PROGRAMME OF EVENTS 2015-2016 WESTCOTT FOUNDATION
THE WESTCOTT FOUNDATION I am delighted to introduce the Foundation s 2015-2016 programme of events and activities. The Foundation is now well established in its task, which is to support clergy and lay people in ministry and mission. The increasing focus throughout the Church of England on the importance of continuing education and development has been re-emphasised by the Archbishops in their commitment to the Church s five development strands, throughout which the need for new insights into ministry and mission are highlighted. The Foundation has already responded to these new priorities with its Leadership in Ministry series of course days that we shall be offering again in 2015-2016. All of our study days, courses and events have been well received by delegates and this year we have confirmed our continuing commitment to those ministering in urban settings with a course on urban ministry. At a time of change and renewal in the life of the Church, I commend our Westcott Foundation 2015-2016 Programme to you and we look forward to welcoming you at one or more of our events during the year. Previously partner, Herbert Smith & Co, lawyers, in the UK & Asia and director of the programme for Deans and Senior Clergy. Stephen Cherry Dean of Chapel, King s College, Cambridge & Fellow & Director of Studies in Theology & Religion. Previously Director of Ministry, Diocese of Durham, Canon Residentiary, Durham Cathedral & Rector of All Saints with Holy Trinity, Loughborough. Michael Fass Senior Research Fellow at Westcott House. He was previously responsible to the Bishop of Edinburgh for Continuing Ministerial Development activities and now teaches on the University of Wales, Trinity Saint David s MMin and DMin programmes at Lampeter and on the University of Gloucestershire s DBA programme at Cheltenham. Will Lamb Vice-Principal, Westcott House. Dave Male Fellow, Westcott Foundation & National Advisor for Pioneer Development for the Church of England. Previously on the staff of Westcott House & Ridley Hall & director, Centre for Pioneer Learning. Elizabeth Phillips Tutor in Theology & Ethics, Westcott House & the Cambridge Theological Federation. Author of Political Theology A Guide for the Perplexed. Philip Sheldrake Senior Research Fellow, Westcott Foundation & Director of the Institute for the Study of Contemporary Spirituality, Oblate School of Theology, San Antonio, Texas. He also works in religious publishing and editing and was formerly Chair of SCM Press. Tim Stevens was the Bishop of Leicester until his retirement in 2015. He has experience as a parish priest, archdeacon and bishop. Sheila Watson Archdeacon of Canterbury with responsibilities in the Diocese, the Cathedral & to the Archbishop. Experience of clergy development & in nourishing ordained & lay vocations. Sheila has served in the dioceses of Salisbury, Oxford, London & Newcastle. Rowan Williams Master, Magdalene College, Cambridge. Christopher Woods Fellow, Westcott Foundation. Formerly Secretary of the Church of England s Liturgical Commission and National Worship Adviser. Christopher is Parish Priest of St Anne s Hoxton, where he is responsible for adult learning and professional development in the Stepney area of the Diocese of London. The whole day was well presented, and clearly well prepared.
LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME The Westcott Leadership Programme has been designed to equip serving clergy for the demands and challenges of parish ministry. It draws on a wealth of expertise and experience. Leadership in Ministry I: Looking In Wednesday 21 October 2015 10am 4pm Fellow, Westcott Foundation) We know that who we are our personality and style plays a key part in the way we exercise leadership in ministry. How do we build on our strengths and manage our weaknesses, so that we can be the priests God is calling us to be? In this first of three one-day sessions, participants will be given resources and insights not just from psychology, but from theology and the Christian tradition, to enable them to develop their own priestly leadership in their congregations and communities. Cost: 45 per person (to include lunch, Leadership in Ministry II: Looking Around Wednesday 3 February 2016 10am 4pm Fellow, Westcott Foundation) In this second of three one-day sessions on leadership, we will look at the skills of selfmanaging and prioritising, the use of time and taking care of ourselves in the competing demands of ministry. We will look at models and practices, including from a theological perspective, and the implications and possibilities for our own ministries. Cost: 45 per person (to include lunch, Leadership in Ministry III: Looking Outward Wednesday 18 May 2016 10am 4pm Fellow, Westcott Foundation) & Dave Male (National Advisor for Pioneer Development for the Church of England) In this third of three one-day sessions on leadership, we will ask how we enable our congregations to engage in mission and evangelism, showing and sharing the love of Christ in the communities which we serve. How do we exercise outward-facing leadership when we are dealing with increasingly complex internal pressures and demands? We will look at how we can lead people in the practice of incarnational ministry for our communities. Cost: 45 per person (to include lunch,
STUDY DAYS Really quite excellent content; thoroughly timely, relevant material and great for keeping me spiritually alive too. Preaching Luke Wednesday 11 November 2015 10am 4pm Presented by: Loveday Alexander (Canon Theologian, Chester Cathedral) The next lectionary year in the three-year cycle turns to the Gospel of Luke on Advent Sunday. Loveday Alexander will identify the central themes of this Gospel in order to help us to explore Luke as a resource for preaching and discipleship in the coming year. Occasional Worshipers Wednesday 18 November 2015 10am 4pm Presented by: Ally Barrett (Tutor, Westcott House and Fellow, Westcott Foundation) From carol services to baptisms, weddings and funerals, some of the largest church gatherings often involve a high proportion of people who are not regular churchgoers. How might the church better engage with occasional worshipers and with the opportunities their presence brings? Renewing Worship in the Parish Wednesday 25 November 2015 10am 4pm Presented by: Christopher Woods (Vicar, St Anne's Hoxton & CMD Officer for the Stepney Area, Diocese of London) There is continuing pressure on clergy to ensure that Parish worship is both lively and spiritually nourishing. We will identify ways to both renew and enliven Eucharistic worship and reflect theologically on a variety of traditional & modern practices. Responsibility without Authority Saturday 5 March 2016 10am 4pm Fellow, Westcott Foundation) SSMs, NSMs, voluntary & retired clergy often find themselves in positions of significant responsibility but without the authority of Office at a time when the number of full-time clergy is falling. These ministries can also involve the formation of Parish Teams & Groups with their attendant pressures on relationships. In addition, clergy may take on other pastoral work that involves, for example, ministries at work and in chaplaincies. We will explore the variety of roles that emerge and reflect on their theological implications. Passion & Compassion In preparation for Holy Week Wednesday 9 March 2016 11am 4pm Held at St James, Piccadilly, London & The National Gallery Presenters: Susanna Avery Quash (Senior Research Curator, the National Gallery) & Will Lamb (Vice-Principal, Westcott House) Artists down the ages have depicted episodes from the Passion, death and resurrection of Christ. This study day will reflect on a group of representative works of art and consider how they have been informed by different understandings of the Christian doctrine of atonement. The day will include reflection on how art can be used as inspiration for worship and preaching. A seminar at St James church, Piccadilly, will be followed by a tour of the National Gallery. Ministry in Teams Wednesday 13 April 2016 10am 4pm Fellow, Westcott Foundation) and Tim Bellis (Cambridge Judge Business School, University of Cambridge) When clergy take responsibility for multiple parishes, particularly in rural areas, ministry is increasingly seen as a team effort. In addition, clergy team leaders are expected to lead in complex settings that can involve other full and part-time clergy, lay ministers and volunteers. We will consider the skills needed for the successful leadership of teams and the theological issues that can arise at times of change and conflict. Re-Imagining Forgiveness & Reconciliation Wednesday 4 May 2016 10am 4pm Presenters: Stephen Cherry (Dean, King s College, Cambridge) & Elizabeth Phillips (Tutor in Theology & Ethics, Westcott House) Forgiveness and reconciliation are not only two major themes of Christian faith and the life of the church but also of the world and for humanity. With regards to the work of ministry and mission, clergy are called to be the healers of wounds and exemplars of what God wishes for His world. Issues of conflict and forgiveness will be considered theologically as well as practical ideas about reconciliation. Eucharist and Mission: tension or convergence? Wednesday 25 May 2016 11am 4pm Presented by: Rowan Williams (Master, Magdalene College, Cambridge) Rowan Williams will offer his reflections on the relationship between the Eucharist and Mission.
From Curacy to Incumbency Wednesday 8 June 2016 Presenters: Tim Stevens (formerly Bishop of Leicester) & Will Lamb (Vice-Principal, Westcott House) How do you make the move from curacy to incumbency? There is more pressure on curates than has been in the past at this point of transition, so how do you prepare for and discern God s call? This study day is designed to give space to think through this process, and will include the opportunity to hear from those who have been involved in making appointments as they talk about what they are really looking for. We will help with the preparation of CVs and interview skills, and how to engage with this as a spiritual journey. We will also identify the types of options that a curate may seek as a next post. URBAN MINISTRY RETREATS Nurturing Urban Virtues Wednesday 24 February 2016 11am 4pm Presented by: Philip Sheldrake (Senior Research Fellow, Westcott Foundation) We will consider how local Christian communities can help to underpin civil society in our cities including ideas about urban virtue and the common good related to Christian social thought. The virtues to be promoted include neighbourliness, hospitality to the stranger, cooperation, solidarity and social engagement. Building Community Wednesday 27 April 2016 11am 4pm Presented by: Philip Sheldrake (Senior Research Fellow, Westcott Foundation) Various models for church communities include Citadel (set apart), Civic (collaborative with secular society), Evangelistic (active in Christian mission, promoting the Kingdom), and Servant (prophetic, serving the wider community). This study day considers such models from a theological perspective, exploring how demographic and other changes may challenge Christian communities. Deacons Retreat for recent alumni of Westcott Monday 4 April Wednesday 6 April 2016 Presented by: Chris Chivers (Principal, Westcott House) & Will Lamb (Vice- Principal, Westcott House) During our time together we will reflect on issues raised during your diaconate so far and on your impending priesting. The programme will include both consideration in the light of your experience of the diaconate of the meaning of priesthood and of sessions on presiding at the Eucharist and the spirituality of priesthood. The Retreat begins at 4pm on Monday 4 April and ends after lunch on Wednesday 6 April. Cost: 125 Residential, 80 Non-Residential Annual Clergy Retreat Sacred Idleness: Prayer & Play Monday 11 July Thursday 14 July 2014 Presenter: Sheila Watson (Archdeacon of Canterbury) The opportunity for vocational refreshment including insights from the visual and literary arts. The retreat will include morning and evening liturgies & space for personal study, silence and meditation. The retreat begins at 2pm on Monday and ends after lunch on Thursday. Cost: 210 Full board
