PAGE TWO YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ If you re reading this on the morning or afternoon of Sunday, July 17 th, then I m currently somewhere in Racine, WI, torturing my body! That is because this Sunday I tackle a 1.2-mile Lake Michigan swim, followed by a 56-mile rolling hills bike ride, followed by a 13.1-mile run through Racine County. And I m doing this not only because I love to challenge myself, and in the process inspire other people to challenge themselves as well, but also because I m trying to raise enough money for our parish so that we can inish the renovations to the inside of the church. Even though the race is this Sunday, you can still use the envelopes in the pews and drop your donation at the rectory or in the weekend collection basket at anytime. The total cost for all the renovations to the side altar and the back hallway (which includes re inishing the walls, installing marble behind the statues, framing, installing, staining the new doors and installing their hardware, and installing some new lighting) is around $19,000. So, we can certainly use every donation that we receive! Thank you in advance for your generosity. I m writing this article six days before the half-ironman race, and for the past several days I ve been reviewing Racine s weather forecast for Sunday. It keeps changing, of course, (as we know, weather forecasts are not always the most reliable!) but each day it s looking a little better. The projected high went down from 89 to 84 degrees, and the chance of rain dropped from 60% to 20%. But of course, as with everything else, the weather is in God s hands. It s a good reminder to us that there are lots of things in this world that we cannot control because we are not the ones who are in charge. As the song says: He s got the whole world in His hands! As I mentioned last week, you re welcome to track my progress at the race online on Sunday if you re interested. To do that, go to www.ironman.com, click on Live Coverage at the top of the page, select the Racine 70.3 race, then select Athlete Tracker. You can search for me either by my bib number (#1496) or my last name. The swim start begins in different stages (the irst wave goes off at 7:00am and the last wave doesn t begin until 8:30am). My age group swim wave begins at 7:54am. I m hoping to beat a total time of 7 hours, 28 minutes, and 9 seconds, which was my inish time from last year. I m expecting to have a better swim time than last year (48:13), I may or may not beat my bike time (3:38:51), and if it s hot out I don t think I ll be able to beat last year s run time (2:46:16). We ll see what happens. And for those of you who are math junkies, you may have noticed that the swim, bike and run times that I listed do not add up to my total time of 7:28:09. That s because of the fourth discipline in triathlon: transitions. The time that you spend transitioning from the swim to the bike, and then the bike to the run, is called transition (T1 and T2, respectively). Those times are included in your total race time, because the clock never stops until you cross the inish line. So, my transitions are another area where I hope to improve over last year. My T1 and T2 times last year were 5:56 and 8:54 (the T2 time is typically much faster than the T1 time, so I don t know what in the world was going on with me last year, but hopefully I can correct it!) You can also watch the racers cross the inish line live online on Sunday. If my inish time is anywhere in the vicinity of last year, I hope to inish the race somewhere between 3:20-3:40pm (in case you want to watch me stumble across the inish line!) Again, thank you to all who have supported me. Finally, on another note, if you are interested in serving as a Communion minister at weekend Masses, we will be offering a training session on two Saturdays, July 23 rd and August 6 th, both at 1:00pm in church. You only need to attend one of the two sessions, and to be a Communion minister you need to have received the sacraments of Baptism, Con irmation and Eucharist. St. Beatrice, pray for us. May God bless you. Fr. Rob
