GRADES 4-5 YEAR 1 UNIT 8 SESSION 1 Dear Family: The unit theme we will be focusing on for the next four weeks is God Wants Us to Obey. Our stories and lessons will come from the book of Daniel. Together we ll discover how Daniel and his friends obeyed even when they faced death because of their obedience. Together we ll talk about and experience God s love and care for us during tough times. You may want to talk as a family about how hard it is to obey God sometimes. And you may want to ask God together to help you obey and to give you the courage you need to live as God s child. At the end of the unit your child will be taking home a magazine that will give you an idea of what we ve talked about and focused on together during these four weeks. I hope you take the time to look at it and talk to your child about some of the wonderful things we ve learned together about obeying and serving God. GRADES 4-5 YEAR 1 UNIT 8 SESSION 2 Cool Music Based on Daniel 3 Characters Narrator King Nebuchadnezzar King s Spokesman Snitching Official Name Chorus Water Music Band Narrator: To show his power and greatness, King Nebuchadnezzar had a huge, ninety-foot statue made for the people to worship. King s Spokesman: Hear ye, hear ye! May our mighty King Nebuchadnezzar live forever. Bless his royal name. Our great king commands everyone to worship the golden statue at the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, and pipes. Whoever does not bow down will feel the flames of the king s blazing furnace. So decrees the king! Water Band Music: (fullest to emptiest, then back) Narrator: All of the people in King Nebuchadnezzar s kingdom well, almost everybody bowed down and worshiped the golden statue. Snitching Official: Guess who did not bow down. Name Chorus: SHADRACH, MESHACH, AND ABEDNEGO! Snitching Official: Yes, those three guys. I ve never liked them. They act so important. But they re Jews! I can t stand Jews and their God. This is my chance to get them. Narrator: So a few of King Nebuchadnezzar s officials went to the king. Snitching Official: O great and mighty king, bless your royal name. You have ordered that everyone bow down to your statue when they hear the music. Water Band: (emptiest to fullest, then back) Snitching Official: But there are some Jews who didn t listen to your decrees: Name Chorus: SHADRACH, MESHACH, AND ABEDNEGO! 57

Snitching Official: Yes, those guys. They didn t bow down to your marvelous statue. King Nebuchadnezzar: Order those men to come here and answer to me. Name Chorus: SHADRACH, MESHACH, AND ABEDNEGO! King Nebuchadnezzar: Being the powerful king that I am, I gave those three young men another chance. All they had to do was listen to the music and obey. Water Band: (random everyone tapping their glasses) King Nebuchadnezzar: I threatened them with all of my power. I told them if they did not obey, I d have them thrown into the flaming furnace immediately. And I meant it. No god could help them after that. Name Chorus: SHADRACH, MESHACH, AND ABEDNEGO, what is your answer? Narrator: The three spoke to the king. O king, we don t need to explain ourselves to you. If you throw us into the flaming furnace, our God will keep us cool and rescue us. But even if he does not, we will never serve your gods or worship your golden statue. King Nebuchadnezzar: Servants, crank up the heat. Make it seven times hotter. Narrator: The servants went after the three men Name Chorus: SHADRACH, MESHACH, AND ABEDNEGO. King Nebuchadnezzar: Tie their hands and feet, and throw them into the fire. Narrator: The flames were so hot that the servants themselves were killed. King Nebuchadnezzar took a look into the furnace. King Nebuchadnezzar: The men are still alive! And there is a fourth man walking through the fire with them. Their God must have sent an angel to protect them. Narrator: The king went closer to the blazing furnace and shouted. Name Chorus: SHADRACH, MESHACH, AND ABEDNEGO! King s Spokesman: The fire did not touch these men. They didn t smell like smoke. Their clothes were not scorched, and their eyebrows were untouched. King Nebuchadnezzar: Praise be to God Name Chorus: The God of SHADRACH, MESHACH AND ABEDNEGO. 58
