HYMNS OF THE DAY THE RESURRECTION APOLYTIKION, MODE 1 The stone of Thy tomb was sealed by the Judeans and the soldiers guarded Thy sacred and pure body, the savior arose on the third day, granting life to the world and because of this, heavenly hosts did acclaim Thee and called out giver of life. Glory to Thy Resurrection O Christ, Glory to Thy Kingdom, Glory to Thy Providence who alone loves mankind. ISODIKON Come let us worship falling down before Christ. Save us O Son of God who didst arise from the dead sing we to Thee Alleluia. APOLYTIKION FOR THE NEW ECCLESIASTICAL YEAR O Fashioner of all creation, who made seasons and years by Your own authority, bless the crown of this year with Your goodness, O Lord, and preserve our leaders and Your city in peace, at the intercession of the Theotokos, and save us. APOLYTIKION OF THE THEOTOKOS OF MIASENA Rejoice, Maiden full of grace, O Virgin Theotokos, a haven and protection are you for all of mankind. From you did the Redeemer of the world become incarnate; only you are both a Mother and a Virgin. O Day, ever blessed and ever filled with glory, intercede with Christ the God, beseeching Him to grant peace to the universe. 6

APOLYTIKION OF SAINT SYMEON THE STYLITE You became a pillar of patience, O devout one, emulating the forefathers, Job in his sufferings and Joseph in his temptations, and the manner of the bodiless, though you were still in body. O devout father Symeon, intercede with Christ the God, to save our Souls. TROPARION OF SAINT SOPHIA (HOLY WISDOM) Blessed are You O Christ our God, Who as all wise the fishermen You showed forth; By sending Your Holy Spirit down upon them and through them the universe You drew unto Your net. O lover of mankind Glory to You. KONDAKION FOR THE NEW ECCLESIASTICAL YEAR You, the Creator and the Lord of the ages, O God of all, truly transcending all essence, we earnestly entreat, that You will bless the year, and O tender loving Lord, in Your infinite mercy, only Master, save us all who worship and serve You, O our Redeemer, and who cry with fear For all Your servants, make fruitful the coming year. COMMUNION HYMN FOR THE NEW ECCLESIASTICAL YEAR Bless the crown of this year with your goodness O Lord. (3 times) Alleluia. (3 times) 7

EPISTLE READING EPISTLE READER...STEPHANIE YALLOURAKIS Priest: Let Us Attend Reader: Great is our Lord, and great is His power Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good. Priest: Wisdom... Reader: The Reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to Timothy (2:1-7) TIMOTHY, my son, first of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life, godly and respectful in every way. This is good, and it is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, the testimony to which was borne at the proper time. For this I was appointed a preacher and apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. 8

GOSPEL READING The Reading is from The Gospel of St. Luke (4:16-22) At that time, Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up; and he went to the synagogue, as his custom was, on the Sabbath day. And he stood up to read; and there was given to him the book of the prophet Isaiah. He opened the book and found the place where it was written, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord." And he closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant, and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." And all spoke well of him, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. 9

Please look for the Thanksgiving flyer reservation form in the September and October Herald and send in your reservations as soon as possible. Once we have reached capacity we will not be able to accept any more reservations. You must send your payment in with the reservation form. The mailing address is on the bottom of the form. Don t miss out! We had a number of people last year who showed up without a reservation and we were sold out. Please send in your reservation early! STUFFED ANIMALS PROJECT: We have a new collection for the month of September. In memory of 6-year old Ileana, the niece of our board member Allison Stavaridis, we will be collecting new stuffed animals. Ileana died of brain cancer back in April. Allison will be taking all of the new stuffed animals to children undergoing cancer treatments at the UCLA Mattel Pediatric Hospital. If you would like to donate a new stuffed animal, please bring it to church on a Sunday in the month of September OR bring it to our meeting on September 22. The animals will be given to children in October on Ileana s birthday. Philoptohos must continue to reach out and do the work of our Lord. The poor, the destitute, the hungry, the aged, the sick, the unemployed, the orphaned, those who may need assistance. That is what Philoptohos is here for. For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me. John 12:8. With love in Christ s service, Virginia Noyes and The Philoptohos Board of Directors 10
