The Point The way we treat others should reflect the way we re treated by God. The Passage Matthew 7:1-12 The Bible Meets Life Tolerance is a word that gets tossed around a lot by both Christians and non-christians, even though both sides have differing definitions for tolerance. In spite of the high value placed on tolerance, we still tend to judge people and criticize their opinions or behavior. Jesus calls us to a far higher standard. Even if we believe our viewpoint is the correct one, Jesus calls us to treat people as we desire to be treated. The Setting As Jesus continued to teach His disciples in the Sermon on the Mount, He guided them to deal with the problem of being critical or judgmental of others. He taught them to live according to a standard set by God Himself. God had treated them with love expressed in mercy and grace. He expected them to treat others in the same way. In so doing, they would reflect the way they had been treated by God. BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE 57

What does the Bible say? The Law and the Prophets (v. 12) This expression referred to the entire Jewish Scripture, or what s known today as the Old Testament. Matthew 7:1-12 (HCSB) 1 Do not judge, so that you won t be judged. 2 For with the judgment you use, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you look at the speck in your brother s eye but don t notice the log in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, Let me take the speck out of your eye, and look, there s a log in your eye? 5 Hypocrite! First take the log out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother s eye. 6 Don t give what is holy to dogs or toss your pearls before pigs, or they will trample them with their feet, turn, and tear you to pieces. 7 Keep asking, and it will be given to you. Keep searching, and you will find. Keep knocking, and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who searches finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. 9 What man among you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! 12 Therefore, whatever you want others to do for you, do also the same for them this is the Law and the Prophets. 58 SESSION 5

THE POINT The way we treat others should reflect the way we re treated by God. GET INTO THE STUDY DISCUSS: Invite your group members to discuss Question 1 on page 45 of the Personal Study Guide (PSG): What s one of the nicest things anyone has ever done for you? Allow time for each person to respond. SUMMARIZE THE PSG (PAGE 46): Life is full of difficult people. You encounter them on the job, in the classroom, and maybe even in your Bible study group. Even total strangers can make life difficult. As I m writing, I m on an airplane, and the guy sitting in front of me has his seat dropped back in my lap. How can I write a Bible study about dealing with difficult people when the guy in front of me is making it difficult? In the same way, how can we keep from being difficult to others? The surface solution is to be nice to everyone all the time. But is that realistic? 10 minutes Notes TIP: Encourage your group members to participate in church-wide activities outside of your Bible study time. Make plans to go as a group to the next church-wide fellowship or serve together at mission opportunities. SAY: As with everything Jesus said in His Sermon on the Mount, His teaching went beyond a polite definition of proper outward behavior. His goal? Heart transformation. ACTIVITY (OPTIONAL): Bring and display a regular 12-inch ruler. Invite your group to discuss the purpose of a ruler. Used properly, a ruler measures something against a standard. In this case, the standard is length measured in inches. Without using actual rulers, we see people being harshly measured against various standards every day. We may even be the one sizing up, or judging others. Our assessment of someone determines how we treat him or her. Jesus words in this passage speak directly to this way of thinking and acting. GUIDE: Call the group s attention to The Point on page 46 of the PSG: The way we treat others should reflect the way we re treated by God. PRAY: Transition into the Bible study by praying for your group. Pray for your group members as they seek to live out what they re studying in God s Word. 10 minutes STUDY THE BIBLE Matthew 7:1-6 Notes 1 Do not judge, so that you won t be judged. READ: Ask a group member to read aloud Matthew 7:1-6. SUMMARIZE THE PSG (PAGE 48): Jesus was teaching against arrogant judgment that condemns behavior and words that damage another person. This isn t a blanket statement against all evaluation, but a challenge to be discerning when we appraise behavior. Later in verses 15-20, we re commanded to judge in the sense of wisely examining and evaluating beliefs and behavior against biblical standards of righteousness. We must begin by considering the log (v. 3) in our own eye. Our own transparency in this area may even open the door for making real differences in the lives of others. ALTERNATE QUESTION: What specific actions or attitudes are prohibited in these verses? DISCUSS: Question 2 on page 48 of the PSG: What s the difference between judging others and talking honestly about sin? DO: Instruct group members to complete the activity on page 50 of the PSG on their own. (Note: The PSG includes a scale for the second question.) Don t Judge: Which criteria do you find yourself using to judge others? Circle all that apply. Occupation Religious affiliation Clothes, possessions, or other outward appearance Ethnicity Christian or Non-Christian Other: How often do you evaluate your own heart before judging others? Rate yourself on the following scale. 60 SESSION 5

THE POINT The way we treat others should reflect the way we re treated by God. Matthew 7:1-6 Commentary Evaluate yourself instead of judging others. Verse 1: Jesus turned attention to another hindrance to growing in Him being judgmental. Jesus directed in no uncertain terms to give up judging others. He did not imply they could never engage in evaluating others; however, He left no room for cold, cruel criticism. Jesus gave a reliable reason for refusing to sit as judges who condemn others. Those who refrained from judging others in a vindictive or condemning way could look forward to the same treatment when they found themselves in the seat of the judged. Verse 2: Jesus added two sobering details. First, His followers could expect to receive the same kind of judgment they doled out. If they showed mercy, they would be treated mercifully. However, they could not expect mercy if they handed out condemnation. Second, they could expect the same degree of judgment they poured out. If they showed very little mercy, they could expect mercy to be in short supply when they were judged. If they were extremely merciful, they could expect extreme mercy. Verses 3-4: None of us should see ourselves as qualified judges. But we effortlessly slide into the seat of a judge when we overlook our own sin while we condemn the sins of the person on whom we re passing judgment. Jesus described looking past our sin as a log in our eye. Imagine a huge timber stuck in our eye as we try to see saw dust in another s eye. We simply cannot clearly see the faults of others while we re blinded by our own. Yet, we constantly ignore our own flaws and arrogantly pass judgment on the flaws of others. Jesus raised a tough question. How can we give spiritual advice to someone whom we judge to be falling short if we re blind to our own spiritual shortcomings? Directing others to change while overlooking our own sins paints a picture of outrageous behavior. Verse 5: Not only is such behavior a contradiction, it s also counterfeit. Jesus called people who exhibit such counterfeit spiritual behavior hypocrites, picturing a person playing a role on a stage. Hypocrisy in believers brings shame to the kingdom of God and damages spiritual growth. When we find ourselves being hypocritical in judgment, we do well to be honest with ourselves. By reckoning with our own sins first, we pull out the timbers that blind us and make us judgmental toward others. Only when we take that critical step can we actually treat others right. Verse 6: Jesus brought up dogs and pigs. These dogs were mongrels that would eat anything; the pigs would eat even spoiled slop. These animals represented ways some people respond to the precious treasure believers share in Christ. Some people attack a believer because the good news of Christ doesn t satisfy their self-indulgent appetites. Likewise, they may trample it under foot. Believers need to be aware that some people won t appreciate the walk with God we treasure. We need to be wise judges of the people as we share our faith in Him. BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE 61

10 minutes STUDY THE BIBLE Matthew 7:7-11 Notes 7 Keep asking, and it will be given to you. READ: Ask a group member to read aloud Matthew 7:7-11. SUMMARIZE THE PSG (PAGE 49): Wisdom is the ability to see as God sees and to live as God has called us to live. So how do we get wisdom? Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to all generously and without criticizing, and it will be given to him (James 1:5). Wisdom comes through persistent prayer. As we spend time in God s Word and in prayer, He molds our hearts and cuts away the things that aren t like Him. We will begin to see others the way the Father sees them. ALTERNATE QUESTION: What specific attitudes and actions are commanded in these verses? DISCUSS: Question 3 on page 49 of the PSG: When has persistent prayer changed your relationship with someone? SUMMARIZE THE PSG (PAGE 49): Jesus used the example of an earthly, sinful father to show the greatness of God s love. My ability to love my sons as their dad can t be compared with the nature of our heavenly Father, but even I know how to give good gifts to my boys. So, our heavenly Father, who is far greater and loves us far more, certainly knows much more how to give good gifts. He knows how to give the very things we need. TRANSITION: In the next verse, Jesus shared the heart of His message: how we re to treat others. 62 SESSION 5

THE POINT The way we treat others should reflect the way we re treated by God. Matthew 7:7-11 Commentary Seek God s wisdom. Verse 7: Being wise in our judgments requires the Lord s help. We can t take on such a daunting task by ourselves. We need His help to be discerning without being judgmental. We can find that spiritual discernment in prayer. When we seek His wisdom in prayer, He will answer. Jesus didn t say we always get the answer we want. However, we can trust Him to help when we open our hearts to Him. Jesus alerted us to the need for persistence when we pray. Sometimes praying involves asking for something. At other times, it s more like searching for something or trying to open a closed door. We don t always get what we ask for immediately. Neither can we always find what we re searching for in an instant. Furthermore, praying doesn t always unlock the closed door at a moment s notice. We cannot cease praying about what we need even when we find ourselves waiting a long time for an answer. Persistence in prayer is the order of the day for a growing believer. When we pray relentlessly, we will receive the wisdom we need to exercise spiritual discernment with others. Verse 8: When the answer doesn t come, the search doesn t end, or the door doesn t open, Jesus reassured that praying is not in vain. Our prayer will be answered, but perhaps not within the time frame we expect. His assurance helps us keep on praying when an answer has not come. If we persist in prayer, we will see for ourselves that He keeps His word and provides the help we need. It might come immediately, or it might come later. But we can rest confident that God will answer. Verses 9-10: Jesus encouraged us by pointing to the ways of wise and caring parents. When a child asks for bread, a caring father will place it in his or her hand if he can. He would never think about responding by handing his child a stone. Even though a loaf of bread may resemble a stone, it s entirely different. Likewise, a snake may resemble certain fish, but it s altogether different. It can be dangerous. When a child asks for fish, a caring parent won t respond by giving him or her a snake. We expect parents to give their children what will help them instead of what might hurt them. Verse 11: Observe the distinction Jesus made. He reminded listeners that we re given to evil. But even though caring parents are given to evil, we still try to do what s best for our children. But our heavenly Father isn t at all given to evil because it s not in His nature. Therefore, we can always count on Him to do what s in our best interest when we ask Him for help. He won t make any mistakes when He answers our prayers. He always does what is right and best. BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE 63

10 minutes STUDY THE BIBLE Matthew 7:12 Notes 12 Therefore, whatever you want others to do for you, do also the same for them this is the Law and the Prophets. READ: Ask a group member to read aloud Matthew 7:12. DISCUSS: Question 4 on page 50 of the PSG: How do you want to be treated? SUMMARIZE THE PSG (PAGE 51): In this verse, Jesus summed up in one sentence how to have great relationships with others. Typically, this saying was heard in its negative form: Don t do to others what you do not want done to you. But Jesus words call us to go beyond the world s standards of morality and ethics; He calls us to step into people s lives with love and grace. This principle goes deeper than just being nice to people because we want people to be nice to us. When you read this principle in light of the complete Sermon on the Mount and Jesus entire life and ministry it s a call for us to love others the way Christ loves us. LEADER GUIDE: Bring your group s attention to Pack item #5, Purpose poster, as you discuss Question 5. ALTERNATE QUESTION: How can we help one another carry out this verse? DISCUSS: Question 5 on page 51 of the PSG: God s treatment of us should transform our treatment of others. What s our role in God s transforming work? SAY: God is patient and full of grace in dealing with us; therefore, love and grace need to guide our relationships with one another. 64 SESSION 5

THE POINT The way we treat others should reflect the way we re treated by God. Matthew 7:12 Commentary Treat others the way you want to be treated. Verse 12: Parents refer to this as The Golden Rule as they teach children how to treat others. However, they often make a mistake. They leave the impression that following it will render something in return. Children come to believe they should do good to another so that person will do good to them. The verse doesn t make such a claim. Our reason for living out this rule isn t to get something in return. We do it because we re kingdom citizens who want to treat others in a way that reflects how God has treated us. For growing disciples in Christ, it s a life rule we never want to bend, break, or ignore. As we ponder this verse, we can recall innumerable ways God has been merciful and gracious to us. He loves us so much He has provided the way for us to be saved through the sacrifice of His Son. Because of His love, He has made it possible for us to go from being separated from Him to being His children. We enjoy an intimate relationship with Him. We have heaven as our eternal home. Because of how He treats us, we have every reason to rejoice and be grateful to Him. That s why we are to treat others in the same way. Instead of vindictive and judgmental, we strive to be merciful and gracious toward others. But, we can t expect non-christians to embrace this verse fully and live it out consistently. Until they have a life-transforming relationship with Christ, they cannot begin to comprehend the reach of this verse. Jesus intended for His disciples to be intentional in their relationships with others. In Jesus day, Jewish people learned a passive version of this life rule. They were instructed not to do anything to others that they wouldn t want done to them. They could follow that rule by doing absolutely nothing for anyone at any time. But Jesus prompted His disciples to take initiative in showing God s love to others, to be intentional about treating others the same way God had treated them. Jesus underscored the biblical basis for this life rule it summed up the Law and the Prophets. He had in mind all of what we know as the Old Testament. Everything His followers had learned from God s Word could be put into practice by following this rule. What Jesus taught His disciples then still holds authority for kingdom citizens now. Living out God s Word means putting this verse to work in our relationships. 5 minutes LIVE IT OUT SAY: How will you reflect God s grace to others this week? GUIDE: Lead group members to consider the responses to the Bible study listed on page 52 of the PSG. Examine your behavior. During your prayer time for the next 40 days, specifically ask God to help you treat others the way He wants you to treat them. Seek God s wisdom. Identify a person or situation you can lift in prayer. Commit to praying for that person or circumstance until things are resolved. Persist and don t quit! Set aside your prejudices. Intentionally build a relationship with at least two people you would naturally judge. Find out what makes them tick. Wrap It Up SAY: Jesus words in this passage aren t easy ones to live out. He wasn t teaching the importance of polite, appropriate, or correct behavior. No, Jesus was calling for our inner attitude to be one marked by grace, forgiveness, and sincere love. Thankfully, we re not left to our own devices to do this. Christ Himself set the pattern by loving us first so that our love for others stems from the agape love He has shown to us.
