Triune God Week 5 September 29, 2013 The Holy Spirit 1

What and where does orthodox Christianity teach about the Holy Spirit? Apostle's Creed Nicene Creed Athanasian Creed Apostle's Creed who was conceived by the Holy Ghost I believe in the Holy Ghost Quotations of the Creeds are as they appear in The Book of Concord. 2

Luther's explanation I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Ghost has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith; even as He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian Church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith; in which Christian Church He forgives daily and richly all sins to me and all believers, and at the last day will raise up me and all the dead, and will give to me and to all believers in Christ everlasting life. This is most certainly true. 3

Nicene Creed. and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spake by the Prophets. Athanasian Creed For there is one Person of the Father, another of the Son, and another of the Holy Ghost. But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost is all one: the glory equal, the majesty coeternal. Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Ghost. The Father uncreated, the Son uncreated, and the Holy Ghost uncreated. The Father incomprehensible, the Son incomprehensible, and the Holy Ghost incomprehensible. 4

The Father eternal, the Son eternal, and the Holy Ghost eternal. And yet they are not three Eternals, but one Eternal. As there are not three Uncreated nor three Incomprehensibles, but one Uncreated and one Incomprehensible. So likewise the Father is almighty, the Son almighty, and the Holy Ghost almighty. And yet they are not three Almighties, but one Almighty. So the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Ghost is God. And yet they are not three Gods, but one God. So likewise the Father is Lord, the Son Lord, and the Holy Ghost Lord. And yet not three Lords, but one Lord The Holy Ghost is of the Father and of the Son: neither made, nor created, nor begotten, but proceeding. So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Ghost, not three Holy Ghosts. 5

Augsburg Confession: Article I 2] that is to say, there is one Divine Essence which is called and which is God: eternal, without body, without parts, of infinite power, wisdom, and goodness, the Maker and Preserver of all things, visible and invisible; and 3] yet there are three Persons, of the same essence and power, who also are coeternal, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. And the term "person" 4] they use as the Fathers have used it, to signify, not a part or quality in another, but that which subsists of itself. Article V The Holy Ghost is given, who works faith; where and when it pleases God, in them that hear. There are more references to the Holy Spirit in the Augsburg Confession. 6

Heretical Views of the Holy Spirit. Arianism as taught by The Watchtower Society. The Holy Spirit is not God. The Holy Spirit is not a person. The Holy Spirit as described in the Watchtower Society Literature: From God there goes forth an invisible active force by means of which he gets his will done. It is not a mere influence such as man might exercise over others by his powerful personality. It is a force that is operative, and it issues forth from God who is holy, that is to say, absolutely clean and righteous. He send it forth to accomplish what is holy. So it is correctly called 'holy spirit'. 7

Luke, use the force! Additional WTS statements concerning The Holy Spirit: The holy spirit is the invisible force of Almighty God that moves his servants to do his will. The Scriptures themselves untie to show that God's holy spirit is not a person but is God's active force by which he accomplishes his purpose and executes his will. 8

The Bible's use of holy spirit indicates that it is a controlled force that Jehovah God uses to accomplish a variety of his purposes. To a certain extent, it can be likened to electricity, a force that can be adapted to perform a great variety of operations. How does the Watchtower Society justify their claim that The Holy Spirit is an impersonal force? The Watchtower society contends that since the noun pneu~ma which is the Greek word for spirit occurs in the neuter gender, The Holy Spirit is an impersonal force. That since the Greek New Testament at times uses neuter pronouns with pneu~ma in reference to The Holy Spirit, he is not a person but a force. 9

Nowhere do we read of Jehovah God and Jesus as being referred to by neuter pronouns, which is the case in regard to the holy spirit. 'It is the Spirit of Truth. The world cannot obtain that Spirit, because it does not see it or recognize it; you recognize it because it stays with you and is within you.' (John 14:16, 17, AT; Acts 2:33). pneu~ma is indeed in the neuter gender. I does not have a masculine or feminine form. At John 4:24 we have the word pneu~ma appears where it says God is a spirit. This does not mean that God is an impersonal force. The Greek words for both child and demon is neuter as well. In the Old Testament, the corresponding word for spirit used of The Holy Spirit is xwr (ruwach) which is a feminine noun. 10

It is true that neuter personal pronouns are used in the NT with reference to The Holy Spirit. Grammatically, this is what we would expect to see. In grammatically correct constructions, the gender of the pronoun should agree with the gender of the noun. Is this always the case with reference to The Holy Spirit? John 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall bear witness of me: Whom: The pronoun is masculine. He: ekeinov Masculine pronoun. 11

A. T. Robertson He (ekeinos). Emphatic masculine pronoun, not neuter (ekeino) though following ho. The proper neuter grammatical form is intentionally disregarded and the masculine is used instead. John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I go, I will send him unto you. And he, when he is come, will convict the world in respect of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Verse 7 Him: Masculine personal pronoun Verse 8 Again the masculine ekeinov. 12

John 14:26 But the Comforter, even the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said unto you. John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but what things soever he shall hear, these shall he speak: and he shall declare unto you the things that are to come. Here again in both verses is the emphatic personal pronoun ekeinov. Robertson comments about the significance of ekeinov in his grammar. 13

Two passages in John call for remark, inasmuch as they bear on the personality of The Holy Spirit, In 14:16, o9 de paraklhtov to pneuma to agion opemyei o9 pathr e9n tw onomati mou ekeinov umav didacei, the relative o9 follows the grammatical gender of pneuma. 0Ekeinov, however skips over pneuma and reverts back to the gender of paraklhtov. In 16:13 a more striking example occurs, otan de elqh ekeinov, to pneuma thv alhqeiav. Here one has to go back six lines to ekeinov and seven to paraklhtov. It is more evident therefore in this passage that John is insisting on the personality of the Holy Spirit, when the grammatical gender so easily called for ekeino. 14

Nowhere do we read of Jehovah God and Jesus as being referred to by neuter pronouns, which is the case in regard to the holy spirit. Is that true? Matthew 2:13 Now when they were departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I tell thee: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. The personal pronoun translated as him is to This is a neuter pronoun. This is used because it is used in reference to the neuter word for child, padion. 15

Luke 2:28 then he received him into his arms, and blessed God, and said, The personal proun translated as him is the neuter auto. Luke 2:40 And the child grew, and waxed strong, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him. Once again the neuter auto is used. The Watchtower's claim is patently false. 16

The Scriptures themselves untie to show that God's holy spirit is not a person but is God's active force by which he accomplishes his purpose and executes his will. The Bible's use of holy spirit indicates that it is a controlled force that Jehovah God uses to accomplish a variety of his purposes. Is this accurate? Acts 13:2 And as they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. The Holy Spirit speaks. The Holy Spirit calls. An impersonal force can do neither. 17

Acts 21:11 And coming to us, and taking Paul s girdle, he bound his own feet and hands, and said, Thus saith the Holy Spirit, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles. Again The Holy Spirit speaks. Acts 5:3-4 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thy heart to lie to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back part of the price of the land? While it remained, did it not remain thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thy power? How is it that thou hast conceived this thing in thy heart? thou has not lied unto men, but unto God. The Holy Spirit is specifically called God. 18

Isaiah 6:8-10 And I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then I said, Here am I; send me. And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and turn again, and be healed. Acts 28:25-27 And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Spirit through Isaiah the prophet unto your fathers, 19

saying, Go thou unto this people, and say, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall in no wise understand; And seeing ye shall see, and shall in no wise perceive: For this people s heart is waxed gross, And their ears are dull of hearing, And their eyes they have closed; Lest, haply they should perceive with their eyes, And hear with their ears, And understand with their heart, And should turn again, And I should heal them. In Isaiah the speaker is identified as The Lord Both hwhy (Yahveh) and ynda (Adonai) are used in reference to the speaker. Paul identifies the speaker specifically as The Holy Spirit. 20

Jeremiah 31:31-34 Behold, the days come, saith Jehovah, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was a husband unto them, saith Jehovah. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith Jehovah: I will put my law in their inward parts, and in their heart will I write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people: and they shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know Jehovah; for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith Jehovah: for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin will I remember no more. 21

Hebrews 10:15-17 And the Holy Spirit also beareth witness to us; for after he hath said, This is the covenant that I will make with them After those days, saith the Lord: I will put my laws on their heart, And upon their mind also will I write them; then saith he, And their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. In Jeremiah the speaker is clearly identified as God (hwhy). The writer of Hebrews identifies the speaker specifically as The Holy Spirit. Once again The Holy Spirit speaks and is identified as God. 22

2 Corinthians 3:15-18 But unto this day, whensoever Moses is read, a veil lieth upon their heart. But whensoever it shall turn to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord the Spirit. In the Old Testament, the phrase Turn to The Lord is always a reference to God. Examples: Deut 30:10 Psalm 22:27 23

Verse 17. Now the Lord is the Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. The New World Translation translates the verse as Jehovah is the Spirit There is a note referring to John 4:24 which says God is a spirit The phrase in the Greek is: o9 de kuriov to pneuma estin Both Lord and Spirit have the article. What did A. T. Robertson say when both the subject and the predicate have the article? If the article appears with both the predicate and subject they are interchangeable. 24

Matthew 12:31-32 Therefore I say unto you, Every sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men; but the blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven. And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him; but whosoever shall speak against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, nor in that which is to come. 25
