GAME CHANGER: HOW TO IMPACT YOUR WORLD

Even If Daniel 3:16-18 Last Week we talked about our need to experience an intimate relationship with our Heavenly Father. David in Psalm 63 gave us a picture of what it looks like when you re living in the wilderness and have a deep desire to be reconnected to your Heavenly Father. - Then, we walked through steps to move our relationship with the Father from surface level to a level of true intimacy. One struggle that I saw this week that we have with intimacy is the possibility of pain! MercyMe Even If They say sometimes you win some Sometimes you lose some And right now, right now I'm losing bad I've stood on this stage night after night Reminding the broken it'll be alright But right now, oh right now I just can't It's easy to sing When there's nothing to bring me down But what will I say When I'm held to the flame Like I am right now - Bart s history: Where are you on this today? They say it only takes a little faith To move a mountain Well good thing A little faith is all I have, right now But God, when You choose To leave mountains unmovable Oh give me the strength to be able to sing It is well with my soul - What do we do when the mountain is just not moving?

I know the sorrow, and I know the hurt Would all go away if You'd just say the word - You may really know that God could solve your whole problem RIGHT NOW if He wanted to. - What does it take to be able to say, and actually mean, this final section? I know You're able and I know You can Save through the fire with Your mighty hand But even if You don't My hope is You alone Why this topic today? - I believe we have some people in our body right now that are in the middle of this fire and are waiting eagerly for God s hand to move. - And, I think this passage is where the Father can minister to us today! Our condition today: Many of us are waiting on God to move in a big area in our lives. - We might even be right in the middle of the fire. - We ve been walking around the walls of Jericho for what seems like years and years and we re still wondering when the walls are going to fall We ve been taught: Don t you worry, God s gonna come through for you. - But, we ve defined God coming through as us getting what we want. My question for us: How do we accept and live in the situation where God has us right now and still trust Him to get us through. We have to get to the point where we can say, Even if you don t The heart of that song comes from a passage about Daniel and a few of his friends. Daniel 3:16-18 16 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. 18 But even

if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up. There is a lot of amazing stuff in this passage, but the number one thing we see, and learn from these guys, is this: One of the strongest statements in all of God s Word: But even if He does not Let s look at their situation: Daniel 3:1-15 3 King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold, ninety feet high and nine feet wide, and set it up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon. 2 He then summoned the satraps, prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates and all the other provincial officials to come to the dedication of the image he had set up. 3 So the satraps, prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates and all the other provincial officials assembled for the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up, and they stood before it. 4 Then the herald loudly proclaimed, This is what you are commanded to do, O peoples, nations and men of every language: 5 As soon as you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes and all kinds of music, you must fall down and worship the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up. 6 Whoever does not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace. 7 Therefore, as soon as they heard the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp and all kinds of music, all the peoples, nations and men of every language fell down and worshiped the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up. 8 At this time some astrologers came forward and denounced the Jews. 9 They said to King Nebuchadnezzar, O king, live forever! 10 You have issued a decree, O king, that everyone who hears the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes and all kinds of music must fall down and worship the image of gold, 11 and that whoever does not fall down and worship will be thrown into a blazing furnace. 12 But there are some Jews whom you have set over the affairs of the province of Babylon Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego who pay no attention to you, O king. They neither serve your gods nor worship the image of gold you have set up. 13 Furious with rage, Nebuchadnezzar summoned Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. So these men were brought before the king, 14 and

Nebuchadnezzar said to them, Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the image of gold I have set up? 15 Now when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes and all kinds of music, if you are ready to fall down and worship the image I made, very good. But if you do not worship it, you will be thrown immediately into a blazing furnace. Then what god will be able to rescue you from my hand? King Nebuchadnezzar has made himself the ultimate god! Then we get back to our starting passage: Daniel 3:16-18 16 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up. We aren t going to the end of the story just yet. I want to answer a very serious question first: Question: How did they get to the point spiritually that they could make that statement? 1. They were committed before the fire started. Daniel 1:1-15 1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. 2 And the Lord delivered Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, along with some of the articles from the temple of God. These he carried off to the temple of his god in Babylonia and put in the treasure house of his god. 3 Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, chief of his court officials, to bring in some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility 4 young men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king s palace. He was to teach them the language and literature of the Babylonians. 5 The king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine from the king s table. They were to be

trained for three years, and after that they were to enter the king s service. 6 Among these were some from Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. 7 The chief official gave them new names: to Daniel, the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego. 8 But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way. 9 Now God had caused the official to show favor and sympathy to Daniel, 10 but the official told Daniel, I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you. 11 Daniel then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, 12 Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see. 14 So he agreed to this and tested them for ten days. 15 At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food. For them, it started with the food. They were not willing to eat anything sacrificed to other gods. - This showed their commitment to stand for God in the small things before they ever got to the big thing. EX: My commitment in the 8 th grade! 2. They knew the story of God. Daniel 1:17 17 To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. They could lean on the things they had been taught and what they had learned directly from the Father. - One struggle we have today is that we don t have an understanding of the things of God before we end up in the fire. - If we have no foundation to stand on, we fall we collapse under pressure. 3. They had seen God come through in the past.

Daniel 2:14-19 14 When Arioch, the commander of the king s guard, had gone out to put to death the wise men of Babylon, Daniel spoke to him with wisdom and tact. 15 He asked the king s officer, Why did the king issue such a harsh decree? Arioch then explained the matter to Daniel. 16 At this, Daniel went in to the king and asked for time, so that he might interpret the dream for him. 17 Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. 18 He urged them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that he and his friends might not be executed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19 During the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Then Daniel praised the God of heaven Listen: One of the biggest things for us to do when we re in the middle of the fire and we don t see how God is going to get us through is to look back at God s history in our lives. - How has He come through in the past? - Has He ever just left me all on my own? How He handled the past should give us a good picture of how He will handle today. 4. They were committed not to bow to the things of the world. Daniel 3:4-5 4 Then the herald loudly proclaimed, This is what you are commanded to do, O peoples, nations and men of every language: 5 As soon as you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes and all kinds of music, you must fall down and worship the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up. EX: ESPN Update music: Boy, the world is trying to hard to have all of us as Christians just bow down to the things of the world every time the music plays. - Some of us are living right here!! Let s look at the results of their stand:

1. When they took their stand, the fire got hotter! Daniel 3:19 19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and his attitude toward them changed. He ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual 2. God met them when the fire was the hottest. Daniel 3:22-25 22 The king s command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, 23 and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace. 24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, Weren t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire? They replied, Certainly, O king. 25 He said, Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods. 3. The bindings fell off in the fire. four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed Listen: We all live in chains and in bondage from some junk in our lives. The Truth: Sometimes those chains will only break after we re inside the fire. 4. Their miracle took place INSIDE the fire! What we know for us today: 1. Trust what you already know to be true. Focus on the character of God over your current condition. What have you learned about God in the past that will help you to remember today? How did He get you through the last fire you were in?

2. Trust your Father in the middle of the fire. Trusting in the sovereignty of God is one of the hardest and most reassuring things we can ever do. 3. Know that your God will not leave you there!!! Hang on to this promise with your whole heart. Reminder: We get to do something Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednigo could not do: We get to look back at the cross of Jesus!! - It is finished - The battle is already won! - He s really got this!!!
