Page1 4 We Believe God has a Plan for Humanity The greatest deception men suffer is from their own opinions. Leonardo da Vinci Introduction What is man? Ask various people in our culture to identify or categorize man and you are likely to get a wide variety of answers. Some will say he is an animal that evolved from sludge billions of years ago. Others say, We are made of star-stuff. 1 Still, others say humans are the apex of God s creation. Yet, how one responds to this question has both personal and societal impact in ways we do not always realize. If we view man as nothing more than a sophisticated ape it affects how we treat one another. It is belief in evolution that logically leads to many of the ills in our present day culture. And it is right belief that leads to a society that provides the best opportunities to all. Thus our belief concerning the identity of man 2 affects the course of the world, and the course of each of our lives. To understand our identity we need to regain a sense of our roots. God Created Everything Out of Nothing It is interesting that the theory that scientists originally thought would fit their atheistic view of the universe seems to be a better description of how God said things began in the first place. Scientists have realized that all the particles of the universe are moving in an outward direction from what is the center of the universe. It takes little imagination to realize that if you put the whole thing in reverse you end up with a beginning. 1 Carl Sagan, Cosmos 2 Man was originally created in the image and likeness of God: he fell through disobedience, incurring thereby both physical and spiritual death. All men are born with a sinful nature, are separated from the life of God, and can be saved only through the atoning work of the Lord Jesus Christ. The portion of the unrepentant and unbelieving is existence forever in conscious torment; and that of the believer, in everlasting joy and bliss. (See C&MA Statement of Faith).

Page2 This has been referred to as the Big Bang. I would prefer to call it the Omnipotent Word. At that point God spoke and the universe came into existence from nothing. As God said in Genesis and reiterated in Hebrews: By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible. (11:3 ESV) Thus God created an environment where man dwells: an environment that reflects his infinite nature, his power, and his glory. Humanity s Origin Man also came about through God s creative work. Man s origin is connected to his purpose. God has an intention for humankind. God created us to glorify him. When we are speaking with respect to God himself, this is a good summary of our purpose. But when we speak with respect our own interests, we make the happy discovery that we are to enjoy God and take delight in him and in our relationship with him. 3 God was very specific in stating the origin and identity of man for the reasons mentioned above. First, God tells us that he said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:26-27 ESV) All of the people of the world came from one original couple. God made man and woman. That man is said to be made in the image of God means that he is like God. Man was not made in the image of an animal; and animals are not said to be in the image of God. Not even angels are said to be made in the image of God. Of all God s creation we are most like God. The word for image means an object similar to something else and often representative of it. This word is used for many things that are replicas in the Bible. In Genesis 5:3 we are told that Seth was born to Adam and he was in the image of Adam. This means that he was like Adam. We cannot describe how Adam is like God in detail, because we cannot possibly know all the 3 Grudem p. 441

Page3 details about God. It is enough to say we are made in his image. 4 There are many ways we are like God, but this became hard to understand when that image became distorted after the fall. We had been a perfect reflection of God s glory. While that image has not been completely erased in us, it is now distorted due to sin. Humanity s Nature & Circumstance Man s substance is body, soul, and spirit. Jesus speaks of body & soul when he warns: And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. (Matthew 10:28 ESV) For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. (1 Corinthians 2:11 ESV) Paul mentions our trichotomous nature in 1 Thessalonians: Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. (5:23 ESV) The writer to the Hebrews says, For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12 ESV) Mary s words as she rejoices in God s favor mention both spirit and soul: And Mary said, My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, (Luke 1:46-47 ESV) Peter spoke of departure from his body: I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder, since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things. (2 Peter 1:13-15 ESV) In the Old Testament: As for me, Daniel, my spirit within me was anxious, and the visions of my head alarmed me. (Daniel7:15 ESV) 4 See Grudem pp.443-4

Page4 My soul is cast down within me. (Psalm 42:6 ESV) And all were weeping and mourning for her, but he said, Do not weep, for she is not dead but sleeping. 53 And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But taking her by the hand he called, saying, Child, arise. 55 And her spirit returned, and she got up at once. And he directed that something should be given her to eat. (Luke 8:52-55 ESV) And they fell on their faces and said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and will you be angry with all the congregation? (Numbers 16:22 ESV) Thus declares the LORD, who stretched out the heavens and founded the earth and formed the spirit of man within him (Zechariah 12:1 ESV) While we do not need science to verify the Bible, it is interesting that recent studies have demonstrated a distinction between the mind and the brain. 5 Man is not simply a physical material being with a highly functioning bio-physical machine called a brain. There is evidence from various scientific studies that corresponds with God s word, agreeing that we are both mind (soul) and brain. This research has demonstrated that mind operates upon the physical structure called the brain. In the words of Dr. Mario Beauregard, 6 One truly profound change that quantum physics has made is to verify the existence of nonmechanical causes. One of these is the activity of the human mind, which, as we will see, is not identical to the functions of the brain. 7 Beauregard adds, Evidence of the mind s control over the brain is actually captured in these studies. There is such a thing as mind over matter. We do have will power, consciousness, 5 See Beauregard The Spiritual brain Also The Mind the Brain 6 MARIO BEAUREGARD s groundbreaking work on the neurobiology of mystical. Because of his research into the neuroscience of consciousness, he was selected by the World Media Net to be among the One Hundred Pioneers of the 21 st -Beauregard, Mario; O'Leary, Denyse. The Spiritual Brain (p. 369). HarperCollins. Kindle Edition. 7 Ibid. (p. 34).

Page5 and emotions, and combined with a sense of purpose and meaning, we can effect change. 8 Again Beauregard adds, The brain, however, is not the mind; it is an organ suitable for connecting a mind to the rest of the universe. 9 All of this implies that man is spiritual in nature. Of course God had already told us this. Yet it is still interesting to see that we, as stubborn children, are discovering through science what God has been saying from the beginning. These studies also showed that people incorporate their whole being when they are involved in deep intense prayer. This has actually been measured using fmri. Our brains light up, so to speak, when we are engaged in deep, focused prayer with the Lord. This in itself suggests that we were uniquely constructed for the purpose of having a relationship with God. Another doctor, Jeffrey Schwartz, a nonmaterialist UCLA neuropsychiatrist, treats obsessive-compulsive disorder a neuropsychiatric disease marked by distressing, intrusive, and unwanted thoughts by getting patients to reprogram their brains. Their minds change their brains. 10 But there is evidence that the mind and the brain are not identical, which means that an actual experience of a reality beyond themselves is a real possibility 11 Sadly, that purpose was disrupted by humanity s choice to disobey and thus break relationship with God. Death The good news is that death has been defeated for those who have received Jesus as Savior. Death is swallowed up in victory. O death where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? (1 Corinthians 15:54-55) The challenge is that we will continue to experience the ravages of illness and death in our physical bodies. So we do not 8 Beauregard, Mario; O'Leary, Denyse. Page6 lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. (2 Corinthians 4:16 ESV) We will also continue to experience the grief caused by separation from loved ones when they pass from this life until the return of Jesus. At that time our final enemy will be removed. Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. (1 Corinthians 15:24-26 ESV). Humanity began the process of dying when Adam and Eve disobeyed God s will. Death is the penalty for sin. We had not understood that our life is so bound up with God that our existence depends upon God s will. Adam and Eve s choice was an attempt at personal autonomy. Yet, we live and have our being in God. It is impossible for us to live apart from that vital connection. And so when man sought to live independently through pulling away from God, our whole being was affected - including the physical. Physical death is the separation of body and soul: and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it. (Ecclesiastes 12:7 ESV) These are the years of the life of Ishmael: 137 years. He breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people. (Genesis 25:17 ESV) When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne. 10 They cried out with a loud voice, O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth? 11 Then they were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers should be complete, who were to be killed as they themselves had been. (Revelation 6:9-11 ESV) Hell is described as the second (spiritual) death: Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Page7 (Revelation 20:14-15 ESV). Our first spiritual death was when we first sinned and were separated from God. We will be reunited with God again at the judgement. The wicked will then be permanently separated from God in the lake of fire. Our Sin Separates Us from God It is our actions that caused our separation from God. Behold, the LORD's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear. (Isaiah 59:1-2 ESV) Jesus also spoke of this reality: But Abraham said, Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us. (Luke 16:25-26 ESV) And you were dead in the trespasses and sins... But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ by grace you have been saved (Ephesians 2:1, 4-5 ESV) Humanity s Depravity The phrase total depravity is used to describe man. This has been misunderstood to mean that man has nothing good about him, but that is not what is intended by this line of thinking. Man is a fallen creature and every aspect of his being has been adversely affected as a result. There is no part of man s being that is still perfect without fault. But man, being made in God s image, still bears that image even though it is distorted. The further result of the fall is that Adam s children and all succeeding generations were born with a nature that does not measure up to God s standard, which is perfection. We are hard pressed to understand how this takes place. Was our DNA affected? Certainly, it was, but is this how the sinful nature is passed from parent to child? We are simply not told. Yet,

Page8 somehow Adam was our representative. As Paul explains: 12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned 13 for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come. (Romans 5:12-14 NASB) Yet, our sin nature also means that we too have done things displeasing to God. In other words we can t hang it all on Adam; we, too, bear personal responsibility. Our Relationship with God was Broken As stated above; due to our corrupt nature we are separated from God. Our relationship has been cut off. To be separated from God is death. We have no life in ourselves. Our life is on loan from God and it begins to wind down from the time of conception. It is life that is the natural order of the universe because God is life. As Jesus said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. (John 14:6 ESV) Our Only Hope God has set in place a plan to restore humanity. Restoration indicates that the image of God in man will one day be completely restored. James reminds us that when we curse others with our tongue we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. (James 3:9 ESV) It is to that likeness that we are being restored in Christ. When Jesus came, his purpose was to restore humankind. God through the Holy Spirit is helping us to put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. (Colossians 3:10 ESV) This is a work that he is doing in us by the power of his Holy Spirit and not we ourselves. And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. (2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV). And it is something he will continue to do. And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

Page9 (Philippians 1:6 ESV) It is our spiritual self that is being restored since we will be given new bodies in the resurrection. Human Destiny Humans have a natural fear of death. It is in our nature to do all that we can to preserve our life in its present context. But need we fear death? What does death bring? Some have said that they do not believe a loving God could send someone to hell. Yet, Jesus minced no words describing the destination of those who refuse salvation. He depicts hell as an unimaginably terrible place to be. We are told it is a place of outer darkness. A place Where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (Matthew 8:12). It is outer darkness because it is place separated from the light of God s glory. There is a sense that people make the choice to be in hell. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. 24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie (Romans 1:22-25a ESV) But it is hard to believe that anyone would choose hell if they really comprehended what it is like. Those that are in hell have made the constant choice to avoid God and his provision through Christ. In the end God does not force himself upon anyone. Jesus presented a parable that portrays hell as a place of everlasting conscious torment in Luke. He said: The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. 24 And he called out, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame. 25 But Abraham said, Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm

Page10 has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us. (Luke 16:22-26 ESV) The Anticipation for Those Who Believe As we have just seen, the hope of those who have placed their faith in Jesus is that death brings them into the immediate presence of God. One of the two thieves who died next to Jesus asked Jesus to remember him when Jesus came to his kingdom. Jesus promised him: Today you will be with me in Paradise. (Luke 23:43) We are given the assurance through Paul: Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. (2 Corinthians 5:8 ESV). Like Lazarus, those who have trusted in God s gracious provision through Jesus will experience the joy of being in his presence. Their delight will be beyond words. Conclusion Humans were created by God. When we were originally created we were perfect, without sin. But soon the man and woman were presented with a choice. They chose to rebel against God s plan, and in so doing they broke relationship with God. Because of God s great love for his creation he set in motion a plan foretold in Genesis to provide a way for humanity to be redeemed. The plan requires us to place our faith in Jesus. Those who do have hope of being with Jesus for eternity. Those who refuse must anticipate permanent separation from God. We will discuss more on heaven and hell in the sections on the resurrection and the second coming of Christ. Christ will have the final victory as his kingdom will outlast and outgrow any other. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace

Page11 there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. Next, we will examine the topic of salvation more closely. These materials were created and compiled by Rev. Bruce A. Overstreet, D.Min., for training in the C&MA Statement of Faith.
