SERMON NOTES Sunday, May 11, 2014 LISTEN to the message from God s Word. USE this sheet to make some personal notes. GO back over them through the coming week. LET God crystallize these truths in YOUR life. Sermon title: Biblical text: Main idea of sermon: 1. 2. 3. 4. Illustration I want to remember: What should I do as a result of hearing this sermon? For: Sunday, May 18, 2014 Jesus Teaching on the Law Lesson: Matthew 15:1-11, 18-20 GOLDEN TEXT: This people draweth nigh unto Me with their mouth, and honoureth Me with their lips; but their heart is far from Me. But in vain they do worship Me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men (Matthew 15:18-9). TODAY S AIM: To show that Jesus upheld the inspired Scriptures as the ultimate and final authority on how a person should think and behave. INTRODUCING THE LESSON: As we have seen in our previous lessons, Jesus was constantly referring to the Scriptures. His appearance in Israel and His present and future ministry are in fulfillment of biblical prophecy. In this week s lesson we will examine Jesus teachings on the law of God as given in the Scriptures and how He dealt with the teachings and traditions of the rabbis and elders when they came into conflict with that law. PRACTICAL POINTS: 1. Finding fault with others prevents us from concentrating on loving and serving God (Matthew 15:1-3). 2. When we avoid following God s Word, we miss its blessings (Matthew 15:4-6). 3. If we lack a close relationship with God, we often feel lost and helpless just when we need Him most (Matthew 15:7-8). 4. Substituting our own ideas for God s Word implies we want to be independent of Him (Matthew 15:9). 5. Unkind words are often the result of harboring envious and jealous thoughts (Matthew 15:10-11). 6. Even when we fail, God is always ready to forgive us (Matthew 15:18-20). CONCLUDING THE LESSON: No one is saved by keeping the law. We are saved by God s grace through faith in Christ and His sacrifice on the cross. However, we rely on the Bible for guidance and instructions on how to conduct our lives as Christians. It is becoming very unpopular to view the Bible as our authority. Society, with all of its secular experts and opinions, complains that the Bible is an obsolete standard that should be discarded by thinking people. It is important for the Christian to discern properly, keeping the Scriptures as the central and only written authority for how he thinks and conducts himself.
