Joint Heirs Adult Bible Fellowship Philippians, Week 8, Php. 2:5-11 December 13, 2015 Tim Powell, Teacher Who Is Jesus that We Should Worship Him? Philippians 2:5-11 Introduction: We need to have the same mind as Christ Jesus. We need to show love and mercy to others. We need to esteem others needs above our own. Review: I. Goal: Have the same mind as Christ Jesus. (Php. 2:1-5) A. Same Love: Have affection and mercy for others. B. Do nothing out of self-centeredness. C. Esteem other needs above own needs; remember: it s not all about you! Today s Lesson: II. Who Is Jesus that We Should Worship Him? (Php. 2:6-8) A. Jesus was God, Jesus is God; God was born in flesh. (Php. 2:6-7) If Christ came and was just another great religious leader who taught us about God, then we would still be lost in our sins and our faith would just be another religion. God incarnate o God who made this world became man. o Without this truth there would be no Christianity to believe in. o As one tries to grasp this truth it is hard to wrap one's mind around it. o This is not only hard to fathom it is hard to explain. o Jn. 1:1-14: He made all things. In him was life, and the life was the light. 1
He came to His own, but they did not receive Him. Those who did receive him became children of God. o Jn. 8:58: Jesus said to them, Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM. Jesus explained that He is YAHWEH, the I AM. o Jn. 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was. The pre-existence of Christ; Jesus had the same glory as the Father in eternity past. o Jn. 17:25 O righteous Father! The world has not known You, but I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me. o Mt. 1:22-23 22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, God with us. Immanuel means God with us. B. Jesus proved He was God by miracles and the resurrection. Lk. 24:36-51 o Christ appeared to the disciples after the resurrection. o Even those who did not like Him were in awe of what He was able to do. o No other religion has this proof. C. The disciples post-resurrection behavior proves He was resurrected from the dead. Lk. 24:50-53 o After the resurrection, the disciples were completely changed from frightened men, afraid for their lives, to bold witnesses in public. o A man may die for something he believes in but will not die for something he knows is not true. o After Jesus ascension the disciples worshipped Him. 2

III. Only the Perfect God/Man Could Pay the Ransom for Our Sin. (Php. 2:8) The doctrine of the incarnation is essential to our salvation. Jn. 3:1-19 o Jesus had to be crucified, bearing our sin, in order to redeem us. o Great witnessing passage. o If you are only born of flesh, you will die. o Even though Nicodemus was a thinking man, he still did not know what Scripture proclaimed about Jesus being lifted up. Jn. 10:18 Jesus said, No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father. o Jesus voluntarily allowed Himself to be crucified; and He was resurrected. This is the gift of Christmas: Eph. 2:8-9 o Salvation is not something that can be earned by us; it is a gift that can only be accepted by faith. o Jesus sacrifice for us was the gift of Christmas. 5
IV. Jesus Has Been Given the Name that Is Above Every Name. (Php. 2:9-11) A. Jesus returned to Heaven. Lk. 24:51 Jesus ascended to heaven. Ac. 1:9-11 He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. B. God the Father Exalted Jesus. Heb. 1:2-3, 6, 8 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; 3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 6 But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says: Let all the angels of God worship Him. 8 But to the Son He says: Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. Ac. 7:55-56 I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God! Heb. 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone. 6
Heb. 10:12 But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God. Rev. 5:11-12 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice: Worthy is the Lamb who was slain To receive power and riches and wisdom, And strength and honor and glory and blessing! Rev. 11:15 Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever! C. His name will be above every name. Rev. 19:16 And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. o There is no higher name than this. D. Jesus will judge every man. Jn. 5:22-29 The Son given authority to judge. Heb. 12:23 to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect. E. Every knee shall bow to Jesus. Php. 2:10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth. Heb. 1:6 Let all the angels of God worship Him. Rev.4:8-11 o Four living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever. o The twenty-four elders fall down before Him and worship Him. Rev. 5:8-14 o Four living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever. The twenty-four elders fall down before Him and worship Him. The four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. o Every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, honor Him. 7
Rev. 20:11-13 o The Great White Throne Judgment o This ends with every knee bowing before Christ. Isa. 45:23 I have sworn by Myself; The word has gone out of My mouth in righteousness, And shall not return, That to Me every knee shall bow, Every tongue shall take an oath. F. Purpose is to the glory of God the Father. Mt. 17:1, 4-5 He was transfigured before them. Jn. 5:23 Honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Mt. 3:17 This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Application: Your Christmas present to Jesus: humble yourself to be a servant to Him and to others. He wants you to be all that He has designed for you to be. As your gift to Him, give yourself to God for His use. Meditate on Who Jesus was and is, and what He did on Christmas for you and me Get on your knees and practice worshipping Him. We don t physically get on our knees enough! Accept Jesus Christ, God incarnate, as your savior because that will determine your eternity. 8
