PASTORAL MESSAGE For I was hungry, and you gave me food (Matthew 25:35) It goes without saying that one of the missions of the Church within the world is charitable philanthropic work. Christ delivers this command not just in the parable of the Sheep and the Goats from Matthew 25, but in countless other parables and pastoral interactions. Our parish Philoptochos Society, and Outreach Committee have taken upon their shoulders Christ s call to philanthropy. Yet I would be willing to bet that many of our parishioners are not aware of the many charitable works that we as a parish do. The purpose of my article this month is not to sound a trumpet that [we] may have the glory of men (Matthew 6:2) for the work that has been done, but to call attention to it in the hopes of inspiring you to join in the many charitable works of our parish. Each year our Philoptochos Society feeds the hungry via the Annunciation Cathedral soup kitchen, and creates hundreds of hand crafted blankets for children in nearby hospitals. The funds from their larger events have gone to support ministry to refugees arriving in Greece, scholarships to a camp for children with special needs, ministries that fight human trafficking, individual philanthropy cases (both from within and outside our parish), and many other charitable causes. In just the past year alone, the Outreach Committee has hosted our semiannual blood drive, provided a meal for seniors at the Glenview Senior Center, and prepared and served meals at 10 local area soup kitchens. If that were not enough, the Outreach Committee has also committed the parish to serve at another 5 soup kitchens throughout the remainder of this year. They have made it their goal to keep our college parishioners connected and have organized semiannual care packages for the students with the help of other ministries. I would also be remised if I did not mention the many other ministries who have incorporated a charitable aspect into the broader offering of their ministry. The OCC has spent a night packing meals for people in third world countries through Feed My Starving Children. The Choir visited a retirement and nursing home to provide entertainment by singing patriotic songs on Veterans Day. Our Altar Boys just this passed month prepared and served dinner to students who come to the Glenview Youth Services for tutoring. Like many of the other ministries, our Young Adults prepared meals and delivered them to the homeless on a cold winter night in downtown Chicago. The list here is not exhaustive of all the philanthropic work done in Christ s name through the faithful and generosity of our parishioners. Again, I am not listing these activities to drum up praise. This is work that God has set before us and commanded us to do. I just want everyone to know the numerous opportunities to fulfill this command. Looking forward, the Outreach Committee has 5 opportunities for us to feed our fellow brothers and sisters at local soup kitchens. The dates for those events are: 6/16, 6/29, 7/22, 10/14, 8/31, and 11/30. If you would like to participate in any of these soup kitchens and give of yourself to aid others, please contact the Outreach Committee at SSPP.OUTREACH@gmail.com. If you have an idea for other ways in which we can continue to fulfill Christ s philanthropic and charitable command, please let me know. In this way we can all work to alleviate the suffering of others and in love fulfill our Lord s command. + Fr. Panagiotis

Q&A with Fr. Panagiotis Is our new Nathanael a Metropolitan or an Archbishop? Or both? What is the difference between the two titles? P.Z. Many have asked this question, not just about Metropolitan Nathanael, but even when Metropolitan Iakovos of blessed memory was still alive. The question probably arises because of the disparity between the title Metropolitan and how we commemorate our Metropolitan during the divine services of the Church. In ecclesiastical terms, Chicago is a Metropolitan Diocese, therefore our bishop is referred to as Metropolitan of Chicago. Yet when we pray for Metropolitan Nathanael in the services we say, Let us pray for our Archbishop Nathanael. In terms of personal title, Metropolitan and Archbishop refer to the size and position of the diocese over which a particular bishop presides. Our diocese in Chicago is a Metropolitan Diocese therefore our bishop s title is Metropolitan. In New York, Archbishop Demetrios presides over an Archdiocesan Diocese therefore his title is Archbishop. New York and the surrounding area is larger, so it is an Archdiocesan Diocese. Chicago is smaller, so it is a Metropolitan Diocese. Aside from size, there is no canonical difference between a Metropolitan Diocese and an Archdiocesan Diocese. If size is the only differentiating factor in determining title, then the function and role of a Metropolitan Bishop and an Archbishop within their given diocese are exactly the same. We should also clarify that the terms Metropolitan Diocese and Archdiocese imply that there are other smaller dioceses in the surrounding area, each headed by diocesan bishops. It is the role of the Metropolitan or Archbishop to preside over synods of all the diocesan bishops in a given area. This is not reflected right now in reality, but lets imagine things as the canons intend. The Midwest would have diocesan bishops in, lets say: Milwaukee, St. Louis, and Minneapolis. Chicago would be the Metropolitan (metropolis means Mother City ) Diocese. When the bishops of the Midwest would gather together in synod, the bishop of the largest city ie the Mother City presides over the synod and therefore acts as the chiefbishop (Archbishop) of all the bishops in the Midwest. Prayers and petitions for Metropolitan Nathanael in the divine services reflect this canonical understanding. He is the chief-bishop of the Midwest, being the bishop of the Metropolitan Diocese, therefore we refer to him in the services as our Archbishop Nathanael. We can miss this distinction because we lack smaller diocese spread throughout the Midwest. So the answer is that Metropolitan Nathanael is both a Metropolitan and an Archbishop. He is a Metropolitan because he is the bishop of a Metropolitan Diocese, and he is an Archbishop because he is the chief-bishop of the Midwest (theoretically though not in reality, presiding over a synod of smaller diocesan bishops).

THANK YOU to everyone for your support of the Philoptochos Trivia Night on April 21 at Valley Lo. The evening was a success on every level and raised over $21,000 to help fund our many worthy causes. One last question: Who were the real winners at the evening that is best described as being a lot of fun? The correct answer: The 213 people in attendance, the countless charities supported by SS P&P Philoptochos, Salvation Army s STOP-IT campaign to end human trafficking, and the Greek Squad who came from behind to take first place in the competition!
