FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Fruit of the Spirit-Patience July 13, 2014 11:00 AS WE GATHER God s Word is like the rain, watering the soil, and allowing it to produce plants from the hidden seeds. There is no stopping the growth, either in the plants or in God s Word fulfilling His purposes. God s Word, Jesus explains in the Gospel, is also like seed, very good seed. Although it may encounter opposition in the hearts and lives of many people, in those who are receptive, His Word produces an amazing harvest. As we are saints and sinners at the same time, we need God s help to respond to His Word. Our Baptism assures us of the promise that our heavenly Father will listen whenever we call out, Abba, Father! RINGING OF THE BELLS - We Prepare our hearts and minds for worship PRE-SERVICE Instrumental Music WELCOME OPENING SONGS Awesome Is The Lord Most High Pierce/Tomlin/Reeves/Abel Great are You Lord mighty in strength, You are faithful, and You will ever be. (Please Stand) CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Matthew 28:19b (18:20) If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8 9 Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. John 20:19 23 Amen. OLD TESTAMENT Isaiah 55:10 13 (God s Word shall always be effective.) [10]"For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, [11] so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it. [12] "For you shall go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall break forth into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. [13] Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress; instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle; and it shall make a name for the Lord, an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off." This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 65:9 13 All: You visit the earth and water it; You greatly enrich it; the river of God is full of water; You provide their grain, for so You have prepared it. You water its furrows abundantly, settling its ridges, softening it with showers, and blessing its growth. You crown the year with Your bounty; Your wagon tracks overflow with abundance. The pastures of the wilderness overflow, the hills gird themselves with joy, the meadows clothe themselves with flocks, the valleys deck themselves with grain, they shout and sing together for joy. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. EPISTLE Romans 8:12 17 (By virtue of our Baptism we can call out to God, Abba, Father! ) [12] So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. [13] For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. [14] For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. [15] For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, "Abba! Father!" [16] The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, [17] and if children, then heirs heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. (Please Stand) 4

HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 13:1 9, 18 23 (God sends His Word by grace, no matter the reception it receives.) The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the Thirteenth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. [1] That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. [2] And great crowds gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat down. And the whole crowd stood on the beach. [3] And he told them many things in parables, saying: "A sower went out to sow. [4] And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. [5] Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, [6] but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. [7] Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. [8] Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. [9] He who has ears, let him hear.".... [18] "Hear then the parable of the sower: [19] When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. [20] As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, [21] yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away. [22] As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. [23] As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty." This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. APOSTLES CREED LSB 159 I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. SERMON (Please Stand) PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people in their various needs. For us here and for the Church around the world, that we may be receptive soil, receiving the Word with joy and returning to God the harvest He so dearly desires, let us pray to the Lord. Abba, Father, hear our prayer. For all who till the soil, manage businesses large and small, protect the nation from harm, keep the peace in our communities, respond to emergencies of health, fire, and flood, and meet the physical and emotional needs of those who rely on them, that God would strengthen and protect them, and move us all to appreciate their efforts on our behalf, let us pray to the Lord. Abba, Father, hear our prayer. For those near and dear to us who call out to our heavenly Father in their various needs [including...], that our gracious God would visit, relieve, heal, and restore them as fits His loving plans for them, let us pray to the Lord.
