St. James United Church June 3, 2018/Laity Sunday Bread Not Stones Taking Action to End Child Poverty The Service today is conducted by the St. James United Church Women Minister: Rev. Brian Colbourne Minister of Visitation: Rev. Pamela Jones-Fitzgerald Minister of Youth/Christian Education: Susan Sheppard, DLM Pianist: Gillian Burry Vaughan Choir: UCW Choir Director: Gillian Burry Vaughan St. James United Church is a safe place for all people to worship, regardless of race, creed, age, cultural background or sexual orientation. Musical Prelude Introit: God Weeps MV78 Choir Welcome and Introduction to the Service Jean White Sharing the Peace Life & Work of St. James Call to Worship: (responsive) One: What does the Lord require of us? All: To seek justice, to love kindness, and walk humbly with our God. One: Who are we called to be? All: We are called to be the Church: to celebrate God s presence, to live with respect in Creation, to love and serve others. One: Why do we gather for worship? All: We gather as an outpouring of gratitude and awe and a practice of opening ourselves to God s still, small voice of comfort, and to God s rushing whirlwind of challenge. Let us worship God together! Opening Prayer: (together) Creator God, You have made each of us in your image, and yet we fail to reflect Your love and justice. You have created every child in Your image, and yet we don t treat every child as a precious reflection of You. We see some children as valued treasures, and others as lost causes. We invest our time, money, and hopes in some children, while we squander the great potential of others. Open our eyes, we pray, to see that every child is made in Your image and belongs to You. Help us to love, protect and nurture all children. We pray these things in the name of the One who came to us as a child. Amen. Hymn: Jesus Loves Me 365 Children s Time Gloria Le Feuvre

Hymn: Lord, Listen to Your Children Praying 400 Offertory Invitation Offering Offertory Chorus: Spirit, open my heart to the joy and pain of living. As You love may I love, in receiving and in giving, Spirit, open my heart. Offertory Dedication: (together) Gracious God, use this offering and all that we have for the building up of Your work in this church and the wide world, for Your glory. Amen. Scripture Old Testament: Deuteronomy 15: 7-11 Maxine Rose New Testament: Matthew 25: 35-40 Anthem: Bread Not Stones by Kevin White Choir Reflection Barbara Adams Hymn: When I Needed a Neighbour 600 Prayers of the People and the Lord s Prayer Gail Colbourne Closing Hymn: Go, Make a Diff rence MV209 Commissioning and Benediction: (responsive) Barbara Adams One: Friends, what does God require of us? All: To seek justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with our God. One: And if Christ s disciples keep silent? All: The stones will shout out! One: May God bless our witness, life and work. All: And may the Spirit guide us in the Way. Amen. Musical Postlude: Bread Not Stones YouTube Service prepared by Barbara Adams. Minute for Mission: Our gifts for M&S support the long standing ministry of St. Columbia House, a community ministry supporting those who are living on the margins of Montreal. This ministry celebrated its 100 th Anniversary in 2017. From its beginnings as a place that only provided hot meals, to its current status as a leader in changing public policy in Montreal, St. Columbia House has changed many lives. It is now an organization n the cutting edge of emerging needs and innovative responses through its environmental programming including community gardening where participants develop their own balcony gardens, and beekeeping programs that allow participants to learn how to interact with bees at the ministry s rooftop beehive. In partnership with United Church Ministries, Montreal City Mission & Montreal Presbytery Justice & Global Ecumenical Relations Committee, St Columbia House has also created the Green Church Project to engage ministries in its ecological practices. Together through our M&S support, we can celebrate with St. Columbia House all the lives that have been transformed & look ahead to innovations for the future.
