysia at Myanmar Investment Commission Office at 4 pm today. They discussed establishment of industrial zone and construction of apartments, offices and markets. Officials of the Myanmar Investment Commission Office were also present. (8) Minister for Science and Technology receives Executive Vice-President of Itochu Corporation YANGON, 8 April - Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung received a high level economic mission of the Japan and Tokyo Chamber

of Commerce and Industry led by Executive Vice-President Mr Tadayoshi Nakazawa of Itochu Corporation at his office at 3 pm today. They discussed cooperation in science and technology between the two countries and technological matters. Present also were Rector of Yangon Institute of Technology U Kyin Soe (attached to the Ministry s Office) and Rector Dr Kyaw Thein of Institute of Computer Science and Technology. (9) Japan business mission calls on Mayor of Yangon YANGON, 8 April- A 30 member mission of Tokyo Chamber of Commerce and Industry led by Executive Vice-President Mr Tadayoshi Nakazawa of Itochu Corporation called on Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay at the City Hall this afternoon. They -discussed economic cooperation on mutual basis and development affairs. Also present were Vice-Chairman of YCDC Vice-Mayor Col Maung Par, Secretary U Kyaw Win, Joint Secretary Col Myint Aung and officials. (10) Minister for H & T receives BICB Chief Representative YANGON, 8 April Minister for Hotels and Tourism Lt-Gen Kyaw Ba received Chief Representative (Yangon Office) of Brunei Investment and Commercial Bank Mr Bahrin Hj MD Yusof and party at his office yesterday. Mr Bahrin said Audley Hotels and Resorts Asia Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of the bank, is specially interested in Myanmar s hotel business, inquiring about the investment opportunities. The company is operating many hotels in Asia. Director-General of the Directorate of Hotels and Tourism U Khin Maung Latt, Managing Director of Restaurant and Beverage Enterprise U Myo Min, Managing Director of Myanma Hotels and Tourism Services U Soe Thein and officials were also present. (11) More on parcel bomb YANGON, 8 April - Initial investigation revealed that the book parcel bomb that exploded at Lt-Gen Tin Oo s residence on the P evening of 6 April 1997 was t airmailed from Japan and the book was printed in Japanese.

According to the information received from the ongoing investigation there are reasons to believe that the bomb plot was masterminded by some anti-myanmar government groups within Japan which have resorted to act of terrorism. (12) Tourists of cruiseliner ms Mermoz conclude visit YANGON, 8 April - A total of 219 tourists of cruiseliner ms Mermoz which arrived on 6 April left here at 2 pm today after visiting Shwedagon Pagoda, National Museum, Karaweik Hall, Bogyoke Aung San Market and downtown Yangon today.
